A GOOD WAR STORY ‘
Ttimere American. 1
At the battle of Missionary Ridge
sout 2o'elock in the afternoon,
ien, Bragg and his staff occupied
a central position on the ridge.
The group was excited and nervous
the very horses sceming to partake
of the spirit. ot the riders. Pat
Cleburne, on the light had been
pegging away at the Union army
all day long, gallantly repelling
every attack made on his line
Bragg had needlessfy weakened his
centre by sending reinforcements
to Cleburne, and had still further
mininized the strength of what
he had left by imprudently deploy
ing them above and below the hill
insead of concentrating his men at
the top.
An immense mass of Union
troops had gathered behind the lit
tle strip of woods in front of
Bragg's position and ths nervous
pess and excitement of the Con
ederate General and his stal was
fdoubtless oceasioned by fears as to
the direction they would take, now
that it was too late to rectify their
lines. Maj. Blank of Gen. Braggs
staff was in an exiremely happy
mood having taken a little more
to drink than' was necessary or ads
visable and his hilarity somewhat
shocked the nervs of those who did
not have access to his means of
supply. To quiet him and get rid
of him at the same time Gen,
Bivgg directed him to take a
couple ot couriersand go to a posi
tion on the ridge. where there was
a rude breastwork of logs and re
connoitre.
Maj. Blank called two of the
General’s body-guard aad rede to
point designated, and up to which
the outer line of the Union skir
mishiers had penetrated. “Dis~
mount, couriers, and advance as
skirmishers,” said Maj. Blank. The
couriers obeyed and concealed
themselves behind the Ings. One
of them saw a skirmisher on the
other side, and beckoned him to
come over. Thinking that the
courier was his officer he did so,
and was captured, ‘‘That's right,
courier; call another one over,“
said Maj. Blank, at the same time
requestioning the prisoner, Mars
vellous as it may seem, the courier
practiced the ruse a second time
with success,
Maj. Blank said to the courier:
““Take these prisoners to Geaeral
Bragg; tell him I have met the
advance of Gen. Van Cle* ¢'s corps,
and checked it. Go to Gen Breck~
inridge and tell him to send me
ten men with long-range guns, and
ll whip the whole d..d army.”
The courier was glad to get away
from such a fire-eating officer, but
be never got to Gen. Bragg. The
men massed behind the piece of
woods opened out in the meantim-,
just a 8 a gerson would unfold h's
arma, and, with a wild rush, made
for the ridge, sweeping the centre
as completely as though a terrible
tornado had struck it. The courier
dropped Hi¢ prisoners and made for
the cordurey road across the Chick
amauga, while Maj. Blank turned
up in a demoralized condition some
days afterthe battle.
FEAGIN'S FARMING.
Two Bales to the Acre on Sandy
Tand Home-made Fertilizers,
Macon, Ga, Novemder 15 w—
[Bpecial. ]-To day Mr. Henry
Peagin, of Husten county
was ia the city, and a Constitution
reporter had a short talk with him.
“How’s that big cotton patch of
ot yours?” queried the scribe.
“Well, it yielded very well I
have not got quite all out of the
field yet, but I have secured one
thousaud pounds of lint off the acre
making what is fully equivalent to
TWO HEAYY BALES
per acre.”
“How 18 your crop, generally, Mr.
Feagin? ‘Very fair. Including my
wage hands I gathered seventy bales
off the 115 acres, making about two
thirds of a bale per acre.”
" What is the character of your soil
“It issandy. What they ecall
s Yight gray soil, on which cotton
grows off very freely, as well as
other crops.”
. *Do you use guano?”
*No, Ifind it more profitable
and economical to use a compost
such as I make at home. By this
I mean cotton seed, stable ma nure
fertilizer from my cow lot, and
other things. Ifind, that on my
lands, thisis far preferable to any
manipulated guano that Ican get.”
““You fertilize heavily?” ,
* hyyes. It is no use for a
, man to try to make cotton nnless
hedeesso. On my prize aere 1
' fertilized heavily, both in the drill
and brosdeast.”

l How many of the readers of the
Southers Cultivater remember
’Helpu’t “Impending Crisis,” a
book that made not a litt'e stir in
the anbappy days that preceded
hostilitie® In this book it was
shown that the grass crop of the
; North exceeded in value the cotton
crop of the South. How long will
it be betore the grass crop of the
South exeeeds in value its cotton
crop? Netveryl ong, likely. Man
ufacturers of bay presses unite in
saying that their Southern trade
is increasing with astonishing ras
pidity. One manufacturer, who
hias been in this business for almost
thirty years, recently told me that
he bad sold six times as many
presses in Texas this year as he
sold in that State last year. The
trade in these presses is increasing
almost ag fast in other Southern
States. More hay presses are bes
ing mn,fietured in the South.
That any part of the South <hould
raise so much hay that it had a
considerable surplus for other
markets, would have seemed ime
probable twenty-five years ago;
yet the demand for presses show
that many Southern localities are |
ra‘sing more hay than is needed for
home eomsumption. |

A Careless Officer.
The usual experiments were be
ing conducted in the harbor of
Newport Rhode Island, necar the
station, and several torpedoes had
been successfully fired. The last
one was a gpare torpede, and while
this was being run out from the
boat, in which were soven or eight
| officers and men, it suddenly ex
ploded before it had been immersed
in the water. The shock was tre
mendous, startling the city and
injuring several of the sailors.
The cauge of explosion is unknown,
but it would seem that the officer in
charge of the battery must have
turned the eurrent on too soon as
the torpedo could not have exploded
I unless the battery was on.
To marry by proxy, or as it is
called, “marrying by the glove,’
is common in Holland, and is caus
ed by the fact that many of the
elligible young men after having
finished their education in the
scheols ot the fatherland depart
for Duteh India to engage in some
lucrative emterprise, or to accept
= position in the colonial service,
The scareity of marriageable white
women im that clime induces {he
would be husband to write to a
friend im Helland inclosing his
wish for & wife. The friend se
lects n willing young lady, gener
ally witha substantial dot, and
otherwise eonforming ‘closely to
the specifications of the letter. A
photograph of the favored one is
enclosed in the return epistle.
Atter the lapse of a few months a
soiled left hand glove, with 5 pow
er ot attorney, is received from the
far away bachelor, The friend in
Holland marries the selected bride
in precisely the same msmner as if
he were the actual groom, and the
young wife departs in the next In~
dian mail steamer to bring happi.
ness and prosperity to the lonely
one in the far east. A marriage
of this description is as binding s
if the bridegroom were present,and
isnever repudiated. If either par
ty to the glove marriage should die
before meeting in India, the sur
vivor would Jegally skare the prop
erly of deceased—The Interior.
A correspondent of the Piladel
phia Press says clayey lands usual
ly ccntain much more of potash
than do lighter soils and some may
not respond so liberally to an ap
plication of these salts, yet it is by
no means to be inferred thata clay
loam never lacks of this element
of fertility. This can offly be as
certained by careful and repeated
trinle. If one is to test his soils
by an application of potash to sec
whether its efects are such a< to
warrant its imcreased application,
the plant seleet should not be one
of the hoed ewops, but rather a Je
guminous or a eeral; and the trial
should be made on several parts of
the farm. Most of the root erops
require a great deal of potash. At
the North they make Irish pota
toes and beets their standard. Our
sweet potatoes require about as
much for hest success as do our
Irish potgtoess Clover and the
leguminous plantsin gencral, re
quire the presence of potash in the
gooil in much larger quantities than
do the cereals yet it is a mistake to
think that the cereals will not re
ward a potash manaving. if lack
ing in the soil, as much as any
plant; and whatever is not absorbed
of such a manure remaing for the
following erop which many be more
beneficial than a dirvect manuring.
