it will be quite interesting to many of
vour readers, I desire to give through
your columns tl]e p‘resen.t; state of the
liquor business 1n Georgia.
From official and other reliable soure
es I find that jwe 'haye_ 739 ‘‘drunker

are miss-named dispensaries. 1t also
inciudes the wholesale trade, a

The internal revenue books show
that 1.432 parties in Georgia have li
cense from the United States govern
ment to sell liquor, and 1,185 of them
are in the above named 32 ‘‘wet” coun
ties, and the remaining 247 are in the
following named 56 counties :
Appling 2, Berrien 2, Bulloch 4,
Bryan 1, Camden 1, Campbell 1, Car

Fight of these 56 counties have 11 so
called dispensaries, and in addition to
their dispensaries they have 28 federal
permits to sell liquor.
I'his gives us 40 “wet” counties, and
they bave the 739 state license to sell
liquor, and 1,224 of the 1,432 U. 8. li
cense granted to sell liquors in the
stace. While 48 of the ““dry” counties
have the remaining 208 U. S. license,
49 *dry” counties have not a single
federai license, The general govern

CUBA’S CARRION BIRD,
Buzzards Are the Soldiers’ Most Useful
Allies,
A feature of campaigning in Cuba
which has inspired the soldiers from the
north with horror and disgust is the
presence of the hugh’ turkey buzzards
on the battlefield. The bird is perhaps
in appearance and habits the raost loath
some creature of the air known to this
continent.
Yet there is much to be said on the
side of the carrion birds. They are sur
best allies, and as soon as a battle
is over their work of sanitation begins,
[n that hot climate death lurks in the
dead and reaches forth for the living.
Close behind death in battle waits death
by pestilence, ready to claim more vice
tims than shot and shell. It is here
that the vultures perform theiv part, ter
rible to think of, but very necessary to
the army’s weal. After the battles
friend and foe lie dead toggther in the
all but impenetrable chaparral. What
the burial parties cannot find in the
tavgled funderwood the instinct of the
valture discovers. Far away in the
sky-distance a black spot appears, grows
larger and sails along on motioaless
wings, until presently it settles down to
earth, Others follow, gathering from
all points of the compass. They settle
in little bands of six or eight, or even a
a dozen, and when they have risen in
stead of the intolerable and horrible
residus of humanity which lay in the
brush, a menace of pestilence, there re
mains only a skeleton to whiten in the
sun and rain,

NOTES ABOUT NEIGHBORS.
Mr. A. L. Martin had the misfortune
to lose his beautiful residence and Its en
tire contents by fire last Friday morning
at Coleman. His wife and babies were
visiting her father’s tamily, Hon, T. C.
Sutton, in Clay county, or tragedy might
have been added, for the fite occurred
about 3 o’clock, and the roof was falling
in before tbe 'neighbors succeeded in
arousing and rescuing Messrs. Martin and
Richard Rhodes, who wus spending the
night with him. The fire was evidently
ot incendiary origin, as it is supposed to
have been started in the stove room
where no fire had been for several days
The loss was complete with only $5OO
insurance.

~ There i# more catarrh 1n this section

put together, and until the last few years

a local disease, and prescribed local

incurable. Science has proven catarrh

Ray's Regiment Has Orders to Get Ready. |
The Exact Day of Starting Neot
Yet Known,
Ray’s regiment of immunes, to which
Lieutenant L. C. Hoyl, Jr.,and a dozen
or more other Dawson and Terrell
county boys belong, has been ordered
to prepare to move on a day’s notice
from Macon to Cuba. The Macon Tel
graph tells of the order for the removal
of the regiment as follows :
Directly after the regimental drill
yesterday afternoon at Camp Price
Colonel Ray summoned to his quarters
all the majors and captains of the
Third regiment and informed {hem
that he had just received qrders from
the war department to be prepared to
start for Santiago de Cuba at a day’s
notice. He said that rations will be
issued hereafter for one day, and that
no more leaves of absence will be
granted. He urged the oflicers to en
force all regulations strictly, so that
there might not be delay when the or
der to move should come,
As soon as the news became known
there way great cheering in the camps,
and there were more letters written
home during the next few hours than
during any .week since the regiment
‘was organized. All were glad that
‘they were soon to see real service, and
it is safe to say- that it will not require
very many hours tobreak camp when
‘the order to move shall come.
~ None of the officers or men seemed to
be worried at the thought of risking
the dangers of disease at Santiago.
