REPRESENTATIVE OF ATLAN
TA, STATE HEADQUARTERS,
IN THE CITY THIS WEEK.
Mrs. Sharpe and Armenian orphan
adoption have been received very cor
dially by our people, for her plan of
presenting the appeal does not tax the
county or individuals as campaigns
for funds have n the past.
Mrs. Sharpe said, “Of all the calls
before the people the call of outraged,
long-suffering Armenia comes first in
the hearts of American people; first
in importance and in worthiness.”
There are several reasons for this:
Armenia Educationally.
One reason: Before the late war
Armenia had the very best of schools
and colleges and her people were the
most enlightened people of the Near
East. Armenia has made very valua
ble contributions in the fields of ab
stract and concrete sciences. During
and since the war the Turks have
practically demolished all educational
centers.
’Armenia Religiously.
AnotHer reason: Armenia is the old
est Christian nation in the world. The
Armenians are distinguished for their
deep spirituality, and becuase of their
adherence to the Christian religion
have given probably more martyrs to
the Christion faith than all other na
tions combined. The protestant de
nominations dominate in Armenia.
Armenia Patriotically.
And one more reason: It should not
be forgotten that Armenia was our
ally in the world war. She lost more
men prdPortionately in open battle,
exclusive of massacre and deportation
than any nation in the war. She lost
more than a million men in open bat
tle. Isn't Armenia deserving of our
highest consideration?
In explaining her plan of work Mrs,
Sharpe said further: It only takes $5
a month or $6O a year to care for an
orphan, and the support of one is call
ed “An adoption.” We are gving all
churches, Sunday schools, women’s
organizations, commercial and frater
‘nal groups the opportunity to share in
this wonderful investment, the sav
ing of a life to the world, and to the
“Future Aremina!” .
~ Under the able leadership oi your
‘county chairman, Hon. M. C. Ed
wards, the work for Terrell county is
almost completed, for every group ap
proached so far has made a liberal re
sponise. There isn’t a group in the list
that can’t easily give from its surplus,
ts waste; its pleasures and many in
dulgencies enough to care for one or
more Armenian orphans for a year.
There is today in old Bible lands
110,000 of these homeless, fatherless
and motherless ones, hungry and with
out clothes, except provided for by the
Near East Relief. 2,400 of these chil
dren at Brusa, Asia Minor, are allotted
to Georgia. ‘Will Georgia do her part?
Generous Responses.
Sunday was a great day for the or
phans of Armenia in Dawson. Mrs.
Sharpe with the local chairman pre
sented this cause to the Baptist and
Methodist Sunday schools, and the
spontaneous response was worthy of
these two great organizations.
Brevity of tiime made it impossible
to present the matter to other Sunday
schools or the younger members of
‘the Sunday schools, but it is confi
‘dently expected that these classes will
be heard from by the next issue of
'The News, as will other Sunday
‘schools.
- The following classes each agreed
to support an orphan during the year
at the Baptist church: Ladies Bible
class,» Margaret Tweedy class, Men’s
Bible class, Baraca Bible class. At the
Methodist church: Wesley Bible class,
S. P. I. class, Men’s Bible class, Men’s
Baraca class.
These classes have already contrib
uted largely as classes and individual
lv. The Wesley Bible class has sent
clothing to the value of $75.00 to Eu
ropean relief. The Margaret Tweedy
class has forwarded ten dollars to Dr.
McCree. The Methodist Baraca class
has forwarded ten dollars and con
tributed twelve dollars to the local
chairman. Many individuals have con
tributed to this work, to the European
relief through the Literary Digest and
to the Chinese relief. The chairman
asks each Sunday school teacher in
Dawson to act as a member of the
committee of this work. Each presi
dent of any local organization of men
or women, clubs, societies or orders
to present this cause.
1 particularly name on this com
mittee the superintendents of every
Sunday school in Terrell county, and
ask such to communicate " with me.
Previously reported $62.60. Present
subscription totals $542.62. This is|
splendid. There will be no “drive.”

MRS. M'DOWELL VICTIM |
OF A PAINFUL ACCIDENT‘
|
Fell From Second Story Down Flight
Of Stairs.
Mrs. R. E. McDowell was very
painfully injured Wednesday by a f{all
down the long flight of stairs from
the second story of her residence,
striking with such force on the land
ing that she sustained a deep cut on
one knee, which required several
stitches, and was otherwise consid
erably bruised. She has been confined
to her bed since the accident.
Thet accident occurred when she
was reaching over the banisters at the
head of the stairway to hand some
thing to Mrs. Arthur McDowell, her
foot turning in such a way that she
fell full length. Her {iriends are con
gratulating her that the injury was
not more serious.

PROPERTY OWNERS OBJECT
TO PAYING FOR SEWERS
File a‘Vigomus Protest Before City
Council. Represented by Attorney.
Abutting property owners have vig
orously protested before the city coun
cil to being required to pay for the
installation of storm sewers in con
nection with the street paving. Attor
ney H. A. Wilkinson appeared before
the council and voiced the protest of
the objectors. . .
It is contended that the city would
have to put in and maintain storm
sewers regardless of whether the
streets were paved or not, and that
they cannot be properly charged as
part of the cost of paving.
The matter was referred to a com
mittee consisting of Aldermen Low
rey, Weaver and Pace, who will make
a report at the next meeting of the
council.
