SCHOOL TAX ELECTION.
Petition Asking For One Filed With
the Ordinary.
A petition containing 370 names
of registered voters of the coun
ty was filed in the office of the ordi
nary Monday requesting that an
election be ordered to determine
whether a local tax shall be levied
in Terrell county for the support of
the public schools. This number is
one-fourth of the qualified voters of
the county.
The law provides that after the
filing of a petition the ordinary
shall order an election in not less
than twenty nor more than 60 days.
Judge Cheatham will doubtless decide
on a date and publish his official
notice of an election next week.

DAWSON, GA., WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1906.
COUNCIL WILL FIX TAX RATE
THIS AFTERNOON.
Another Important Matter Will Be
Sale of Sewerage Bonds. Regu
lar Meeting of Town Fathers.
The session of the city council
this (Tuesday) afternoon will be
an important one.
The first matter to engage the at
tention of the municipal fathers will
be the sale of the $30,000 of bonds
that were voted sometime ago for
installing a sewerage system. The
bonds bear five per cent interest,
and one bond will be retired each
vear. It is advertised that bids will
be opened at 4 o’clock.
Another matter will be the fixing
of the city tax rate, which, it is un
derstood, will be $lO.OO on the
thousand, the same as it has been
the past several years.
Clerk R. E. Bell has been figuring
on the amount it will take to defray
the expenses of the city another
vear, and the possible, or probable,
income. He finds that $29,000 will
be the least possible amount the
city can get along with, and inci
dentals and unforeseen expenses will
increase this sum to $30,000 or
more.
The tax values of Dawson are as-
sessed at $1,549,000, and a rate of
$lO.OO the thousand will raise about
$15,490. The remaining $14,500 is
expected to come from special license
taxes, street taxes, fines, the ceme
tery and the dispensary.
In calculating the city’'s receipts
next year from sources other than
advalorem tax $9,000 from the dis
pensary is included.
ASPIRANTS MUST PAY UP.
Candidates Have Week in Which to
Hand in Fees.
Candidates for city offices have
just a week in which to pay the
assessments put upon them by the’
executive committee for defraying
the expenses, including tickets, of the
primary on the 17th inst. Next
Wednesday, October 10th, is the last
day they will have to do this, ac
cording to the resolution that was
adopted by the committee.
Mayoralty candidates will pay $5
each, candidates for city treasurer
$3, and aldermanic sprinters $2.50.
Some of the assessments have
been paid, and the runners are hap
py on the way.
