OFFICIAL PAPER OF TERRELL COUNTY
OFFICIAL PAPER OF CITY OF DAWSON.
il
DAWSON, GA., Mar. 12TH., 1902,
DEMOCRATIC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
At the request of seyeral members,
the Democratic Executive Committee
of Terrell county is bereby called to
meet at the court house next Saturday
morning, the 15th inst. at 10.0’clock a.
m., to consider matters of importance
to the party. A full attendance is de
sired. [. L. RAINEY, Chairman.
DAWSON'S FURURE.
That Dawson will ever be an im
mense city, ametropclis with popula
tion running into hundreds of thous
ands, is not within the range of human
probability; but that it will be larger,
very much larger at some time in the
future, there is no reason to doubt.
There are many among its in
habitants whe can recall the time
when it was am insigniticant «<oun
try village, and it is unlikely that the
city’s pieneer settlers locked for the
development which has alreadyiteken
place. They did nov imagine sthat
within a few years their infant sattle
ment would evoive into .a flourishing
little city, the peer of any of its -size
in the state and the superier of many,
dighted by elsctrity, supplied with wa
ter by a splendid aystem, with public
schools whose currieulum and its con
sequent resuits have gained 2 reputa
tion througheut the .state; a city in
which local wholesale houses are do-;
ing a flourishiny business; a ¢ity bhav
ing two railreads, with a third proba
ble. a crate and box factory, an ice
{actory, a steame laundry, a compress,
eteam gins, a gnist mill, & wagoa and
buggy manufactery, and -various.other
miver industries.
The eitizens .of Dawsoe have eonfi
denece im its future,or else.brick-swresi
would not be ereeted and residemces
builv. Gutside capital is jast as canfi
dent, for it is invested heme. Mumici
pal affaire have been .managed by en
terprising but conservative citizzms,
and the meners will «ontinue (to eleet
just rmch administcations. Nothiog is
10 be feared.©a thisscore. |
Dawson has never been a boem town, '
and will never be. Ng attemms along!
tbis line have been maéie, due woreal--
zation of the tact that ie the end pooms
are harmful 2nd produce no real good.
On the contrary, the city’s growsh has |
been comparatively slow, but always
sure and steady. The grewth will con
tinue in this identical maener, amd as
a result investments in property are
. pot risky to any extent. [Rawson real
estate has advanced wonderfully in
the past few years, and will contimue
. to do so.
Then there is an inexplicable at
. traction about the eity which seems 10
,float around in the very atmosphere.
No one who has tived iu Dawson fer
_any lenght of time is ever fully con
tented elsewhere. Many moye away
and return, saying this ie the gardes
#pot of the country. And they ure
correct, if the rich endowments of na
gure and the progressivenes and innate |
affahility of .the citizens of the town
2od county count for anythiog
But while the race is not necessari
1y to the swiflt, it is never to the slug
gard. Let's keep moving—&eep
“snmething doing.’”’ Let’s do several
things. Let’s have the Brunswick &
Birmiogham railroad. Let's have a
cotton factory. Let's have a new pub
lic school building in place of the pres
ent parody. Let’s have a new opera
house. Let's have more residences
built. In short, let's all put onr
shoulders to the wheel and push with
all the force and vigor that is in us.
A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT.
Senator Bacon, in an able speech on
the Hoar bill to protect the life of the.
president, made several pertinent
points the other day. The Hoar bill,
if passed, will undoubtedly endanger
free speech, and Senator Bacoa is nat
uratly very much op.osed to it. Free
speech is one of the fundamental prin
€iples of our government, along wit)
the right to worship according to the
dictates of conscience. It would be
a dangerous precedent indeed to inter
fere with this rieght. Senator Bacon
bolds that it sets another dangerous
precedent to interfere with present
state laws in order to throw a fancied
security about a public oflicial, no mat
ter how high in power he may b 2. The
sepator is correct. There is no neces
sity for interference. The state laws
are effective and prompt encugk, as
shown by the prompt trial, cooviction
aud execution of Guiteau and Czolcosz.
The senior senator from Georgia is
usually to be found on the right side
of public questions, and he certainly is
on this.
AT least one thing appears reasoun
ably sure. The junior senator from
South Carolina won't fling any more
gepithets at the sepior senator from
_Bouth Carolina. ‘
ANENT BISHOP POTTER. ‘
e
Bishop Potter says he felt very much
honored at having Booker T. Wash
ington a guest at his table. Well, the
‘bishop may have been honored, but
Washington wasn’t. The bishop prac
tically concedes his social equality
with the colored educator and noore de
pies him the right. To be sure,he has a
right to affiliate with any one who
strikes his bishopic fancv, but his
tastes do Lot chime at all with those of
other persons who do not fancy break
ing bread with any son of Ham, no
matter how well educated the latter
may be. The entire question resolves
itself into a matter.of taste, and Bishop
Potter’s taste is abominable.
THE lower house of congress has |
again passed, practically without op--l
position, a resolution t 0 amend the
constitution so .as to admit of the{
alection of -senators by popular vete.
Although the sentiment in favor of
the proposed change is obyiously
growing stronger the senators mani
fest no more disposition to consider it
than they haye shown on three pre
vious occasions when .a similar reso
lution passed the house.
THE government of Spain will not
pay for the seamen who lost their liyes
upon the Maine, and the families of
the wictims must lvok to TUncle
Sam for pay. And why should Spaip
staad up and deliver every time she is
asked to do so ?
BeEN TiLLMAN surveyed Teddy’s
invitation proceedings with one-eyed
indifference. 'He doubtless ‘believes
Teddy to be the moss amusing institu
tion extant. By the way, it’s a won
der Teddy didn't invite Booker to
take Bea's place.
BOOKER WASHINGTON asserts that

Booker eays some pretty sensible

THE hanés of the republican majori
ty are still ecorched where they came
i contact with the Tillman hot brick.
Is’s a .pity they didn’t .drop it on
Feye's toe.
WHAT a pity that some good fairy
doesn’t allow Dawson three wishes, 8o
vhat the town might have a.eottoun fac
tory, a new public school bmilding and
2 new opera house.

COMMISSIONER STEVENS.
From the Macon County Citizen,
We are sorry to know 'that ex-Com
missioner ¢f Agriculture R. T. Nesbitt,
is going to run against Hen. O. B.
Stevens, as we have always admired
Colonel Nesbitt and dislike to see him
acain defeated. We will cast our vote
for Mr. Stevens, mainly because he is
a model commissioner and also be
cause he is not only true to his friends
buy magnanimous to his opponents.
The same could be said of Colonel
Nesbitt. but it is peculiarly applicable
to Mr. Stevens. He is a golden-heart
ed gentleman, and we hope he will
win.
From the Sparta Ishma>lite.
0. B. Stevens will be re-elected com
missioner of agriculture if he can keep
the railcoads from killing him.

of the Georgia, Florida and Alabama

port the graaing on the road between
Cuthbert and Arlington progressing
nicely, potwithstanding the weather.
Messrs. Hardaway and Davidson, the

| grading forces between Arlington and
Cuthbert, consisting of about 300
mules, about 400 hands, scrapes, etc.
The extension to Cuthbert will be
rapidly pushed, and soon Cuthbert and
Tallahasse. Fla., will be ronuected.
i SENATOR BACON’S WHISKERS.
l Senator Bacon, says the Washington
correspondent of the Philadelphia
| Ledger, is the subject of a story that
explains why he no longer wearsthe
flowing side-whiskers which were once
his pride and chief claim to distinction.
A new roller skating rink was open
ed in the senator’s town, and he was
invited to attend the preliminary ex
ercises. When these were concluded
the senator alowing some one to strap
a pair of skates to his feet, and he
giided across the floor with much
grace, and with his whiskers floating
out on either side in the breez.
The place was crowded and the sen
‘ator, making his way through the
throng. was suddenly confroited by a
goung man and a young woman, engag
ed in the last struggle to remain
upon their feet. They were holding
each other by the hand, and as the
genator bore down on them they re
ceived him as a drowning man would
a rope.
With one spasmodic effort, the pair
threw themselves at the startled states
man: each seized a whisker and
clung toitlikea frightened woman toa
car strap while going around a curve.
Fer a moment the senator supperted
the two, but the strain and the pain
and the shock were to much for him,
His feet went out from under him and
the trio fellin a .heap, while lowbred
and unsympathetic men of coarse fibre
laughed until the tears streamed down
their brutal faces. When the senator
had extricated himself be went direct
ly te a barber shop and had his face
made as smooth as it is todav.
