HEALTH IN TERRELL COUNTY
IN point of -health it may surprise many farther north in Georgia
when told that there are but few spots in the state which can show
a lower mortality, hence a better record in the general health of the
community. There is no section without its cemetery, none where old
age refuses to creep on. “The young may die and the old must” in
all climes, but when the measure of the average life is taken in Terrell
county we do not believe that any county in the state can make a bet
ter showing.” | e . '
There are now living in the county many who were reared higher up
in the state where the idea prevails that here about all the lands are
covered more or less extensively by ponds, swamps and marsh, and that
a malarial condition prevails almost the year through. These who have
ventured to become citizens of Terrell will bear witness that no error
could be greater. But few sections of the state are entirely free from
what we are pleased to refer to as malaria or biliousness at some time
in the year. To some extent this is true here, but such is very limited,
so much so that a government inspector who visited the county a few
months ago for the purpose of investigating malaria conditions found
such a condition of excellent drainage, rolling lands, and freedom from
extensive swamps as that he left for other points which were in real
need of his service, saying there is small need here for government in
terest along this line. ‘ '
As for Typhoid fever there is not less in any county in
Georgia than here. There has been but one case of genuine
typhoid in Dawson, the county site, in ten years or. more,
and it was imported from the hills of Kentucky. What fevers
we have are of very short duration, requiring trom one to
a half dozen visits from a physician. - Chills are rare, and

easily broken when they do show up. During winter
months of course we havethe diseases peculiar almost every
where to that season to a greater or less extent, depending
in quantity on the severity of the weather. Winter being
usually very mild, colds and allied troubles are, as a rule,
comparatively few and mild in nature.
When the stranger comes among us all he has to do to be
convinced that what is said here does not constitute “pipe
dreams,” something said only for advertising purposes, 1s to
look into the faces of the population, both men and women_
and catch himself wondering if he is among the mountains
of North Georgia. Ruddy cheeks, plump contours and all
the outside evidences of real health is self evident. The
mortality record among the white residents of the county’s
capital, Dawson, has been observed for a number of years
and it has not for something like twenty years been higher
than 1.25 per cent, and as low as 0.8 of one per cent. How
many sections of like size in the state can show a better
mortality record? .
With such facts, and they are facts, which are easily estab
lished, there is every reason why people among the rugged
hills of farther up the state and from other states should
move out from where they are, come among us, and learn
what a wonderful difference is awaiting. them here. No
rocks to roll and pile, no waste land to plow around, no
gullies to contend with, but instead lands to be had which
will last for a thousand years and which grow better as the
years go by, if in the hands of a man who is unafflicted by
enui, laziness and a lack of gray matter.
