Mt apdMrs Bowser.
: By Mrs Bows:r
-« < From Detroit Free Press ]
Some weeks ago I refered to Mr.
Bowser's liberality in the matter of
pin movey. He began in the most
liberal manner, but ended with the
declaration:
*See here, Mrs. Bowser, this is
all nonsense! We are ome. What
belongs to me belongs to you.
This giving you a_certain sum of
money every week makes it appear
ne if you were & servant. Wheul
you want money take it out of my |
wallet. If you can’t find the wal-!
let, just mention the sum you
want.’ !
‘But, Mr. Bowser, I—’
- ‘No buts about it? You were
guing to say you hated to be oblig
ed to ask me for money—Tl, your
own husband! When a wife gets
a 8 sensitive as that she should be
obliged to go barefooted for three
months in winter!’
I let the matter drop for a few
days, but one day when I wanted
a dollar te buy some notiors [ weut
to Mr. Bowser’s coat, which was
hanging on the ball tree for the
mometit, and tookout the family
wallet. No, I didn't, either. It
waen't there. T decided to wait
awhile, and that night, when Mr.
Bowser was sound asleep and blows
ing his fog horn, I got up to look
for his wallet. It ecouldn’t be
tound.” ‘Al} the money he had
about him was one poor, old lone
some pickel. I was wandering
whether half of that belonged to.
me or -not, when the fog horn
ceased to toot and Mr. Bowser rose
up in bed and shouted:
‘What in_the blankety blazes
are you doing with my clothes?
‘I wanted the family wallet!’
‘Ob! you did! You get up at
midoight to rob your husband, do
you?” \
‘But half the money is mine.’
‘Mrs. Bowser, you drop that
coat and jump into ‘this bed as
quick as Heaven will let you, and
it I ever vateh you trying to rob
me again I'll apply for a divorce
within an hour!’
When he thought I was asleep
he slipped out of bed and took the
wallet, from - under the dresser,
where he had caretully hidden it,
and inspected the contents to see
if anything was gone I had firm
ly made up my mind never to ask
bim for & eent, but next day he
seemed-so good-natured that I ven
tured to say:
“There are several little things I
badly need, and as lam going
down towa this aflernoon I'd bet
ter buy them.’
“Certainly my love. Willa five
do?
‘Oh, yes!
‘All right—here it is, It fi"c‘
't enough, take ten.’
I took five, and I was just mak
ingout a list of articles which
I proposed to buy, when Vr. Bow- |
ser came in with a bill in hishand,
‘Here’s the shade-tree man after
his pay,” You may give me that
five and I'll give you three silver
dollars,*
An hour later he sentup a dol«
lar’s worth of strawberries, accom
panied by a note, asking me to pay
for them, and so I got down town
with ouly two dollars in my pock~
ot. I'made them go as far as poss
sible, and was rather proud of my
purchases when I got home. I had
them spread out ov the table in the
sitting=room when Mr. Bowser
came rushing in with: i
‘Say! that colored man is through
cleaning up the alley, and 1 can’t
make change with him. Haven’t
you got a dollar and a half of that
money?
‘Why, no!"
‘Nor & dollar”
‘I haven't a peuny left.’ |
‘What! Squandered every cent |
of that money! That's just as T ex- I
pected! I was told when I married |
you that I'd bring up in the poor |
house ivside of ten years, and I
begin to belicve it was a true pres I
dietion!’ |
*But,- Mr. Bowser, you only
gave me two dol— |
He was gone before I had finish
ed the sentence, and during all
the evening he hadn’t 2 word to
my. 4 thwk he felt conscience -
stricken, however, for next day he

What I object to is thewway these

,’ They take every advantage of your

‘But have I been cheated?”
- ‘Have you! Whatdid you ever
buy that you were not cheated?
Mrs- Bowser, you are no more fit

in second mourning calico, the
fifth and last in satin, which
was as stiff as a Braossels carpet.”

‘Oh! Mr. Bowser, you—you—’ |
‘And here’s three green table
clothes and two dozen red nankins
to match, and—what ails you
now!’
‘N—nothing’
‘Didn’t T get enough!’
‘But we cant use these things
not a single article!’
He looked at me in a wild-eyed
way for halt a minute, and then
sailed the green tableclothes and
red napkins threugh the air into
the parlor and said:
‘That's the last time you can
make a fool of me! Don't never
ask me to do any more trading for
you while we live together, for I
wouldn’t do it tosave your neck!
I've saved at least five dollars over
what you could have done, and yet
you find fault and show your in

A TECHNICAL POINT.
The Way in Which a Witness
Floored a Lawyer.,
Nashville American.]
‘Lawyers and witnesses, as a gen
eral thing, use all their tact in en
deavoring to cet the best ot each
other during the course of an ex
amination,” remarked a well-knewn
lawyer in the hearing of a reporter
at the court house this morning,
‘but one of the most laughable ins
cidents that I can remember oc
curred in an East Tennessee coun—
ty a good many years ago. A de
cidly sensational breach of prom
ise case was being heard, and sev
eral of the *big guns’ in the legal
army had been employed on both
sides, among the number.a youth
ful barrister from Knoxville, who
was then fresh from college, but
has since attained distiction as a
jurist.
“The little town of L—— was in
a state of feverish exeitement; the
court house was packed, and a bit
ter feeling existed beiween the
opposing factiens. The cross-ex
aminations were trying the ingen—
unity of the counsel on both sides,
and very often Judge H- | who
was on the bench, would have to
~come to the rescue of either the
-excited witness or the baffled in
- terrogator.
- ‘Reuben Barnes was put upon
the stand by the prosecution, he
had been employed as a farm hand
by the complainant’s father during
the time the alledged courtship
was in progress, and of course was
suppoged to have observed many
things that would have a bearing
on the case. He proved to be in
corrigible, and was frequently
tureatened with the jnil unless he
answered questions. The young
lawyer whom I’ meutioned was
-conducting the cross-examivation,
“and a squabble ensued between the
‘attomeys as to the admission of
certain - questivns. Darnes got
' mixed up in it, and when the
attorney veked him a question that
E he did not understand he asked tor
an explanation before answering.
| ‘Mr. Barnes,’ replied the at
torney, who wus getting very ans
_&ry, ‘that is a technical point in
law that you need know nothing

A strike on the ore docks of the

Cleveland, Oliio, recently. About
a month ago, the men who load ore

two dollars a duy. an advance of
25 cents. Since then their places
have been filled by eolored men
from the South, and foreigners
brought from Chicago. For a
fortnight the workinen have been
given police protection, as the
strikers, who are Irish have threat

and started to do it recently, The
police ealled for assistance and the
