DICK WELDON WAS IN THE ALA
BAMA PENITENTIARY.
When the Crime of Which He Is Charged
Was Committed--Documents to Be
Brought Here.
1f the reports that come from Alabama
are true the negro who waa arrested by
W. L. Fox and brought to Dawson as
Jule Spikes, for the murder of Marshal
Lee Huff of Parroty, and atterward in
dicted under the name of Dick Welion
for the same crime, will soon be a free
man,
Just after the last session of the superi
or court Deputy Sheriff J. H. Parsons, of
Birmingham, was in Dawson, and while
here he recognized the negro as one who
was working in the Alabama coal mines
at the times of the murder of Mr. Huff.
It seems that when Mr. Parsons re
turned to Alabama he entered into an
investigation, and a special from Birm
ingham in Thursday’s Constitution an
nounced that he had succeeded in obtain
ing proof that the negro now under
arrest could not have been in Georgia on
the day of the crime. The books and
memoranda of the lennessee Coal, Iron
and Railroal Company, it is alleged,
show that the darkey was working at
Blue Ureek mines tben. The Constitu
tion’s special also says that Parsons will
be in Dawson with the books when cour
convenes again, which will be on the
third Monday in May, for the purpose of
saving the negro’s life.
