The Woolfolk Trial.
After lasting nearly two weeks
the Woolfolk trial is ended. Tom
G Woolfolk, who was accused of |
murdering nine people near Ma
con was found guilty and Fentenc—\
ed to hang on the 10th of Fobm:\-]
ry, 1888, The case iz a notorious
one and hus excited much com-|
ment all over the state. While he
has been found guilty there are
many people who have kept up
with the proceedings of the trial
that do not believe him guilty of |
murdering bis father, mother, sis-!
ters and brothers. The fact is, iti
seems almost an impossibility toi
bolieve that one man could hmci
committed the erime of which Tom |
Woolfolk is charged, H(m‘evori
his having been in the house in |
which the nine people were found i
murdered, sud being the ooly one
that escaped made people settle on |
him,at the coroner’s inquest,rs t.hcl
guilty party. Popular prejurficc‘
remained aganst him. When he
was being tried and the courtl
house in Macon was erowded als
most to suffoeation, several o('§
the citizens yelled out, “hang him! |
havg him!” = Althouzh Woolfolk
may be as deep and bloody villian
as ever lived this demonstration
on the part of a few hot headed
men was hardly fairg,
Col. John T Rutherfod, Wool
folk's lawyer will, on this ground,
apply for a new trial. OF the trial
| the Albany News and Advertiser
has th's to «avs:
Judge Justin failed signally to !
discharge his duty when he omitted
to send to jail those who eried in |
the court room: “Hang him!
Hang him!Y during the eourse of
the trial of Tom Woolfolk. The
ery calculated to excite an unduc
inflaence upon the minds of the
jury,and was doubtless inteided to
couvey to their minds the state of
the public fecling atter Ruther
ford’s pathetic appeal produced
such & profound impression. The
accused should have been accorded
all thé rights and privileges the
law guarantees to the worst crimi
nal. That exciting incident {ends
to throw a suspicion upon the trial
having been a perfactly impartial
one, no wmaiu will _ gainsay. It is
imperative that crime should be
punizhed for the best interests of
society, y t is equally important
that law should hedge the accused
about with all possible protection,
aud while at the bar on trial his
legal rights should be as inviolate
as the perzgon of him who reached
the sscred inclosure of a city of
refuge in the olden times. Judge
Justin should have administered
more than a rebuke to the offend
ers. He should have sent every
one of them to juil, ifit had re
quired a posse of a thousand.
