A SPECIALTY
A. J. Baldwin & C
. J. win ompany
DAWSON, GEORGIA :
churchman has many friends in the
city who always welcome his coming.
The subject of the discourse was
“Living Epistles of Christ,” based
upon second Corinthians 3:1-3. The
bishop emphasized the fact that
Christian men and women are Christ’s
epistles known and read of all men,
and that nothing really counts for
more in the kingdom than the life
of the believer. The times in which
we live, he insisted, the confusion
and chaos in the world and the seri
ous problems growing out of the so
cial unrest of the day demand, as
never before, that the members of all
churches be true witnesses for Christ.
“The aim of Christianity,” he stated,
“js not primarily to enable men to
‘escape hell and win heaven, but to
make them pure, noble and Christ
like. The man who is religious mere
ly to avoid the tortures of the damn
ed or to enjoy the happiness of the
redeemed is not a very good man. The
principles of justice, charity and gen
uine brotherliness must be exempli
fied in our daily lives.”
~ The bishop explained that there
are three things necessary on the part
of the church to adequately and faith
fully represent Christ to the world :
unity, unworldliness and unselfish
ness. He deplored the divisions among
Christian people and expressed the
hope that the time nright soon come
when there would be one altar and
one communion.
Worldliness, he contended, is not
so much in doing certain things which
are commonly forbidden, as in hav
ing a spirit out of accord with the
Christ spirit.
The message closed with an appeal
to Christians of all communions to
give the world a more perfect exem
plification and demonstration of the
unity, self-sacrifice and unselfish ser
vice which are in Christ Jesus.

| BELLS MARKED EVENT.
There was nothing spectacular
about Dawson’s celebration of con
stitutional prohibition, but possibly
no more impressive and beautiful ser
vice was held anywhere than the
splendid program enjoyed by a large
number of interested spectators Fri
day at the Methodist church. It was
a true observance of the day in a
spirit of humility and thanksgiving
for past victories and a girding for
duties and responsibilities of the fu
ture, for well do the temperance
forces realize that the enemy, while
overthrown, is not destroyed.
The full program as given in the
last issue of The News was carried
out, with Mrs. C. A. Harris, the pres
ident, in charge., The decorations of
the auditorium gave just the setting
for the truly patriotic and inspiring
occasion. The green ferns massed
about the chancel were relieved by
vases of white japonicas, while a
large white bow was conspicuously
displayed. Above the organ loft was
suspended a large United States flag
and on either side were smaller flags
of other nations, giving a bright
touch of color.
Special devotional services were
held in the church at the noontide
hour, while out in the city the hour
was marked by the blowing of whis
tles, the ringing of fire bells and oth
er noisy demonstrations. A bountiful
lunch was served and a happy social
hour spent in the annex.
The temperance workers fully real
ize that we are only reaping what
was sown in tears by the pioneers to
whom is accorded all the glory of
victory.
