Mill Dams § Broke and !Bridges Washed
Aaway--Railroad Schedules Broken
Into--Lightning’s Work.
From Tuesday atternoon until Friday
morning of last week a tremendous rain
goorn prevailed in this section, the
heaviest, according to the ‘“‘oldest inhab
itant,” in thirty years.
Ia Terrell county the damage has been
very great, and where there were once
mill dams the water sweeps by uninter
ruptedly now, THE NEws has heard of
not less than six dams that went down
before the rush of water.
The bridges over many of the streams
in the county have been washed avay,
and 1t will cuost considerable money to |
replace them. ‘
The farmers are nearly in despair, for
their fields have been deluged with rain
and washed into gullies. This will ne
cessitate a great deal of new plowing be
fore seed can be planted.
In Dawson all tlfe lower 'places were
covered with water, and many of the
sidewalks were washed away to a con
siderab'e extent. On Tuesday evening
lightning struck the barn of Mr. Isom
Walker, a resident of Mercerville, doing
considerable damage to it and killing a
hog.
Railroad traffic was greatly impeded.
All the trains were out of schedule time
and ther: was no mail over the Central
in either direction for one day and none
over the Columbus Southern for two
days, On the Central ‘here were wash
outs of considerable size at Byron, near
Macon, and in Alabama. On the South
ern three washouls were reported—one
five miles this side of Columbus, one at
Co e Station six miles from Dawson,
and one at Renfroe’s.
It is hoped that the fair weather and
sunshine of this week will continue for
some time. ‘i

A Distinction With a Difference.
The young man had failed in securing
the girl as his own for life, owing prin
cipally to the violent opposition of her
paternal ancestor, and a friend of his
was consoling him on his loss.
“‘By George,”” he said, ‘‘l don’t see
what you wanted to marry that girl
for
““That’s because you don’t.know her. ”’
““I know her father.’’
“‘But I wasn’t marrying him. "’
‘‘Perhaps not, but you would have to
become a member of the family.”’
“I could have stood that for the girl’s
sake.”’
““Well, I couldn’t. Why, I had soms
dealings with him in a business way,
and I found that he was a regular rob
ber.”’
The disappointed lover sighed pro
foundly.
““I don’t know but that you may be
pretty near right on the old man,’’ he
said. *‘‘l bad some dealings with him
and found him a free booter.’’—Detroir

“Perhaps y~u would not think so, but
a very large pioportion of diseases in
New York coizes from carelessness about
catching cold,” says Dr. Syrus Edson.
“It is such a simple thing and so cornmon
that very few people, unless it 18 a case
of pneumonia, pay any attention to a
cold. New York is one of the healthiest
places on the Atiantic Coast, and yet
there are a great many cases of catarrh
and consumption which have their origio
in this neglect of the simplest precaution
f every day life. The most sensible
adyice is, when you have one get rid of
it as soon as poss ble. 13y all means do
not neglect it.”” Dr. Edson does not tell
you how to cure a cold, but we will,
Take Chamberlain’s Cough Kemedy. It
will relieve the lungs, aid] expectoration,
open the secretions and soon effect a '
permanent cure. 25 and 50 cent bottles
