WASHINGTON, D. C.—Although

here that Mr. Bonaparte said in an

State of Maryland said that if the re

differences they have -a “fighting

No other republican official or
fear-official has admitted that Bryan

This is what the attorney general

Peareq . .reast, it has about disap
may. . ...t should happen, as se
not ... beliéve, that Taft, too, is
- tthtable to the American elets
pretty much the whole cabinet. The
president once said of him that he
was the greatest man who has been
in public life in some century or so.
He is the man the president wanted
to succeed him in the presidency, but
owing to Mr. Root’s long and inti
mate association with certain New
York financiers his present as well
as his past personal history with
Wall street Roosevelt feared that
Root could not be elected. Hence
he selected his second choice, Mr.
Taft.
Taft is more tractable, more
malleable, more amenable than
would have been the more independ
ent and far more intellectual and
foreeful Root.
Hence, though the disappointment
is said to have been ‘great in the
torate, this disappointment will dis
appear altogether. Four years from
now, after Bryan has served out
three years of his term and positively
refuses to accept another nomination,
as he has already declared he will
da, ‘then the G. 0. P. must _turn
again to theé only man who has been
able, in these disintegrating times,
to hold it together.
Meantimé, with Taft and Root the
real court favorites the silent, mys
terious, unassuming but burningly
ambitious Bonaparte, with the royal
blood pumped back and forth in his
veins with a steady glow, ntust lan
guish neglected in that secluded in
nocious desuetude in the vicinity of
Baltimore. He thinks Taft has a
“fighting chance.” So do they all
think, but he is the only one who
dares give utterance to anything
aught than that Taft will be elected
by a plurality as large as M(’.Km
ley's. There is still a little sacrilege
about suggesting that anybody, even
the heir apparent and appointee,
could possibly win such a sweeping
victory as Roosevelt.

Was One of Crowd Who Hanged
: Aged Negro at Springfield.
| Abraham Raymer, charged with
leading the mob that Tynched Wil
liam Donnegan, a negro 80 years
old, during the recent riots at
Springfield, has been found not guil
1y by a jury.
The. jury was out three hours and
took only one ballot.
As soon as ‘the verdict was an
nounced Raymer grasped the hand of
each juror and made a speech thank
ing them.
This is the first riot case, involv
ing a total of 117 imdictments. It
was proved that Raymer was a mem
ber of the mob, and the court held
‘that any member of the mob was
guilty in the eyes of the law, but
{the jury, it is said, acted on the lack
“of evidence to prove that Raymer
+had a hand in the actual lynching.

ROADLESS GEORGIA. |
ransformation Taking Place. Good
Road Idea Grows.
" From the maledictions scattered
broadcast in the mire of roadless
America by despairing bicyclists fif
teen years ago hopes of better things
have taken root. No gift of prophe
¢y is now required to foresee a time
when these hopes will have so far
materialized that a team, if it is a
good one, will be able to haul an
empty wagon over the gumbo roads
of the Mississippi Valley in the
spring, and the publie highway of the
south will be so well buoyed that
light draught automobiles may navi
gate them in comparative safety.
-~ From every part of the country
comes the same encouraging news.
Sixteen states now have highway
commissions that are trying in vari
ous ways to supply the greater need
of the nation, which is good roads.
At one extreme is New York, which,
in 1905, voted to expend fifty mil
lion dollars in building roads. Un
der the plan adopted the state will
build and maintain 3,332 miles con
necting the principal cities and pay
one half the cost of 4,700 miles of
local roads to be built by the coun
ties.
At the other extreme is lowa, the
third state in the union in extent of
road mileage, where the use of pub
lic highways is so vast that if teams
enough could be assembled to do in
one day all the traveling done in the
state in a year the line would reach
one and a half times around the
earth, which doles out an annual ap
propriation of $5,000 to defray the
expenses of the state college’s faculty
while acting in the ca_pacity of high
way commission. With this intro
duction the author writes of what is
being dope and what can be done to
transform roadless America, and the
article is illustrated with fine pho
tographs.—Technical World Maga

NEW YORK MOSQUITO CONTEST.
Staten Island Has Biggest Produced
in Incubator.
In the aquarium at Battery Park,
New York city, there is on free ex
hibition a mosquito incubator in
which the pests are daily hatched:
from larvae and brought to maturity,;
almost ‘“while you wait.” If you
wait long enough~you can See the
whole process. 1
The larvae arc collected from vari-i
ous points about New York, and so
far the Staten Island mosquito leads
all the rest for size. Its ferocity has
to be imagined, but in a duel in the
glass box a mosquito from South
Beach distinguished by yellow spots
drew one of his lances on a Jersey‘
bird, and in two seconds was sawing‘
off his head. : |
Supt. Morgan turns on the gas in
the glass tank every night, and puts
his pets to sleep for good, so as to\
have a fresh habitat for the new ar
rivals, who begin to fly in with the
dawn, looking for an early breakfast.
They Take the Kinks Out.
“I have used Dr. King’s New Life
Pills for many years, with increasing
satisfaction. - They take the kinks
out of stomach, liver and bowels,
without fuss or friction,” says N. H,
Brown of Pittsfield, Vt. > Guaranteed
