„•-• v lobkul .IT-7 ‘ From the A*. Oubivaio.. WOttK FOIt v «*: novni. In the larger purli nos the South wheat will be sown tl * month Whilst we would not t.dvocnte v«-ry strong) the cultivation of this crop for export, (it being a very exhausting one,) we would most earnestly urge upon our readers to raise ecougjj wheat, for home consumption. As shown by the experiments in this \ inity, the past season, a small piece of land, well pre pared and manured, will produce an abundance for a family. It is useless to bow w heat upon pwr lun I—how far manuring can bo carried with profit, is not yet fully decided. We look for more light on this point from the next series of experiments, to lie made by the Athens wheat club. The great difficulty of’high manuring is the lulling down, or ‘lodging’ of the wheal. Some of the best acres grown in this vicinity last winter, were greatly dam Sgeu in this way. What manures are best, and how they should be propor tioned, are points which we hope these enterprising gentlemen wid. settle lot us. This question of proportioning the different ingredients of manures, is one which has scarcely entered the mind of the farming community, nod yet it ia hardly secondary in importance to that of manuring iiself. Other smufl grain, as rye, bailey and oats, may ■till be sown this month, though late except in the extreme South. Any time that cun be spared, from harvesting crops, preparing and send' ing them to market, should be devoted 10 general improvement ot the farm, such as fencing, hedging erecting out buildings, draining, &c. 1 his is one ol the best months for nut ing out hed.e plants. Within the Hirt-tS of our oh neivation, the Pyrac .nthus, and the McCartnv Hose, are decidedly the best plants for this purpose" at the South. When the country was new, and timber superabundant, und in the farmer's way in ug up now fields, the rail fence was a oud ins ituticn perhaps; but with e present con traction of the area cun. uted, and lit- tie cL -ring going on, vo are very strongly iDciined to think that hedges will bo found more economical and more efficient as a protection from the depredations of both man and b ast. Protection agui r.nisby no means an uuimportaot i rierati uat pres ent, and should be ken into consid eration in estimating e-relative val ues of the -rail" and nedge fence. — Hedges might > L-> Jbe u-ed to great advantage for cut -ing pastures for animals like goats which avail leuce cannot The present ia m o a good time for draiuing land. As the ground is unu sually dry, excess of water from win ter rains having disappeared through tho summer, it is easier to locate the bolder underground springs lrotn which the excess of water chiefly comes. In draining bottom lands, failure arises from not e.nking the main branch, or brand es, deep enough to allow the lateral drains sufficient tall and depth. These latter should never be less than two feet, and, if pos siWle, three. We me exceedingly uux ious to see some g od plan of under draining introduced at the South IV ill not some enterprising persons in vestigate the details of ‘•tile’’ making and establish works for mauufuctui ing them at different points? Useful Hints.— Rioh cheese feels soft under the pressure of the finger That which is very strong is neither good or healthy To keep one that is cut, tie it iu a a loth, put in a cool, dry place. It mold appears cn it, wipe it off with a dry cloth. Fiour and meal t f all kinds should be kept in a cool, dry place. To select nutmegs, prick them with a pin. If they ure good the oil will instantly spread around the puncture Keep coffee by itsell, as its odor af~ facts other articles. Keep tea in a close chest or canister. Bread and cake should be kept in a tin box or stone jar. Boft soap should be kept in a dry place in the col!-*r and should not be ÜBed until thiee c ths od. liar soap should j cut into pieces of a convenient sii", and laid wheie it will become dry.
