in bad order and wanting to know
when the street foree is at work.
We would say that the stroets hands
under the supervision of Mr. N

over the city will prove. They
are now, when they have the time
to spare, removing bridges and
putting in sewer piping. This

| COLLEGE DOTS.
The ““Alpha,” is one of the litera
ry societies of the the South Geor
gia Male & Female College, which
‘holds its meetings once a week,
under the presidency of Prof.
Bond, and whose exercises consist
of debates, declamations, criticisims
and compositions. This Society,
believing that it is of sufficient im
portance to claim the attention ot
the public to its doinzs, and hop
ing by pablishel reports thereof to
enlist a deeper interest in the In
stitution of which we think that it
is by no means the least factor,
has appointed the undersigned res
porter to our city press. In the
discharge of th's duty, the follows
ing brief veport of the proceadings
of the last moeting is presente 1,
with the hope of making future re
ports more interesting, :
Ou Friday last. after the pupils
of the Colleze had heard a very in
tertaining and instruetive talk, by
Rev. Charles Davis.on his obserya
tions and experiences in India,
Chira and Japan, and on the sea,
as a sailor for many vears, the
president, drawn by a mera potent
attraction than onr juvenile per
formances promised, announced
that the Society would not hold
its regular meeting that afterndon,
and yielding to the spell that
byund him, set off at a rapid pace
for —his—boarding house.
The membors of the Society,
however, believing that they had
ampla time tor their ?ncetiz)f:, and
unwilling te despense with it, as
sombled in their hall and went
through with the order.of exercises,
lpre.—-ilhfl over by the viee Prosi
lid:‘nt. The question for dabate
was, “Rosolved that Alahama rath
cor than Georzia shonld be called
the Empire State of the South.”
‘ Atter a lengthy, interestinz and
’n:-;f\-m::t?vo dehate, in - which both
sides were well snstained, the de
cision was given ia the nezative,
and Alabama was remandad to her
proper rank, The participants in
the literary exercises being all ab
sent except W J Stevens, he gave
te Suciety avery amusing r ading
from the “Alpha Centrefire.” On
toe eall for miscellaneous businese,

meeting ad:ourned.
