AE‘M for a New England
journal says that ‘‘warm drinks
tend to produce milk. The same
amount of grain, fed ina warm,
thin gruel, will produce more milk
and butter of richer quality than
when used dry, and some advocate
the steaming ot hay and other food.
Cutting food for horses and cattle
is recommended Ly all who have
tried it, as giving an economical
control over the supply, security
against waste, and the facility of
mixing different kinds of food inl
such proportions as may be found
best. " Coru stalks, coarse hay and |
straw may be fed to great advant- ‘
age. Corn stalks well cured are
thus made worth as much as the
best hay, and one or two quarts of
meal will make a bushel of cut
straw equal to hay. Roots in this
case are necessary as a appetizer
and to prevent constipation, and
may take the place of grain. Cat
tle should always have a supply of
salt, especially those in the interi
or, such needing it more than those
kept near the ocean,
The dry feed usually given cows
in cold weather is less stimulating
to milk production than the green
herbage they get at pasture. The
had effects of too dry feed are gens
erally intensified by lack of water.
This is especially true where only
cold water is provided. The large
quantity that cows should drink
chills their stomachs and retards
digestion, They will not drink as
much asis good for them unless
the icecold chill is taken off. The
best arrangement is to have a cis
tern in a barn basement, where
the water will not freeze; and
where cows may drink and be
sheltered from cold winds.
Mr. James R Magill says he uss
es sweet milk and molasses for
colic in horses and it works well.
One pint and a half of sweet
milk and a halt pint of molasses,
mixed thoroughly, used as a
drench for the sick horse, will give
relief.
The American Bison.
The American bison, or buffalo,
now rapidly becoming extinct, has
several traits ot character peculia=
rly his own. If alarmed, he starts
off at once, and always runs against
the wind, his sense of smell appear
ing to be better than his eye
sight.
What is a most remarkable tact,
a herd of buffalo, while grazing,
always post and maintain a line of
sentinels to warn the main body of ‘
the approach of danger.
When a strange object comes
within sight or smelling distance.
these sentinels immediately give
the alarm by tossing up their heads
and tails and bellowing furiously.
The whole herd instantly heed
the warning and are sorn in mos
tion.
Buffalos run with fore-legs stiff,
which fact, together with their ug
ly looking humps and the lowness
of their heads, gives a rocking
swing to their gait.
If a herd, when in full motion,
have to cross a road on which wag
ong are traveling, they change
their course but little; and it
gometimes happens that large bands
will pass within a stone’s throw of
@ caravan.
At might, the bands are quite
8-stematic in forming their camps.
In the centre are placed the cows
and calyes, while to guard against
the wolves, large numbers of which
always follow them, they station
on their outposts old bulls.
The age to which a buflalo may
attain is not known, but it is cer—
tain that they are generally long
liged, when not prematurely cut
oft.
The burning ot the big theatre
in Paris, last week, turns out to be
a most appalling calamity. From
160 to 200 persons perished there.
A most dastardly story of coward
ice 18 revealed in the report, which
says: ‘Late this afternoon the
bodies of nineteen women, all in
tull dress, were found lying togeth
er at the bottom of the staircase
leading from the second story.—
These ladies all had escorts to the
theater, but no remains of men
were found anywhere near where
the women were burned to death.’
The alleged men who escorted
those unfortunate women to the
theatre and evidently deserted
them to save themselves ought to
be hunted up and brought into
public disgrace, it nothing more
can be done with them.—News&
Advertiser.
The Star of Bethlehem.
Boston Herald.]
' ‘No, I haven’t seen the star of
Bethlehem,’ said Prof. Pickering,
of the Harvard College Observato
ry, last evening. ‘I looked for it
Wednesday evening when I heard
that some professor in Kentucky,
unknown to me, had discovered its
‘presence in the Heavens, but I
could not see it. I looked for it
‘with the naked eye. Itisn’t there,
and the chances of its appearance
are very uncertain, indeed. Ass
tronomers are doultful about it.
Many of them do not believe it will
come at all, T have received no
official information from any quars
ter that the reappearance of the
star had been noted by responsible
astronomers. Should it make its
reappearance, it would be an im
portant astronomical phenomenon,
and weuld be observed with great
scientific interest all over the world.
[ts value t~ astronomical study can
hardly be determined except upon
its reappearance.
‘Undoubtedly it would be of
great value, and scientists would
probably be enabled to ascertain
its cause, Should it appear it would
be made a special study at Hars
vard Uaiversity Observatory. As
tronomers have but little authentic
information about the so-called star
of Bethlehem. The only reliable
data are those secured by Tyche
Brahe, the celebrated Danish As
tronomer, in 1572, who discovered
a very bright star in Cassiopeia,
which was so billiant that it could
be seen with the naked eye in the
day time.
About 1260 there was a similar
star, and there was probably one
about 900, but there is no certain
ty that they were the same. From
this arcse the idea that there is ai
star of Bethlehem which appears
every 315 years or so. As to the
beliet that great misfortunes will
occur upon the earth ag a result of
the reappearance of the star, that
is sheer nonsense, But just anoth
er word, There is no historical
evidence whatever that the star of
Bethlehem is the star which is s:id
to have appeared upon the birth of
Christ. The Bible speaks ot it as
the ‘Star of the East’ This could
not have been the star of Bethle
hem, as that did not appear in
the East, but in the North.’
The Country Press Heard From.
When the inter-state commerce
law went into effect and free passes
were abolished, the country editor
was two dumfounded to speak for
some time. He couldn’t realize that
the time honored custom of *‘dead
heading” over railroads had been
swept away. But he gradually re
covered from his amazement, and
then he was mad. He took the
railroad timestable out of his paper
and killed every free railroad ad
-vertisement. Then he began to
fire away ot the roads and their
‘ management.
~ Below are a few extracts trom
‘the country press that the Texas
Biftings has been able to cull:
It doesn’t hurt us any to walk.
It is good for us, In fact, when
‘we had an annual on the X. & Q.
road we always walked when we
was in a hurry.—Flytown Ran
ger.
Hardly a day passes without an
accident on the alleged railroad
that runs—or rather ecrawls—
‘through this town. It’s rails are
|oiten broken like the company.—
' Borax Plaster.
Can nothing he done to stop the
ghrill whistles of the locomotives on
the X. I and T. railroad as they
approach the depot? People who
live in that vicinity find it imposs
ible to sleep in the morning, and
sick folks are driven alwost crazy
by it. It would seem that there
are no rights in this country that
a bloated railroad corporation feels
bound to respect.—Coon Ranger, |
One of our most valuable citis
zens had a narrow escape from be
ing run over by the morning exs
i press on the Snap-em-up line yes
terday, owing to the fai.ure of the
engineer to blow his whistle, If
our authorities do their duty they
will have that engineer hauled up
and fined.— Sag City Sentinel.
Wonder where the General Tick
et Agent of that combination of
twin streaks of rust and right of
way, called the “Great Cewsar
Route,” got his title ot *‘Colonel.”
He was in Canada during the war,
and no one thought of calling him
lunythiug but “Zecke” until " got
|a"position as ticket agent. Zeke
