CHURCH IS DEPLORED
GOV. WILLIS HOPES FEDERA
TION OF COUNTRY CHURCHES
WILL NOT BE PREVENTED.
COLUBUS, oO.—Decline of the ru
ral churches was deplored by Gov.
Frank B. Willis before the opening
session of the conference of the com
mission on church and country life.
The session was attended by dele
gates to the convention of the federal
council of Chuiches of Christ in
America, The dovernor expressed
the hope that sectarian influences
would not prevent the movement to
federate country churches.
Deeply Interested.
Because of the supreme import
ance of the welfare of the country
church to the social conditions of the
community, not only the people of
Ohio~but the people of the nation
everywhere, are deeply interested in
this conference,”’ said the governor.
“Carefully compiled figures seem to
show beyond question that the rural
churches in Ohio have come upon
evil times, that they have ceased to
grow, that 80 per cent have a mem
bership of less than 100, that one
out of every nine country churches
has been abandoned in recent years,
that only one-third are increasing in
membership and that two-thirds have
either ceased growing or are dying.
It seems especially significant that

less than 40 per cent of the rural
population are church members. Such
a situation is one that demands the
concerted and undivided attention of
the leaders in church thought and
action.
Times Forbid.
“The day of two or three or four
small churches in a community of
two or three hundred people is past.
The times forbid the continuation of
sectarian differences that have agi
tated nd at times disrupted the
churches of former days. This prob
lem must be approached in a broad
way. Unimportant sectarian differ
ences must be wiped away. The over
lapping of territory and the main
tenance of small and weak churches
must be abandoned. Neighboring
churches of all denominations must
work together for the solution of
their problems. Social conditions
must be given consideration. It is
not enough that the church do Sun
day work; it must make itself felt
in the every-day life of the com
munity.”

CONVICT ESCAPED BUT

~ COMES BACK TO PEN
LIFE TERMER TALKED IT OVER
WITH WIFE AND MOTHER,
} RETURNS TO PEN.
~ ATLANTA.—One of the most un
‘usual incidents in the history of the
‘Atlanta federal prison occurred Fri
day morning, when Mark Blenken
ship, 50 years old, a ‘‘lifer’” who es
caped three weeks ago from the pris
on chicken farm, where he was a
trusty, returned and voluntarily
gave himself up to Warden S. G.
Zerbst.
Blenkenship told the warden that
he had gone from Atlanta to his for
mer home at Sylacauga, Ala., where
he saw his old mother and his wife.
He said he talked it over with them,
and that they advised him to go back
and serve his time—his life. So he
told his mother and wife goodbye
and caught a train for Atlanta to re
enter the prison whose walls will
hold him until he dies.
Most prisoners as a punishment
for escaping lose their ‘‘sood time,”
the time off of their sentences earned
by good behavior. But Blenkenship
will not lose this because a man sen
tenced for life doesn’'t get any ‘‘good
time”— death offers the only means
of freedom. And Blenkenship will
not be punished for escaping; per
haps, even, said Warden Zerbst, he
may be made a trusty again. This
will not be done at once, said the
warden; first he must talk to the
man and sound him out before again
trusting him, |
A search by the many agents of the‘
government had failed to find a clue
to Blenkenship’'s whereabouts, and it
is possible that he misht have re
mained in the mountain fastnesses
near his Alabama home for many
vears before being caught. But his
mother and wife told him to come
back and pay his penalty, so he
came.
Blenkenship was sentenced to life
imprisonment in the United States
court of Alabama after bein., found
guilty of conspiracy to murder a rev-,
enue officer. He was a young moun
taineer, hale and strong, when sen
tenced fifteen yvears ago; now he is a
gray-haired man, old and broken.
Warden Zerbst said that his vol
untary return under the circum
stances was most remarkable.

TURBOTTVILLE, Pa.—For twen
