DEMOCRATIC MASS MEETING.
F The democrats of Terrell county are |
hereby called to meet at the court‘
house in Dawson on Saturday, Septem
ber 26th at 100°clock a. m., for the pur
pose of reorganizing the county dem
ocratic executive committee and trans
‘acting such othet matters as the good
of the party may demand. Senator
Bacon has been invited to be present
and speak. This Séptember 16th, 1806, ‘

FAIR ELECTIONS.
While there is doubtless foundation
for the charge of electiou frauds in
an'.Te (-mmliigs of Georgia, we do not be
lieve half of the hue and ery thatis now
being heard in this state abeut unfair
elections. 1f the ballot box is not Kept |
sacred and is tampered with in smno'
localities the rascality should be stop-|
ped by dealing vigorously with the per
petrators, no matter who they are or
to what party they belong. The good
of society and the safety of:our insti- l
tutions demand it, and an effort to|
purify elections where they need puri- |
fying will be upheld by all goeod cit =4
zens regardless of party creed
_Tre NEws can-only speak f Tor- |
rell county. Not even a suspivicn 6l
unfairness has attached iizelf. to ang
election in this county since there has |
been division among the veople, aud it
is nob necessary to read a leciure on
I .
the subject to the herds of the diifer
ent = political parties here. There
will be noobjection to a division of |
managers at all the preci ‘I
al in the approaching election. 'This|
courtesy has been freely extended to
thie populists in the past by the demo
crats of Terrell, and they will do o
soain, Ivisonly & question of majori- |
iy in ‘this county & v, and that |
majerity will not be tainted with n
suspicion i unfairvess, |
Tae Herald says that Senatol Bncon?
in his Albany speech, ‘“made converts
from the cold standavd ranks to the fi
nanciaipolicy oi ofraiic party.’
Thut is hot surprising to. lhese WwWho
know the Bibb statesmian. In fact; the
surprise would bave been had ke not
done so. Georgia has never had a mare
profour d state: man, or oue with moere
ability, bonesty and sincerity thin A,
0. Bacon, and his logic is always con
vincing and bis arguments unanswes
able. Weneed more such men in ptiy
lic affairs,
TrEe Thomasvilic ‘Times tclls the pee
ple that Captain Jammond wiil nou be
a candidate foir- congress on the
s‘sounc”’ money ticket. We grant that
the eantzin is inthe GaLv for principle,
but his conscience is not sufliciently
worked up to atlow him to offer himself
on the alter of patriotism thisfall. lle
puts away the erown. Washington re
fused a job as president and there are
other examplesof laying aside glory
and greatness, and the captain has read
of them.
Trr daily newspapers have chron
icled the prempt acquittal of Judge“
James K. lLiines by a Washington
county jury, tefore whorg he unsweredj
to the charge of larceny after trust.
Although differing wiih him in party
matters, we never had any faith in the
accusation and belicved that it was a
persona! prosecution by political ene
mies. Notwithstanding his political
vagaries, Judge Hines is known and es
teemed throughout Georgia as a man of
the highest character.
May the Lord send usa decrease in‘i
the number of ‘‘street corner generals’
in Dawson, and an increase in the num
ber of loyal men, who don’t know 50
much but do a great deal more. We
are perfectly willing that those who
have done more than we have should
point out our errors, but we are always
impatient under the strictures of the
“gtreet corner generals’” who do noth
ing but tell hew it ought to be done.
Tris paper has honesty enough and
manhood enough to say that all things
are not as they should be in the demo
cratic party in Georgia, but we are not
going, into voluntary exile because
matters are not exactly to our lik
ing. We are going to stay with the
_pa_g't,y organization and try, when op
portunity affords, to help pursuade the
party to undo its errors. And we shall
let no opportunity pass. '
Tue Early County News tells us that
it is not wool gathering as to its politi
cal whereabouts, and that it stands
for “‘sound money, the nation’s honor
and®Hammond for congress.”” There
is no telling what these ‘‘dissatisfied”
freaks won’t do. But we love the dear
doctor, and it sorrows us to see him
going to a mere side-show of the big
circus.
. C
Tae Lumpkin Independent takes a
whack at Grover, too, and says that he
has, by doing all in his power to de
stroy the democratic party during a
four years term of office and then public
ly announcing his desertion of it, laid
himself on the shelf to lead a piscatory
life of inocuous desuetudes,
SExaTOR Bacox will be among
friends in Terrell county next Satur
day. The people here know him and
admire him, angd have always stood by
him in his aspirations. His welcome
[ to Dawson will be a warm one—such a
one as but few other men would re
ceive,

From the Tifton Gazette.
Four years ago our friend Hammond
was denouncing the third party on the
stump. He has gone one step lower
down and is a leader in the fourth party.
These men were loudest in copdemning
some of the silver men for even thinking
of “taking to the woods.”” Now the

HAMMOND AT WAYCROSS.
Hon. H. G, Turner a Boltocrat, Too, Way
cross for Bryan.
Hon. W. M. Hammond, chief of the
‘Georgia boltocrats, delivered an address
at Waycross Friday night under the aus
pices of the Palmer and Buckner club of
that city, and we find (his report of ftin a
Waycross special to the Savannah News:
“(aptain Hammond began in his usu
al eloguent way, but soon turned to the
Chicago platform and proceeded to slash
it with the ordinary sound money sword.
Be said nothing out of the routine, but
used some bitter invectives against the
democratic platform and the convention
that adopted it. He said that he wonld
rather have his right aim cut off thaa
vote for McKinley, but he 1 oked upon
him with more favor than the rcformers.
He said that the republican bolt at St,
Louis was a grand staud play, buu that
the democratic bolt at Chicago was sin
cere. He flaunted Altgeld and 'lillman
in the face of his audience as the lcaders
of the “hicago convention He deciar
ed against an income tax. Ie endeavor
ed to enthuse bis undience by poking
fun at the crganized democracy, but it
did not take. At the mention of Bryan's
name as the candidate of the democracy
the audience broke forth in tremendous
applause., Captain Hammood was liber
ally aj plauded on r.any points in refer
ence to President Cleveland. From the
applause, when he declared for Palmer
and Buckner, he must have had fully
twenty-five sympathizers in the audi
ence.
‘*When Captain Hammond finished 0001,
Meyers read a letter from Ilon. [I. .
Turner, in which he expressed his oy m
pathy with the new party.”’

New York is still democratic and con

lieved that the democratic candidate will
bring a majority down to Harlem river
and Tammany will undoubtedly see that
New York and Kings county is found in
line to the tune of at 30,000 majority. In
fact, it begins to look as if it were only
a question of majority.
