FIRST OF THE FALL MEETINGS]
AN INTERESTING ONE. FEAT- }
URED BY GOOD PROGRAM. |
The Mary Brantley chapter, U. D.
C., held the first meeting for the
year 1920-21 at the club house on
Friday afternoon. The program was
opened with the usual devotional ex
ercises, after which the president,
Mrs, L. Lamar, gave a gracious
greeting to the chapter and then
briefly outlined the plan of work
for the ensuing year.
. The reports from the various de
partments of work showed that com
'mittees had been active during the
summer vacation. The report from
}the educational committee yas espe
cially interesting and - encouraging.
The chapter has placed, through its
gift scholarship and loan fund plan,
seventeen young people in as many
colleges and business schools in the
state. This educational work express
es the chapter’s beautiful memory
of the Confederate soldier.
The following were elected to
represent the chapter in the state
convention, which will convene in
Macon on October 14: Mrs. L. Lamar,
ex-officio; Mesdames J. D. Weaver,
D. M. Dismuke, George Johnson and
I. C. Melton.
The study of the afternoon was
the Confederate navy. Mrs. E. C.
Paschal’s paper, “The Boat, Geor
gia,” read by Mrs. J. H. Lewis, was
especially enjoyed. Mrs, J. D. Weav
er told-in an entertaining manner
the story of the first submarine and
sorpedo. She gave information that
was received by the chapter with ap
preciation.
The program was followed by a
social hour, which was thoroughly
enjoyed by the chapter member and
their guests, the lady teachers of
the Dawson high school. The hostess
es served a delicious ice course.

! JESUS AT MARRIAGE FEASTS
WAS SUBJECT OF PASTOR
Says Would Materially Lessen the
? Number of Divorces.
Those who attended preaching at
the Methodist church Sunday morn
ing and night heard good sermons.
At the 11 o’clock hour Pastor Thom
son used the marriage feast at Ca
nah of Gallilee as the basis of his
talk. The benefit of the presence of
Jesus at marriage feasts was one of
the strong points brought out, and
left the impression that if Jesus was
invited to every marriage there
would be very few, if any, divorces.
“We are workers together with
God,” were the words used at the
evening hour. In his remarks Mr.
‘Thomson stated that it was the ten
‘dency in many quarters now to get
‘the maximum of remuneration for
‘the minmum of service, which will
‘always create trouble.
"7 At the Sunday school hour classes
were promoted from the primary]
room to the annex. The eollection
for the orphans’ home went consid
erably over the hundred dollar mark.
