New Beruct Caurcn,
+ In the beginning God created
the Heavers and thr earth. On
the tirst day He created light, and
tha firmament the 2nd day, .nd
that same firmament we behold to
day, as it was made thonsands and
thousands of years ago. Ou the
3rd day, He made the sca, the
earth and its fraits; on the 4th, He
made ‘the 'ights of heaven; on the
Oth day, the fish and fowl; end.on
the Gth day He made the beasts

by Him as it came out from under
the Divine hand of an alwise Crens

of them,” Did he stop here ? was
that enourh? could man go on and
carry out the will of his Creator
without some additional work?
without some law or example laid
down by him to govern and rule
our actiyns in the future, No, he
did 1 ot stop here. The Bible teach
es us that he vested on the 7th day
from all His works which he had
made, and God blessed it and
sanctified it, because that in it he
had rested from al) His work which
God created and made. God did

He rested on that day and took

Yd and sce the oreat deseeration
of God's Holy Sabbetll day; that
He has savctiied and designed that
e sholidd b 2 kept Holy by his
erestures, it is enouczh to bring
down upon our heads the wrath of
a siv-aveneing God. But I thank
his Holy uame, that there is a peo
ple, as there ever has been, a peo
ple that reverence and keep Holy
to the Lord, the Sabbath day.
My Bfethren it is an mdespensi
ble duty that we owe to God, that
we should keep one day in seven as
a_day ot Holy rest, as a day of
‘Holy work to God’s hovor, not on-
Iv because he has commande? it,
but for his gondness and merey tos
wards us, all through the journey
of life. We should not on'y keep
it Holy to the Lord, hut we should
assemble ourselves tozether and
worship in his Holy temple andin
his Holy name, We should let
that day be devoted to his sorvice
as cur Creator and our preserver,
as the great author of this holy day
as well as of our existence.
We find when we comeé on down
to Moses, that God did write, with
his own fingers, the ten command
ments on tables ot stoue, that it
was not a new law, but as old as
the world, and was a law of God
trom the beginning; bat now t
make it more impressive upon his
people, he writes it indelibly with
his own hands, that it may remuin
a law as long as time shall last, In
these commandments or laws, he
sets forth what man shall do and
what he shall pytdo. He does not
set forth the punishment in any
particular law beiug violated, but
he does say, “He that sinneth shall
| die.” The law says emphatically,
""tlmu shalt not steal,” if a man
isieals he sinneth against God, as
i well as the one stolen trom.
l The law says emphatically,“thou
i shalt not kill. Ifa man commits
| murder he sinneth and will be pur
| uished for whe offence. Now the
t law says emphatically to Remen =
t ber the Sabbath day to ke.p ic
| Holy &e. This is just as binding
{ as any other law of God and not
{ oniy binding, but He has annexed
{a pepalty thereto, wa find in
| Exodus 31-13314, these words:
] “Speak now unto the children ot
| Isruel, saying, verily my Sabbaths
rye shall keep, for it is a siin bee
| tween m& and you throughout
{ your generations; that ye may
! know that I am the Lord that doth
| fanctify you.”
“Ye shall keep the Subbath
' thererore fur it is Holy unto you;
everyone that defileth it shall sure
‘ ly be put to'to death, for whosoever
doeth any work therein, that Seul
‘s‘ha” be cut off from among Lis
people ¥ Here we have n direct
law and a direct penalty, ““ye shall
keep my Sihbaths, and whosoever
defileth it.shall be put to death, and
whosoever doeth any work therein
that soul shall bé cut off from his
people.”
Can avy command of God he
more binding upon his people? Can
God’s people continue to violate His
Holy Sabbath duy, Subbath aftér
Sabbath, and not expeet to receive
the frowns and curses ot a s
avenging God? Can you my brothe
er or my sister contivue to dese«
erete God s Holy Sabbath and then
expect his richest blessines 10 fole
low you all along through the jour
neyof'li‘e? #Howean you expect
him to ssnd you sun ‘shine and
rain and bless you with a hounti‘ui
harvest for the sustenance of yours
self and family. When nearly
every Sahbath is d secrated by you
in some unholy act of yours, that
could easily he avoided ?
My brethrou shail we continue
in this course or shall we obey the
commands ot God, and remember
the Sabbath day to keep it Holy
unto the Lord our God, who will
abundantly bless every good word
and work, Aay his commands be
obeyed,
The Ist. gveat reasen why \\‘c]
should therefore observe the Sih=
bath, is beeause Gad has set hefore
us an exaaple in the ereation ot
the Wor'd, vot only for our spirit
ual good and for his honor and
eternal ¢lory but alsy, ‘or our tem
poral good, because it is important
that mans’ body and mind should
rest fro n their labors one day in
seven. If the miad is heavily
taxed with husiness for six davs,
how important that this heavy
burden ot taxation should be re
moved for a season and the mind
alowed to rest, a~d recuperate
ready for another six days’ labor.
[t is the sime with the body, and
also the same with our beast ot
hurden that they too should be als
lowed to rest one d iy in seven, and
we therehy ast in conformity to
the gr at exanfple he has laid
down Lefor: us from the begin
mugz; and shoald be a reminder to
s that we shall shonly rest with
him from all our libors, where
p ace and joy aud happiness shall
r.im farever aad forever,
The 2ad. reason besawse God
crmmands it, Ft 1§ his rizht to
¢Hroman l a "l our (l:lt_V to ()])“y.
Yo sh Il keep my Sibbath's saith
the Lord, six davs shalt thou labor
and do all thy work but the sevs
enth is the Sahbath of the Lord
and it shali be reme übered and
kept Holy uuto Him who is the
Lord ot the Subbath, and every one
that defiteth it shall be put to
death. How closely do the people
and the laws ol the land odur
some of the other of the ten com
maadments, and how ready are
our churches to frown upon the
violatioa of ssme of them, and how
tenacious they are that the viola
tions should be severely dealt with
and that the perpetrator punighed
to the fullest extent, But the
goverament, the people and the
churches, set idly by and endors:
the whclesuale desecration of God’s
holy cay. Why so, brethren?
Why should this wholesale desa«
cration of the Sabbath day be rees
ognized by a christian government
aud a chrisiim people? Why do
ot christian people demand ot the
covernment, sucl strizgent laws in
regard to' the desecration of the
Saovbatl. as that men and monopos
lies would not dare trespass upon
them, and again, why do those
who elaim to be christians and
whose walk, (as far as we know,)
in other things, appear to be order
ly, negleet this great command of
our Lord aud Maker.
The 3ed, reason. Besause by the
continuing in sin, the heart be<
comes more hardened and Jess sub
ject to good wud pure i pressions,
A man may steal until he wi'l be
come a confirmed rozue and thiev
ing will become his second nature,
and a man may disregard tue Sub~
bath snd continue to desecrate it,
uvtit he will become so hardened
iu crime, that inevitanle déstruction
awaies him and eternal and evers
lasting despuir will be Lis doom and
he will finally 2o into the Judg
ment with the injunction, **Da
part trom me ye cursed, for I never
knew you.”
But apon the other hand, it man
hould oney this divine commani
Satoath aiter Sabbath and year
after year his heart would becore
purz and Holy, would incline un.
toGrod. would hunger ot Holy
thites and would be enriched with
the grice divine, and a crown of
righteousness would await him in
the kingdom ot eternal glory.
Now Brethren, in the end, 1
will not trouble you by reterring to
the minor offeuces, to the vislation
of Gotl's holy Sabbath, by ourselves,
our wives, our children and our
veighbors, yet these swall viola
tioas will run on and on until they
become gr.at offeuces, and are the
stepping stones that lead the youih
of the land off iuto greater vine,
A YOUNG LADY'S BONNET. 1
That Cost Sixty-Seven Dollars--How the
Money was Piled on it.
Oae of the Atlanta Washington
strect belles has a bonnet which
“hamberlin, Johnson & Co’s mil
linery department furnished at a
cost of sixty-seven dollars. Many
ladies who appear nicely dressed
can fit themselves up for a whole
season for this amount. It may be
interestine to our readers io know
how this honnet was built. Mrs.
Sarah Halroyd, the genial laij,
who has charge of the millinery
department in this house, was ask
ed what materials were used in so
expensive a boonet, ‘‘This one
roll ot ostrich feathers,” she said,
exhibiting a beautiful roll of tawn
colored feathers some two
yards long, which is attached t»
the back ot the bonnet and falls
gracefully over the shoulder of
its wearer,” alone cost $25.
It is one of the latest novelties
of the seagon, and mavy of them
are being imported to New York
and will sell rapidly for 875 and
8100. The hat itselfis of a soft
shade ot French gray and is made
of the finest quality of felt. In
shape it is low and gpuare of crown,
and has a broad brim that narrows
very perceptible at the back.
Around the edge is a double twist
ed silk cord ot the same shade, and
with the exception of the feathers
the hat has no trimminr, But the
plumes! flatly laid over the brim
are two long ostrich feathers that
meet and 'ap in the front. At the
left side 18 three tips, and
t lling down from this is the bow,
shich is about fourtcen inches
arsund., and made of eenuine
estrih curlins feathers whirled on
a string. Tais is made to frame tha
b eefand a pretry face it will irame,
too).
Miss Halroyd has also a pale
blue, a pink and other shades, ani
she eays thev. nd fair to be in
demand at £75 eseh But then
they are also manufactured in thi
country as well as ahroad
and as the duty on such
goodsis very heavy it proves cheaps
er in the end to by those which
are made by the fashionable milli
ners of New York city. I have
some very beautiful novelies in
bonnets this fall, and it may be in
teresting to know that they ean be
purchased in Atlanta for, less
money than in New York. T could
occupy hours in showing you prets
ty things which are used in decor
ating bounets this season, some of
which cost exceedingly larze prices,
but I have not the tima. Al of
these woods find a very ready sale
in Atlauta; in fact more of these
gonds are sold here tlian in any
other southern city, not even ex
cepting New Orleans.”
