Communicated ) Tin* PreseiitSiatns of Dawson. Dawson, laid oft in IBStJ, numbering la»t year about twelve hundred, is a town if growing interest. Men of tal ent and enterprise, of bone and mmole in business, are oomjng among us, ii • ’vesting tbeir means and settling their families. Quirk te plan, wise to execute, and gifted with the spirit of persever ance, they will give us as good institu tions as any iD this this couutry. In the spring of of 1861, the manu facture of arms was commenced here on a largo scale. The immense buildings employed for this purpose wore after wards converted ioto a Car Factory aod Foundry by Maj. O. U Nelson, one of the ofiginal proprietors. In spite of wasteff fortunes, depreciated currency, and poli.ical failures, he is filling every department with euitablo workmen, turning out as good cars as run on our road.-, and supplying the people with evcrytbipg in his line. Books ire now open for subscriptions to build a Cottou Factory, Arguments abound to show a better location cans not be found. In the midst cf the raw material, operatives, wood for fuel &e, no transported in is necessary. Noth ing is wanting to spin and weave, to wear oir own fabricks and savo our selves frem the profits of other manu facturing establishments, but more mon ey. Thirty-five thousand dollars in ad diiim to what has b-en already sub scribed would start two thousand and five hundred spindles, fifty to seventy five looms, and about the same number of new hands. These people are close by, many of them poor from the for tunes of war, and waiting for remuner ating labor Benevolence thoo, as well as interest is involved in the question. Will not men of fioancial talent invest sufficient means to begin the work for the sake of handsome divi deuds to themselves, and generous sup port to Others ? Would it not cnhaoce the value of their property, increase gen c.r&l trade, and make every interest in tho surrounding country more flourish ing ? We have bai good schools during the yrar, conducted by able teachers, but there is now an opening here for an in stitution of higher grade. Mtoy of the people desire 8 xnething permauent, sys tematic, embracing such a curriculum o r science as the times demand. All are appiiscd of the fact that close, regular, thorough traiuing—reaching and con trilling heart, and head, and manners, is ihdispefjs Me to tho discharge of the personal ad relative duties of life. Who will see this tide in our affairs, take it ai “the flood,” and ride with ii to literary fortuoc ? Will oneofour owo citizens, or some man from a distance, build up a name tor himself, aod bliss our chil dren with tho most valuable learning. ? Health is tietter here than i* general ly supposed. Not a more salubrious spot on the same latitude so far as our knowledge extends. Many of tho peo ple in some localities have had chills and fevers, but we have bad very few eases in the limits of Our incorporation. Not so many as in other places of less pop ulation in some cf tho upper parts of the State,’nor has our mortuary list been so great. Comparatively few have died. Should not these sanitary statis tics make us feel very thankful? In view of these facts who would not feel safe in settling here any season? We are not without the means of fu ture improvement. The staple of ante helium reputation still fl mrishes in our soil, and may be seen in our mar kets everyday, with heavier yield and higher prices than we anticipated a few ago ; some money must come from tils source. Many of tbe farmer who gaye a iien on their crops for pro visions will bo able to relieve themselves front embarrassments, and do a heavier j „ ; business in cotten, or grain 3 , or fruits aootboe year. All may reasonably I loni Jnr increasing yields every year on j the new method of a'plying the best fi rtiliz ts, of graduating the area to tfc eir force cf cultivating with the ut rniQi-t ease. To lauds like ours, lyiog iu suob a general climate,- and adapted to" almost every variety of growth, there are hardly any assignable limits to their real fecuodity. Let us, then, take cour age, recuperate our energies, sow and piow in hope, and all tbe elements of mutual wealth will toll in like the streams of our own wide spread plains. - •o. - j-: t. p.
