THE PIOUS HYPOCRITE.
The New Bedford Standard says
that Hipple, late president of the
jooted Banking and Trust Company
of Philadelphia, “is execrated al
most as much: for his obstrusive
piety, his avoidance of liquors and
tobacco and his early hours for slum
ber as he is for stealing something
like five million dollars of the bank’s
money. Nor is this altogether with
out reason. People do not like to
see a rascal disguised in the robes
of a conspicuously conventional
sainthood. It is somehow an addi-\
tional breach of confidence to pose
as a pattern man while acting the
thief in the safety of the trust thus
obtained. So, when one of these
hypocrites is discovered the revul
sion of feeling toward him natur
ally breaks out in hard language.”
And the Rome Tribune, who de
spises the pious hypocrite as much
as we do, grows strong in denuncia
tion, and says:
“If there is one thing more than
anything else that we heartily de
spise it is the religious hypocrite,
who uses his supposed piety as a
cloak for his business rascality. We
had rather be defrauded out of our
rights, goods and money by a bun
co-steerer any time than to lose it
through a ‘pillar of the church’ who
we had been disposed to trust a lit
tle more than we ordinarily would
because of his supposed piety. We
do not take much stock in these ex
cessively pious people, anyhow. We
have seen people who ‘cussed’ more
than they ought, but whom we had
yather trust than other people whom
we know spend a good deal of time
praying—especially in public.
“Of all detestable things the pious
hypocrite is the limit.”
WATSON IS OUT.
The news has been given out both
in New York and in Thomson that
Tom Watson is no longer connected
with Watson’'s Magazine. The New
York company which is publishing
the magazine, and in which Colonel
W. D. Mann of unsavory Town Top
ics fame is the chief stockholder,
has re-organized to the exclusion of
Mr. Watson. The reason for dis
pensing with the celebrated popu
list's editorial services was that the
other stockholders did not think it
right for him to use a magazine
printed for the general pubilic to
vent his spleen on political enemies
in Georgia. The last issue of the
publication was burdened with a
twenty-seven page article venting
Mr. Watson's spite against tae editor
of the Macon Telegrarh, with whom
he has an ancient fued. This was
carrying it too far, and the fiery
and scrappy Georgian was bounced
by his associates.
Alr. Watson, it is stated, will give
his entire attention to a weekly
newsnaper published in Augusta.
WHAT MR. BRYAN STANDS FOR.
The tour of Mr. W. J. Bryan
through the south has caused much
discussion as to his views upon pub
lic questions that are uppermost in
the minds of the people at this time.
The curbing of the trusts is his first
and most important word. He would
accomplish this by specific measures,
among them the reduction of the
tariff. Other things he favors is the
election of United States senators by
direct vote of the people; the pro
hibition of campaign contributions
from corporations; a constitutional
amendment which will make possi
ble an income tax; eventual inde
pendence for the Filipinos, and ai
bitration of labor disputes. Mr. Bry
an is today recognized as the one
great leader of his party, and many
if not all of these tenets of his faith
will be incorporated in the democrat
ic platform by the votes of delegates
in the next convention.
The readers of the Atlanta Con
stitutiom realize that the people of
Georgia conferred a great favor up
on them by not nominating Hon.
Clark Howell for governor. The
Constitution is a greatly improved
paper, says the Savannan Press. The
editor of a great paper is a bigger
man and has a broader field for use
fulness every day in the week than
the governor of any state.
Mr. Hearst, already the candidate
of an independent party for govern
or of New York, has made another
bow and accepted the nomination
given him by the recent democratic
convention. A pair of nominations
may weaken instead of strengthen
him. 7They usually do.
There must be a new feature at
the fair in Atlanta this year. The
Atlanta Journal announces that “the
State Agricultural Fair this year con
tains many agricultural exhibits.”
HAS THE LAUGH ON US.
In St. Ptersburg several newspa
pers have printed editorials on the
recent events in Atlanta, and com
pares them with the anti-Jewish
massacres in Russia. ‘The Novoe
Vremva expresses the hope that the
United States will cease to attribute
the Russian excesses to official pro
vocation, instead of admitting that
they are the result of racial ani
mosity.
A squad of white men are now
serving terms in the city chaingang
for taking part in the disgraceful
and harmful Atlanta riot, and the
Fulton county grand jury has just
handed out indictments against
twenty others for the same thing.
‘A bunch of negroes have also been
indicted. That's the way to go about
it. It will do gooed.
Thé Charleston News and Courier
wants a mounted rural police force
in the different counties to prevent
negro crimes. This is in line with
the patrol bill that was introduced
in the Georgia legislature by Mr.
Blackburn of Fulton, and which Joe
Hall said should be entitled ‘‘a bill
to raise hell in Georgia.” j
' Americus is shaking hands with
itself on its low tax rate. The den
jzens of that city will not con
tribute but $12.50 on the thousand
;this year to run the town govern
‘ment. It would be interesting to
know what Americus would consider
a high tax rate.
The Hon. Graver Cleveland does
not approve of Mr. Hearst’s candi
dacy, and declares that the situation
in New York state for the democratic
party is an ‘afflictive one.” Now,
that Mr. Cleveland’'s views are
known, it may mean more votes for
Editor Hearst.
Dickie Hobson, hero, says the next
war will be fought off the Pacific
coast. The activity of the Japanese
gives him some uneasiness, and he
fears they will take the Philippine
islands. Too good to be true.
Governor-Elect Hoke Smith, in a
speech at LaGrange, advocated
stricter enforcement of the vagrant
laws and a change in the system
of negro education. Good and time
ly suggestions, both o6f them.
The town council of Thomasville
has requested the druggists to stop
selling “A. K.” A. K. has the same
effect as whis-k, and is very popular
with many of our neighbors of the
city of pines and yvankees.
It is reported that many New
York divorces are illegal. That may
suit a large number of the parties
interested, who are by this time tired
of the trades they made.
Mr. Taft already ‘has the Cuban
rebellion so tame that it will eat
out of his hand, notes a contempo
rary.
Hard to Down.
Judge Dick Russell, of Jackson
county, QGeorgia, said in his cam
paign for governor against Hoke
Smith that the ambition of his life
was to see his eleven daughters in
their pinafores trooping up Peach
tree street. He can have that grat
ified after all, though the girls will
not wend their way to and from the
executive mansion unless they go
to play with the young Hoke Smiths
—that is, if there are any young
Hoke Smiths. Judge Russell didn’t
go into his tent sulking after he
was beaten for governor. He got
out and hustled for ‘“‘something just
as good’’ as the governorship, and
in the general election last week he
was elected one of the judges for
the new court of appeals. The Geor
gia politician is not easily dis
couraged.—~Charleston (8. C.) Post.
From Cenvention to Cotton Field.
On the 801st ballot, after 42 days
of deliberation, at 11:45 o’clock
Thursday night the deadlock of the
First district democratic convention
was broken by the nomination of
Charles G. Edwards, a 29-year-old
lawer of Savannah. We don’'t know
Mr. Edwards, but hope he will be
able to accept the place ana let the
convention go home to pick its cot
ton, which is now worth a good deal
more than when it assembled.—
Griffin News.
Punishment to Fit the Crime.
It is reported that the Dutch have
stolen one of the Philippine islands
from us. They should be punished
severely for this outrage, and the
penalty proposed by the Washington
Post, that they be compelled to keep
it, is none too severe.—Saturday
Globe.
Blood Poisoning
results from chronic constipation,
which is quickly cured by Dr. King’'s
New Life Pills. They remove all
poisonous germs from the system
and infuse new life and vigor; cure
sour stomach, nausea, headache, diz
ziness and colic without griping or
discomfort. 25c. Guaranteed by

Digging Slowly.
Dawson isn’t making much better
progress on the canal she is digging
than Uncle Sam is making on his
in Panama. Although work was be
gun several weeks ago only about
200 vards have been dug. The bad
weather has greatly interfered.

MUST THE RACES SEPARATE?
The Charleston News and Courier,
which is a very conservative paper,
declares that—
Separation of the races is the only
radical solution of the negro prob
lem in this country. There is noth
ing new about it. It was the Al
mighty whe established the bounds
of the habitation of the races. The
negroes were brought here by com
pulsion; they should be induced to
leave here by persuation. There is
no room for them here, living on
terms of political and social equali
ty with the white people. There is
opportunity for them in the land
of their forefathers. Abraham Lin
coln, who set them free from slavery,
declared that it was impossible for
two diverse races to live together
on the same soil upon terms of
equality. Ulysses S. Grant, who
fought for them, was in favor of
their colonization and settlement in
the West Indies. Dr. Blyden, one of
the ablest negroes that has ever
lived, looked to the removal and set
tlement of the American negro in
Africa. Bishop Turner is now urg-
I ABOUT THE DAWSON NEWS.
“«NOT A BETTER NEWSPAPER.”
Feom the Fitzgerald Leader,
The Dawson News was twenty
four years old last week, and a
cleaner or better newspaper is not
printed in Georgia.
~ «EVEN BETTER THAN BEFORE.”
From the Albany Herald.
We wish to congratulate the Daw
son News on its excellent typographi
cal appearance. Since it has in
stalled its machine it .has been get
ting out a better paper even than
before.
«JF IMPROVEMENT IS POSSIBLE.”
From the Fitzgerald Enterprise.
Editor Rainey, of the Dawson
News, has recently installed a type
setting machine. We may expect an
improvement in that paper, if pos
sible.
“A FIRST-CLASS PAPER."”
From the Cuthbert Leader.
The Dawson News has put in a
type-setting machine. Editor Rainey
believes in first-class equipment for
a first-class paper.
“OTHERS COME AND GO,”
From the Shellman Sun.
The Dawson News celebrated its
twenty-fourth year by installing a
type-setting machine. Papers have
come and gone in Dawson, but The
News, survival of the fittest, flour
ishes and keeps pace with one of
the most prosperous towns in Geor
gia.
_ALREADY “ONE OF THE BEST.”
Krom the Dublin Courier,
The Dawson News has purchased
a linotype. The News is one of the
best papers in the state, and will
be greatly improved.

DEATH OF A CHILD.
Year-Old Babe of Mr. and Mrs. Ed
wards Passes Away.
Although her stay on earth was
short, she will be greatly missed
by her parents and lonely little
brother, Clarence. These two chil
dren loved each other so well that
it breaks his little heart for her to
be taken away from him. It is a
consolation to know that we can
go to her, though she can’'t come
‘vack to us.
On Saturday night, September 29,
1906, the Angel of Death visited the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Edwards and
claimed their dear little sweet Bes
sie Mae, who was so dear to them.
She was born November 14, 1905.
Don’'t weep fond parents, for lit
tle darling Bessie Mae had to go.
Her sufferings are over on this
carth, and we can realize that Jesus
died for her and she will be His
when He comes to make up His
jewels. Your little darling Bessie
Mae is not lost, but has gone before,
for “the Lord giveth and the Lord
taketh away.”
May the weeping parents, broth
er, two little cousins, uncle and two
aunts, and grand parents be re
signed to the. will of God in the re
moval of their little one.
Dr. J. H. Williofrd visited her on
Friday, but the child had to go. All
he could do was of no avail.
The remains were interred at
Turkey creek church Sunday p. m.
at 5 o'clock. |
PPeace be still, thy acking heart
No loanger grieves and mourns. |
Dear Bessie Mae lhias gone to be
With those around the throne. 1
Her soul has now taken its flight
To mansions of glory above, \
To bask in ineffable light,
And dwell in the kingdom of love.
We loved her much, we mourn her
loss;
God loved her more,
He bade her rest; His will be done;
He knoweth the Dbest.
Her Aunt, ROSA MAE WEST.
The Wash Was Scattered.
Julia Mallory, who lives on the
avenue between the residences of
Mr. J. W. F. Lowry and Mr. W. A.
Eubanks, found a large part of the
weekly wash of some family scat
tered along that street Saturday
morning. There were quite a va
riety of garments, and some of them
of nice quality. The clothes were
lost by some driver who was no doubt
intently watching the circus parade.
Harmony Association.
Harmony Primitive Baptist Asso
ciation held its annual session in
Shellman the latter part o. Jast
week, and it was a very interesting
and profitable one. Elders W. T.
Everette and R. H. Jennings attend
ed. Elder Jennings has been secreta
ry of the association for a number
of years.
Furniture of all kinds, art squares,
matting and rugs on the bargain
counters at McLaia Bros.
ing, and has been urging for years,
the removal of the negro to Africa.
There is room and opportunity for
him in the negro republic of Li
beria.
The difficulty of this radical so
lution of the problem is not greater
than the ready resources of this
country. In calculating the cost of
helping the negroes to go to Africa
Carlyle McKinley, in his ‘*‘Appeal to
Pharaoh,” fifteen years ago, reckon
ed that by the expenditure of $32,
000,000 a yvear for tem years the
.whole black and colorel population
of this country could be removed
to Africa in the course of a decade
and without seriously interfering
with the industries of the south, or
imposing any special hardship upon
the negroes. The ‘problem” is
worse now than it was ten or twen
ty years ago. It will grow more
difficult as the years come and go.
It must be settled some day. It
can be settled effectively only by
the separation of the races. The
sooner it is settled the better for
both races and for the sake of all
humanity.
