The Song of the Farmér,
I saw an humble Farmer,

Along the cotton row;
His #hirt wus oid and ragged,
His punts was full of holes;

The cotton from the bolls,

To feed my pracious pets.
- Says farmer to the merchant,
You sold your goods so Ligh
You'vecansed my precious fa.nily
To stay at beme and cry,
~ Abpd uow you want wy corn sir,
And all I have to eat; i
To puy you for some dry goods,
Aud a little piece of meat,
F I'm very poor, says farmer
Can hardly live till fall,
When long comes the merchaut
To sell and tuke it all ;
I wish you'd leave me some,
plesse,
Says poor old farmer man, '
P’ll labor long and hard sir,
To pay you all 1 can.
I've waited long enough sir,
For you to pay it all,
Aud I wili wait no longer,
'l sue you sure, this fall,
My children they are hungry,
My wife is needing clothes,
The merchant’s going to sue me
And that's the way it goes.
The merchant sues tha farmer, J‘
And takes his cow and calt |
To pay him for his r.tions, i
But says it won’t pdy hal, |
Then takes his coru and fodder,
And wheat and oats and hay,
Bezause he thinks the tarmer
Is going to run away,
The merchant sued the tarmer,
And sold and took hie all ;
. Says this will do me now sir,
I'll take the rest next fali :
The sad and helpless farmer
Then heaves a heavy sigh, |
Aud sees no way to move un,
But says I'll have to try,
Then farmer to his family,
Says we are ruined ntiw,

Aud g:ts his notes und books,
Aud takes his pen and ink sir,
To sirdighten out the crooks ;
Says merchant to his pariduer;
I took all far ner had,
And left him standing grieving,
And leoking very sad.

A £2I4PLE FOR GEORGIA TO FOLLOW.
A brief dispatch in yesterday’s |
Telegraph ran as follows :
*“The Alabama House of Repre
sentatives to-day passed a bill ad=
diug $lBO,OOO to the public sehool l
fund. Tt hasalteady passed a joint
resolution proposing a constitution- '
al amendment allowing = specinll
local tax of 50 ceuts on che $4OO
for school purposes,” ’
This shows that in Alabama the
prublic conscience 18 being arcused |
o the ftate’s duty toward her chil
dren, and public intcrest in the
state’s tature prosperity What
has been done is not a great deal,
hut it is a step in the right direc~ |
tion, uhid is a great deal bettcr thah |
standivg stiil waiting for the Fed- |
erel government to dole out itsi
alms, i
There is no greater need for ac-i
tion in Alabumna thaa in Georgia,
There is as much iznorance here as
there, and our publie schools are as
starved and inefficient. Here as
well us there the ratio of illiteracy
is growing. While the condition
of the two states is the same, Geor
gia is ia the better position to bring
about a reformation. Her wealth
is greater, her debt less and late of
taxation lower. The sacrifices
which would be demaaded from her
tax-payers would be correspouding
ly less.
We think the people of Georgia
have no just concepti m of the real
condition of their pablic school
system, and of how far it fallsshort
of accomplishing the work for
which it was establhishe I, and they
ghould set about to acqaire knowl
edge on the subject. A geatleman
who has had greater opjortanities,
perhaps, than any eth-r i 1 the state
to learn the truth,recently express
ed the boliet that in many counties
the ratio ot illiteracy smone the
whites (excludine those taught be
ftore the war) was higher than
among the negrdes of the same
countieg,and that the disproportion
was constantly increasing. This
arises largely from the fact that
the money contributed so :iba'ly
by philauthropists at the Nort: hus
gone entirely to the education of
colored children. Th&<eeble thre:
months public sckoo®=though the
