the wegro farm laborors, advising
them to strike for higher wages and
it retused, to arm themselves and
fight for it. It pecessary burn

An interstate convention of fare
mers, of the cotton States, will
copvene at Atlants, begining on
August 16th. This convention
promises to a decided success, in

5 In 1884 Bam snelling, a negro
'man, " murdered Seab Butts, a
| young negro man in cold blood, on
| the plantation of C Stanly near
' Cuthbert and made his escape. A
' few days ago it was learned that
| Bam was st his father-in-law’,
ion N M Weaver's farm, near the
| city limits: Mr. N A Burge notis
| fied the sheriff of his whereabouts,
| who sent Baliff Skipper with him
|to make the arrest. Mr. J T Stan
’ly was requested to go to identity
the negro. All were well armed.
When Skipper opened the door
and stepped inside the hou e, two
or three steps he saw Sam behind
the bed and ordered him out. In
stantly Sam fired with a pistol, the
ball striking Skipper in the lett side
the second shot taking effect in the
arm. AsStanley entered the door
another ehot struck him in the hip
Stanly fired upau the negro, with
his rifle.
The second shot from the negro’s
pistol, was fired simultainously
with the rifle, which paralyzed
Stanly’s lett arm and it fell to his
side. Stanly then called to Burge
who was trying toopen the back
door. As Burze came
to the door the negro jumped ou‘t'
and fired another shot and ran off,
as he jumpe(rthe fence Burge fired
upon him with small shot.
Skipper is dead, Stanly badly
wounded, and the negro mude |

merchants will take some step in
sprinkling Main street, to protect
their goods from the dust, during
the Summer months. From what
we can learn the City Council has
refused to pay cut any money for .'
a sprinkler, and, in that case, the
duty falls on the merchauts. Al
ready we have heard some of our
citizens say that they would pnyi
five and ten dollars. With asmall |
amount from each merchant it will
be no trouble to have the sprinkler,
and the benefit to be derived will
more than pay for the cost of it.
