New York Herald')
© It is widely believed that Presi
dent Cleveland will certainly be
nominated next ycar. Who'is to
hold the second place on the tick
et?
In antebelum days it was the in
variable practice to take either the
President or the Vice-President
from the South. That was changed
by the war.
But the war ended more than
twenty years ago. A new South
bas sprung up—~new not only induss
trially, commercially and socially,
- but politically. The country has
become reunited--one again. The
causes that for a time barred South
ern states men from national polit
ical preferment have'lost all the
force they everhad. Southern leg
islator:, Cabinet officers, foreign
Ministers and judzes have been
wisely called into the national ser—
vice. Is it not time that the sec
ond highest post ot honor in the
government be again opened to the
Bouth? -
The Herald says yes. The
Democratic party can now well af
ford to name a Southerner for the
Vice Presidency, and it may
strengthen its ticket by doing so.
What Southerner is most widely
and favorably known,North as well
as South? By populat acclamation
Henry W. Grady, of Atlanta, will
at once be accorded that distince
tion. He has the confidence, not
only of the party but also of the
entire country, and his name, as
Vice-President on the ticket head
ed by Mr. Cleveland would arouse
Democratic enthusiasm througout
the land:
The Herald proposes this ticket
for 1888:

paste it must be filled with the
liquor; but if in a raised crust, the
