SUGGESTION THAT IT BE
TAUGHT IN GEORGIA TAKES
' PECULIAR TURN.
ATLANTA, Ga.—Suggestion some
times take peculiar and amusing turns.
For example, take the recent sugges
tion that the constitution of Georgia
and of the United States be taught in
the public schools of Georgia.
This was first suggested by organi
zations furthering I"mt\stantism. but
it now appears that other religious or
ganizations also favor it just as
strongly, the last being the Jewish
Educational Alliance of Atlanta, which
has passed resolutions ‘“heartily in
sympathy “with the, movement.”
Catholics are also said to be in fa
vor of it. The reason for this, it is
pointed out, is obvious. Both the Con
stitution of Georgia and of the Unit
ed States guarantee religious freedom,
or right to worship as one pleases.
An if the constitutions of both state
and nation are studied closer, religious
leaders here say, there will be less
disposition toward religious persecu
tion in Georgia, which is said to exist
in some sections of the state. |
One prominent man oi affairs, \\'hmi
for personal reasons asked that hisj
name be witheld, made this statement
today: |
“Obeying civil laws and at the >mm~‘
time being privileged to do as omne!
chooses in matters personal or reli
gious, as long as civil laws are obey
ed is the fundamental basis of our
government, and was so recognized
and practiced by ‘the late U. S. S«-na-‘
tor Thomas E. Watson, 'of Georgia.
Separation of church and state and |
free schools had no stronger cham- |
pion than he, yet in the education of
members of his family he did as he
pleased.
“His daughters at oue time attend
ed the Catholic school at Washing
ton, Ga., in preference to free schools
at Thomson. Later they were sent tn}
Agnes Scott college in preference to |
the state colleges. His grandchildren
were sent to an Episcopal college at
Washington, D. C., ip preference to
state-supported colleges in Georgia. |
So, one might well point out, that the |
study of the constitution of the st:m"
and the nation in Georgia schools will
have a broadening effect on the risingi
generation, regardless of religious af
filiations.” l
Airship Flight to Panama
And Return Is Planned
Bajlloon Flight Will ‘Also Be Made to
Determine Atmospheric Conditions.
AKRON, O.—That the successful
transcontinental flight of the . army
airship C-2 last year had supplied the
government with available data on
meteorological conditions, supplies
and landing places which would prob
ably have the effect of stimulating sim
ilar flights was stated here today by
Major H. A. Strauss, light-than-air
engineering officer of McCook Field,
Dayton, commander of the ship or
her cross-country trip, who is here on
a®consultation visit to army aeronauti
cal officers, and engineers of the Good
vear Tire and Rubber Co. ?
“As a result of the C-2 accomplish
ment plans are being made for an
airship flight to Panama and return,
the purpose being to obtain similar in
formaton to that gained on last year’s
trip,” he said.
“No date has vet been set for this
flight, which is contingent on the ap
proval of the war department.
“It is likely that the trip will be
made in a ship of the TC type, which
has about 30,000 cubic feet capacity
more than the C type.
“Some consideration is also being
given to the idea of using a ship of
the Zodiac tvpe, which with its 350,-
000 cubic feet is the largest type of
non-rigid airship in America.
“The engineering dvision of the
aeronautical department is also work
g on equipment for a forthcoming
free balloon flight to determine atmos
pheric conditions at high altitudes as
they affect lighter-than-air craft.
A feature of the equipment now
being designed will be the substitution
of a metal cabinet for the usual bask
et, which will permit operation of the
ballocn under ordinary pressure even
at such high altitudes.”
The National Security League says
there are 400,000 “reds” in America—
that's 400,000 too many.

Five Judges Were
Born in Log Huls
ST. PAUL, Minn—Birth in
humble surroundings as augury to
success in later life is again demon
strated by the fact that every mem
ber and commissioner of the Min
nesota state supreme court started
life in a log cabin.
This fact was disclosed when
Miss Grace Kaercher, clerk of the
supreme court, completed a record
of personal information of the five
justices and the two commission
ers of the supreme bench.
In each instance the members
of the high court were born in a
log cabin, some in this state, while
others were born in log cabins sit
