The Wrecked ‘‘Cannon Ball.”
On last Friday morning the
‘“‘cannon ball® train, bound for
Montgomery, ran off the track just
beyond the 100 mile post, at the
Breedlove crossing,
It ran offabout three o’clock and
no help could be obtained until af
ter day light. As soon as the op
erator ot Dawson could get the
other offices he telegraphed for the
construction trains and for new
trucks to be shipped out from Ma
con, These trains arrived at the
wreck about 10 o’clock. The front
box had only the two rear trucks
off the rail and while the construcs
tion trains was enroute to the wreck
Mr. Charlie Clark, with the sec—
tion men, put them back in posi
tion and conductor Thomas
Graves? according to orders from
headquarters, went on to Cuthbert
with any passengers that desired
to leave. The other two coaches
were badly damaged, the sleeper
having ail of its running gear bro
ken and careening over in the ditch
at an angle® of 45 degrees. There
were about 75 men at work but
the wreck was not removed until
about 7 o'clock in the evening,
Eight or ten passengers were on
board and not a single one ot them
received the slightest injury, bow
ever if the train had not been on
schedule time there is no teliing
what would have been the results
of the wreck. The cause of the
run off was on aceount ¢ a difi
cint rail, #hich was perhaps moved
from its position by the East bound |
cannon ball train. The South
western road, we think, has good
steel rails on nearly all the line ex~
cept from Dawson to Cuthbert,
and it is to be hoped that Mr., Als
exander will soon give us good
rails here. It is dangerous to ride
on such a tiack at night at the
rate of forty miles per hour and
itisa great wonder that we do not
have more accidents.

Sheriff Marshall caught Sam
Carter, last week, who had escap=~
ed from Stevens' pottery. Sum
went from this county a few
months ago and his term would
have expired in another month.
Now, however, he will have to
make a new start and serve the
time over again, When Sam left
here we remarked that he was the
laziest negro in the county and
working in the pottery would per
hapsdo him good. His running
away just before his time had ex
pired. goes to prove the truth of
the assertion.

Mr. Eprror: —The time has
arrived when every man must
look to his own interest while deal
ing with his fellow man. The
time was when men, in buying
goods, could afford to call for what
they wanted pay for it without
ever asking the price of the goods.
Now, however, the times have
,changed and men are not able to .
aflord this extravizant manner of
trading. The shortness of the cot
ton crop, the low. prices and the
caterpillars all combine against the
farmers of this country and make
them put on their thinking caps to
make both ends meet. They are
not such reckless buyers, but are
learning to look around and find
out where the most goods for the
least money can be ebtained,
When they find such a merchan
tile house they always flock there
to buy their goods. ~Perhaps there
are many business houses in Daws
son that are all O. K, and deal
fairly and squarely with their cus
tomers, but I am perfectly certain
that there is one who always keeps
as fine a supply of Family and
Faney Groceries as any one” could
desire, whose Flour, Sugar and
Coffee is of the best qualitics, and
the prices lowest. \({’hose stock of
