BEAUTIES IN THE WATER.
Is Bathing Unbecoming? Familis
arities That Would Not Be
Tolerated on Land.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox in Indianap
olis News.]
SueLTER IsLavp, Hzienrs, N,
Y., August 18.—Fashion has de
ereed that ocean bathing is no lon- ‘
ger ‘the thina’ to do. Yet s
healthtnl and invizorating a (‘us~|
tora will be long in wholly (])’i:‘f_"
out. 1
Here at Shelter Island, \\horv‘
two hundred cottages and two
large hotels people this little parar ‘
dise with at least eight 1 undred |
sonls during the ‘season,” the beach
is well crowded with merry bath«
ers every forenoon. |
Bitting in the pavilion and
watching them sport in the briny |
wave, I could not help wondering
why Mrs. Grundy: whe is so pe |
culiarly critieal in some things, |
should-have =0 long ignored the
vulgarities of the ocean bath.
Here men and women, young girls |
and vouths halt nude, and with
the covered portions of their hodies |
plainly outlined by their clinging
wet robes. mix and mingle and in-%
dulge in familiarities which would |
not be tolerated on land, '
A pretty young lady swam from
the beach to the diving pavfli(m'
yesterday. Then she clambered up
on the pavilion with ten or twelve
others of hoth sexes. Here in fu'l
sight of all the spectators on tl:e!
shore and a’l her companiong, she
lifted her short skirts a trifle and |
adjusted the eclastic of her long,
stockine, which had become loos- |
ened with the effort of swimming. |
She did this with the utmost non- |
ckalance: yet just emagine the sen-\
sation it would cause if she should !
perform the same harmless little |
toilet act on the varanda, in press l
ence of the same audience! She |
would hecut dend by every wos|
man, and quite likely requested to |
leave the hetel. Yet T doubt it
anyone besides myself noticed or|
commented on the little perfnr-}
mance—it is such an every-day oes|
carence. Ido not with to soemi
hypercritical, and I belive T have |
never heen called over-particular '
or prudish, hut T can't help wone|
dering why the same act is deem- |
ed proper in one place and vulgar |
in another. ’
Only last week I heard a young |
miss declaring she would not dance |
with any man unless he was a rela- |
tiveor a very dear "friend ‘I ‘
don’t like and won’t tolerate any 1
man in such close proximity to me,
unless he iz a relative,’ she said. ‘
Yesterday I saw her swim to the
ghore with a male escort who i& not !
a relative, and it seemed to me the
situation held a good deal more of
unpleasant familiarity than any }
waltz ever contained. She =at
down in the sand, and her escort
Jeaned on his elbow, close beside
her. He wore a single very thin
garment, which exposed his braw:
ny arms and bony neck and un-
Jovely ankles and feet. The single
garment hung close to his body
and displayed his entire anatomy
with unblushing distinetness. Her
own pretty arms were bare to the
shoulders, and as <he sat curled up
in the sand, one could gain a very
pleasing outline of her graceful
limbs and rounded shape. But
again Ifell to making compari
sons.
‘Suppose,* I said, mentally, ‘that
young lady ghould meet that ymmg]
gentleman in the halls of the Lotel |
arrayed precisely as he is now—
ghe would run screaming in her
room, indignant and alarmed Ii
be should approach her in that at
tire on the lawn and attempt to sit ‘
down beside her, she would call a
policeman to arrest Lim. Queer,
fen't it?*
Some of the young ladies who
have heard that bathing is not as
fashionable as it used to be—un
willing to be independent, yet
mwore unwilling to abandon the de
“.ht of a daily swim—choose an
afterncon hour when other people
are napping, and paddle about in
pretty costumes with no male spec
tators, or at least only an acciden-
tal one.
These were the young hulie;‘
who declared they would not be
intvoduced to or dance with any
strangers at the bop given in hon
or of yachting club recenily.
This led a happily-married mas
tron to discuss the propricties with
we. :
« like to see girls prudent,’ she
said, ‘but it seems to me young
people do not have quite as good
times as they used to at these re
sorts, No matter how well recoms
mended a young man may be,
some of these very particular girls
declare they will not dance with
any one save a very intimate
frienc..’
It is commendable, no doubt—
and yet,’ she added, with aa arch
laugh—*‘why, T shouldu't have
been John's wife to-day if I had
been so careful. I danced with
him the first night I met him, and
we found we kept step so nicely we
coucluded to glide through hfe tos
cether. lam sure young folks
had a better time in those years
than they do now, and T really,
don’t think any more misfortunes
befell them than in these conven
tional days.’ |
Last evenina the children were
dauncing, and I overheard an amus
ing conversation between a trio at
the parlor door. A tiny young
gallant in long stockings was beg
ging two smaller belles—not over
ten years of age—to let him intro
duce a friend of his—a ninesyears
old boy, who had arrived that day
with his parents,
‘Oh, but we couldn’t think of
dancivg with him,” said the two
haughty young misses. ‘We don’t
—we don’t krow him at all, you
see!” |
‘Oh pshaw, now—l say cnme——-!
let's make up a set and have a good
time,” pleaded the boy. ‘He’s a ‘
good dancer and he wants to get
acquainted, yvou know. Let me
introduce him.'
‘Well—but rcally we can not
dance with such a stranger,” the
girls insisted, and T went t) my
room to ponder over the wonderful
prudence and decorum of the
growing generation, ‘
The Right Kind of Religion.
I 1 it be in order, we suggest that
all turn about and begin to tell ot
the good qualitics of their neigh
bors and say nothing of their vices,
It is becoming common to hear
brethren in the church and natural
brothers abuse one another. and
they go so far as to criticise the
conduet and impugn the motives
of the pastors of their churches,
Some men seem averse to giv ng
praise fo any human being,” how
ever worthy. They are not at
tracted by their good qualities, but
anxiously wateh an opportunity to
announce any misdeeds, however
trivial, Men feel better when
they consider the better nature of
their fellow beings and strive to
encourage them in their noble
decds. God will not fit up seper
ate pews for these discordavt breth
ren in the church when they go to
| heaven; and we should think it an
odd sight to sce two brothers strik
ing hands around the““Great White
’ Throne,” who, in this, tenement of
clay, were not companionable,
Let’s look at the good qualities of
\ others until we quit our own bad
| habits.

My lover came down to the gar

to me—(O, well I remember, the
hour was late, and we stood by the

up in his arms so strong and his

His voice was as soft asa golden l

with heroie fire that was grand for
a maid to see. And what were
the words that my lover gaid, as
we stood by the gate a'one? O,
how gently he lifted my drcoping
head, as he said in his manly tone -
(0, I seem to stand by the gate

while the nighintgale murmured its
happy moon! And the glad, glad
thoughts that came to my breast,
“as he whispered these words to me!
The sun was hid in the golden
west, low in the flowing sea!) And
my lover sighed less his words
should meet a soil and cruel re
buff as he eried in a voice that
was strangely sweet, “Well. say,
is this hot enough?”
