CONGRESS DOES NOT EXPECT
FURTHER ADMINISTRATIVE
EFFORT TO ENACT LAW.
The administration’s fight for a
war censorship on newspapers was
again lost in congress Thursday, at
least for the present, when the house
refused, by a vote of 184 to 144, to
accept even the modified censorship
section written into the espionage

bill in conference. The senate al
ready is on record as opposed to a
censorship, and leaders in congress
do not expect any further adminis
trative effort to enact one soon.
The test in the house came on a
motion to recommit the espionage
bill with instructions that the cen
sorship regulation be eliminated.
No Comment by Wilson.
No comment on the outcome in the
house was forthcoming from the
white house.
In the house debate opponents of
censorship argued that a restriction
such as the conferees proposed would
violate the right of a free press. The
voluntary censorship under which
the country’s newspapers now are
working was pointed to as demon
strating the patriotism of editors and
as proving that no legal restrictions
are needed.
The Georgia congressmen who
voted against censorship were Bell,
Brand, Larsen, Overstreet and Vin
son.
In the senate, in which a censor
ship bill has also been defeated, both
Senators Smith and Hardwick are
on record as having voted against it.

NEARLY FOUR HUNDRED LUM

PORTABLE MILLS.
Ten portable sawmill units will
'soon be on their way to England. Ac
‘companying the mills will be between
360 and 370 experienced lumbermen,
‘'who will operate the mills for the al
lies. The British government will
provide safe transportation.
Each New England state will fur
nish one unit and the other four will
be raised by private subscriptions.
Many offers of portable mills have
been received. The men in charge
sending the units also have listed the
names of several lumberjacks, includ
ing a student at ‘Yale.
The Massachusetts committee on
public safety took up the question
after it had been announced that
England badly needs lumbermen and
sawmills,
