According 0 previous aunounce:
‘ment, the question for debate at
the last meeting of the Alpha was,
“Resdlved that the State Road
}should besold. Rather a grave
question for juniors to tackle, es
| pecially when it is reniembered
; that the legislative wisdom of the
State has had it so long under con
sideration, and se signally failed in
reaching a satisfactory conclusion
in the matter, However there
'was no timidity in approaching
the question, or hesitancy in diss
cussing it exhibited by otir youth
ful debaters. T L Jordan and W
A Jennings were to represent the
affirmative, and H C Wooten and
J A Shiclds the negative. By the
absence of M¥, Jenuings Mr. Jour
dan was left alotie to advocate the
sale of the Road,in which he relied
mainly upon the benefit it would
be to the State in elmbling her to
pay her debt. The negative was
g 0 well sustained by the advocater.
for that side, that the decision was
given against the sale. Sa this
x'gxed question its at last settled,
and the State Road must be leased
again, or else the State must re
sume its management. When the
other literary exercises were eom
pleted, an amendment to the cons
stitution was proposed, as follows,
“That hereaftor there be a debate
at every nizseting on some question,
which shall not be stated, until af.
ter the first disputant on the af
firmative has taken position on
thestaze.” This will he rather a
swere, biit very profitable test
and education of the extemporiz~
ing powers of the boys. The
anendment will be acted on at the
next rzzular’ mseting. The ques
tion for next Friday is, “Rasolved’
that the anarchy should not be al
lowed in thess United States.”
Some of thé strougest dabaters in

question, and are making careful
