The l)i« is Cast.
The fvcut£ul uioniintao lung cootctr
plated, and which lias been the sum an i
substance of sj much eo id neat between
poliiical contestant*, ba* at length been
rhroniehd with thugs < f the fast. It
we ire rn cossful, wc can onto mo o
claim to be a materia) part of <ur na
tion, and with assurance, trust to the
wisdom, nod honor of those aVra *i
place in power, to the tx'ont, at Last,
of human ability in txerti ing to the
interest of the whole people ; or if r n
the other haul we are pronounced a <lc
seated paWy, it matters hut little now
what might have been our cbanc 8 for
improving the time allotted to the nc
compluhmci.t cf hep s so dear tu us an
a part of the nation.
The pas* can only serve a* ti e lamp
of cxpeiience, by the light if wLicb,
our future course must be d.reeled, uud
our ship of state be manned, thiou.'h the
tempestuous storms that may assail up
on the troubled sea of pol'tica! faction.
Wo woufl insist, in case of defeat,
that discretion should mark cur future
course, aLd that we should still look to
coming eveuts, for that invisible “pillar
cf fire’’ that is to lead us through the
gloom of political night. It is time
euough to despond when there is no
pretext upon which to build a hojo for
our worthy cause, or no principle in
view whereby, in the illimi'ablo future
our former national greatness may not
be retrieved. In perusing the history
of nations, it is not unfrequec tly to he
seen, that wrong has borne in tr umph
the palm of victory, swayed the scepter
in every form of national union ; chal
lenged the right of merit with uncivil
mockiry, strained to (.fleet n disolution
ofGovernment, yet vanquished in time to
save such a hazardous r suit, and sup
plied with the weloomo reign of peace
We have looked to Democracy as the
pledge of our national existence, and
vori’y, we may continue to accept the
doetriue as the watchword of our liber
ties. The principle is the same, though
triumphed over and trampled iu dust—
if defeated tor, it is nevertheless, by
this wo a.ey.-t to conquer. Fana 1 -
icistn, woulJ like the deadly Upas, dis
till its poisonous malaria, and implant
the seed of death, to tb: u ter dis ruc
tion of tho body politic, were it not for
the antidote cf reason suitably applied
to COUU Uiavtlto baneful c,9Wo.
We must still cling to the principles
it has been our desire to advocate with
success, though the dirge of defeat mav
shortly remini us, of our miserable
condition, with its unwelcome sequence.
Error cannot thrive continually in da
fiance of truth, and though virtue may
for a time be withdrawn front the pale
of power, it is yet her ptovince to deal
out justice, when secured in herappaiu -
ed trust. Fanaticism must eventually
yield to tho more prominent sway ol
reason, and truth accompanied with the
intellectual qualifications in a nathn
like ours, must assume the dignity nat
urally its own, before our government
can reach that point of honor, which it
is the design of Democracy to effect.—
That purpose will to effected, though
it may not follow as an immediate con
sequence, for as in former ages, so it is
yet the lamentable fact iu rep rd to su
perstition and degeneracy, they are still
the most subtil ioccnsistenees that ever
employed the a't of reason in the work
of dinaolition; and in /Radicalism ve
have the twofold error to eradicate from
the minds of the simple and uowiry
Let every member who claims to be
one of the noble order rs brotherhood,
styled the Democratic party, oontiouc
the same undeviating policy, and thirst
for no other principle than such as
ii held forth in the doctrine of this
worthy pla'fortn ; and furthermore, let
your future course be marked with that
decision of character which was on a
previous occasi n expressed by a vener
able patriot, of the cast, “Sink or swim
Live or die. Survive or perish, I give
my hand and heart to this vote ”
