Her Adniirers Continued to Call. The J
announcement, When It Was Made, .
Created Ureat Surprise. |
A very pretty romance, in which a
Shellman belle and a prominent young
dentist of Florida are the stars, has just
come to light: |
Last year Miss Jessie Payne, known as |
a beautiful and accomplished young
lady, visited relatives in Florida.
In Dale City Miss Payne met a former
Georgian, §Dr. James M. yWilkes. It
was the same old story of ‘‘love at first
sight,”” so the saying goes, aud the de
nouement then and there entered into
was sately and sacredly guardea until
last Wednesday morning.
Miss Payne returned home and con
tinued to reign as Sheliman's belle,
receiving her young gentlemen admir
ers with, that suavity and cordiality which
¢ laracterized jher debut into society.
she had any namberjot adorers at her |
command, among them one or two oL
Dawson’s popular young men.
During the December bohdays Dr.
Wilkes, of Tampa, Fla., took occasion
to visit Miss Payne atShellman—his las®
call being on the night of December
28th, 1894, when hie was secretly married
to Miss Payne, only the bride’s widowed
motherand sisters being present with
the minister to witness the ceremony.
That night Dr. Wilkes returned to his
home in Tampa to prepare tor the com
ing of his bride.
For over three months the wedding
was kept a profound secvet, and soo safe
ly was it guarded on the part of the
bride that Mrs. Wilkes continued to
receive the company of young men who
insisted upon being beaux despite the
fact that she had openly declared her
engagement to Dr. Wilkes. |
But the young men considered it a
huge joke from the jocular manner in
which the declaration was made, aud
the thing kept up until the doctor ap
peared to claim, publicly, as his wife
the woman he had married last Decem
ber. This he did at a reception given in
Shellman Wednesday nightat the home
of the bride’s mother, Mrs. S. J. Payne.
Mrs. Payne had issued *‘at home’’ cards
to about thirty young people, and as the
guests arrived they were given a surpris
by being handed cards on which was
printed: ‘*Marned. Miss Jessie Payne to
Dr. J. M. Wilkes, December 28th, 1894.”
Parties in Dawson received invitations
to the reception.

*Uncle Sam and Jonh Bull Tnterested.
From the Atianta Constitution.
| Three promineut Minnesota capitalists
) have *just returned from Venezuela,
l where they have secured a concession of
valuable timber land at tne mouth of
}the Orinoco river, running 125 miles
| south and from fifteen to fity miles east
land west.
The grant of this concession, accord
ing to advices from Washington, will
probably bring to a crlsis the question
which now distu.bs our state deparn-l
ment. The land granted to the Ameri
cans is said to be in the heart of the
| territory over which Venezuela andl
Great Brilain are engaced in a dispute,
and as it is on the Venezuelan side of the
Schomberg line, which limits the area
Great Britain is willing to arbitrate, it
will be seen that its ownership by Amer
icanjcitizens will bring our government
face to face with the British government,
IThe land in question is th 3 vital point of
. conflict between Venezuela and and
lEnglaud, and if the Americans hold it
vhe 131itish will not not be able to control
the mouth of the river. ‘
We may now look for a very interest
ing conflict. Our republic will not only
be called npon to stand by Venezuela in
resisting Englaud’'s seizare of territory |
in defense of the Monroe doctrine, but it |
will also be bound to take this course |
because it will be the oaly way to pro
tect the American citizens who have ac
quired this valuable property.
Secretary Gresham seems to be in
favor of a vigorous foreizn policy that
wiil make our flag and the rights of our
citizens respected.
