GANTT ONTHE THIRD PARTY,
The Editor Thinks It Can Carry Georgia by
50,000 I\lajority.
Larry Gantt, ex-editor, of the Southern
Alliance Farmer, and an announced can
didate for Congress, was in Atlanta the
other day. lln discussing the St. Louis
convention, he said he believed Georgia
would give 50,000 majority for the third
party candidate unless there is a nmiracu
lous change of sentiment. He said he
was, himself, of course, opposed to the
third party, being a candidate on the
democratic platform, but intimated that
he would withdraw from the race if a
third party candidate is put outin his
district. Editor Gantt has lived in al
most every county in the district, and
says himself that he is related to nearly
half of the people in about half of them,
but, while he can defeat any demoerat in
the race, he would stand no show with a
third party opponent. Mr. Gantt was
long one of Colonel Livingston’s confi
dants, and, as an allianceman, opposed
the third party. His views of the situa
tion since the declarstion of the St. Louis
convention and stand Colonel Living
ston took there is significant. Editor
Gantt also expresses the belief that
President Livingston is practically dead
as an alliance leader, because he refused
to join the third party, and regards his
resignation as a matter of a short time.

One Out of Seventeen.
The following story is told on General
Harrison, the President, in connection
with a public dinner given him on one
occasion :
At the close of the dinner one of the
gentlemen drank to his health.
The Gener. pledged his toast by
drinking water.
Another gentleman handed a toast and
§:id:
“General, will you not favor me by
taking a glass of wine?”
The General, in a very gentlemanly
way, begged to be excused,
He was again urged to join in a glass
of wine. This was too much. Ha arose
from his seat and said, in a most digni
fied manner:
“Gentlemen, I have twice refused to
partake of the wine-cup. I hope that
will be sufficient. Though you press the
matter ever so much, nota drop shall
pass my lips! I made a resolve when I
started in lifs that I would avoid strong
drink., That vow I have never broken,
“I am one of the class of seventeen
young men who graduated together. The
other sixteen members of my class now
fill drunkards graves, and all from the
pernicious habit of wine drinking. 1
owe all my health, my happiness and
prosperity to my early resolution.
Would you urge me to break it now?®”
