IMPORTANT ACTION BY THE CITY
.BOARD OF EDUCATION.
“The Matriculation Fee Abolished for the
Spring Term--Commissioners Elected.
jAnother Tescher Employed.
The meeting of the b ard of public
scho )] commissioners Thursday morning
was an Important one to the patrons of
the city public scbools.
Since the p:blic school system was or
ganized four years ago a yearly matricu-
Aation fee of $5.00 has been charged—
s3.oo for the spring term and $2.00 for
zthe fall term.
| But when the spring session opens
next i'uesday morning theschool wiil be
freein every sense of the word to those
*who attend, as the matriculation fee for
;’zhat term has been suspended.
" Tne commissioners were moved to
this action because there are a number
of childrev in the city whose parents are
not able to pay the matriculation fee,
and, therefore, have been denied the ad
—antages of the school.
The amount of revenue derived from
the matriculation fee each spring term
.has been about $700.00. Of course this
will now be lost, but it is expected that
“the money derived from the stae by an
‘inereased number of pupils will offset
the deficit made in the school's revenue
by the abolishment of the matriculation
fee.
The terms of ccmmissioners W, W,
Farpum, J. G. Dean and E. L. Rainey
.expired with the meeting Thursday,
.and, according to the act establishivg
«the schools, two of the vacancies are
Ailled by the board »f commissioners and
i»one by the city council, Commissioners
| Dean anl Rainey- were -elected by the
Q board to succeed themselves for a term
f eight years. At the next meeting of
’ e city council Dr. Farnum’s successor
f.lill be elected, and that body will no
\. bubt con:inue the commissioner in the
§ ssition he has filled so well for the past
¢ (Jour years.
V¥ Another important thing done was the
’:'rdecision to employ another laay teacher
| f£or the remainder of the school year.

The Christmas tree, under the auspic

source of great gratification to those
who attended. About 150 presents were
