OIL PROSPECTS ARE
SEEN IN TERRELL

MR. ROWLAND, OF NEW YORK,!
IS IN COUNTY SECURING ‘
OPTIONS ON LAND. '
Mr. J. D. Rowland and son of
New York have been in the county
for several days representing capital
ists of the north who are interested
in the development of oil lands. Ex
perts who have made a careful sur
vey of the territory from Wakulla, |
Fla., up through Tallahassee and in
to Georgia are firm in the belief
that a strata which runs through all
the counties south of Dawson and up
into Terrell strongly indicates oil.
Leases have been granted by a
‘number of prominent citizens who
‘own farm lands about Herod and
Graves.
It is said that active preparations
for boring will be made as soon as
the company can get leases on as
much land as they require before be
ginning the work.
Meanwhile, those owning property
in the favored section will not allow
their rosy dreams to sweep them off
ther feet. There is, however, the
greatest ' interest on the part of
the people of the county in the pro
ject,

MRS. CHRISTIE IS AT
IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL SERVICE
AT THE FAMILY HOME WAS
LARGELY ATTENDED.
The remains of Mrs. D. K. Chris
tie, notice of whose death in Atlanta
was carried in the last issue of The
News, reached Dawson on the early
morning train Wednesday., A sim
ple, touching funeral service in keep
ing with the quiet life of the gentle
sleeper was held at the family resi-‘
dence at 4 o’clock conducted by
Rev. T. H. Thompson. A large
gathering of Dawson relatives and
friends and many from out of town
filled the house in silent and sin
cere tribute to this beloved woman.
Mrs. Christie was 61 years of age,
and until a few months ago was
actively interested in all the affairs
of her home, where it was her high
est joy to minister to those she
loved with all the tenderness and de
votion of a true wife and mother. In
addition to the cares and responsibil
ities incident to the rearing of a
large family Mrs, Christie found time
to gratify her love for flowers, and
the surroundings of her home were
always bright and beautiful. In this‘
peaceful and congenial atmosphere
she developed the crowning virtues
of womanhood—faithfulness to duty
and unselfish service.
Mrs. Christie spent several weeks
in a private hospital in Atlanta,
where the skill of specialists was em
ployed in the vain hope that she
might be restored to health.
The deceased is survived by her
husband, Mr. D. K. Christie, and ten
children. They are Walter E. Chris
tie, of Atlanta; O. P. Christie, of
' Parrott; D. K. Christie, Jr., of Daw
son; Mrs. C. V. Youmans, of Atlan
ta; Mrs. I. C. Melton, of Dawson;
Mrs. S. O. Thompson, of Odum;
Mrs. J. S. Plaxco, of Augusta; Mrs.
W. V. Bell, of Hawkinsville; Mrs. }
E. O’Hara, of Jacksonville, Fla., and
| Miss Ida Christie, of Dawson. She is
also survived by two brothers, J. H.
Whaley and J. C. Whaley, of Par
rott, and one sister, Mrs. J. H. Wil
liford of the same place.
