\(^ni(t;i:nnTAl7 From ilie So. L'uliivfltor. A Ti*it l« Mr. l>lrk*®n —A 20 A«T£ Lot ol Cotl<**« Editors Huthrrn Cultivator :—Tbe followed description of a 20 t cro lot, pinatad in eotj i n, by Mr D v id Dick son, of Hancock, will be interesting and probably instructive to many of your readpis dcvotsd to cotton culture. The lan(Tt» tolerably level and for pinr laud is pretty stiff, with a good substratum of clay ; bas been io c ultivation for GO or ■JV);years, and for the last two years planted in cotton. Mr Dickson com menced the preparation at 10 o’clock on the mining f>! y thefb, by ruoni-g a scooter furrow in the middles, and fol lowing in the rptne Ayrow with a long shovel, both going lb deep as possible, and making a furrow about b inches deep. The manure was proportioned as fol lows: Guaoo 160 lbs.; dissolved bones, 240 lbs.; s«lt 100 lbs ; laud plaster 160 lbs —thoroughly miied, and cost on the placo sl6. This quantity was ap plied to each acre, by being de posited in the bottom of the 8 inch, furrow, and covered with a long scooter, running as deep as possible ofi • icli tide—this f W i row wia Bided w ; th'»'gnni turn plow, followed by a long scooter, running in tTe bottom of the same furrow The old cotfpn stalks were then plowed up with a tong£b»,yel Tbit com pleted the preparation• The cotton planing was roromenced May 7th and finished May 10 I'. Uu'il May 2tMi", the weather was ex oessivdy wet; May 29h, light, rain ; June 20'h, light r»in; July UIJ'U to. August 4rb, showery—sufficient to make one good rain; August 29tb, heavy rain, with more or less raio every day for a week. Seven sw6ep furrows and one good hoeing completed the cultivation. The seed wei£ of the David D cKsj«f ('f Ox ford) variety, and have been twice se lected by Mr. Dickson.. The worms have eaten off the foliage and young bolls, but notwithstanding the injury by drougfit, and the ravages of the worms, the yield is fully from one to two bales per acre—the'best portion being where there was most vegetable mould. This description, Messrs Editors, with but few changes, will apply to Mr. Dick son’s entire cotton crop. Some fi< Ids are not manured quite 30 highly, (Ouffce is very much opposed to manures) but they arc all prepared and cultivated alike, aid io proportion to manure with the same wouderfal tuecers. The very gen eral imprestiou that Mr. Dick eon’s princely domains are level sand beds, is | very erroneous. He has every variety of soil, from clay to sand, and his surface is exceed ingly bi ken, and in many places very rocky. Yet his system of preparation and cultivation is applied alike to all, with the same marvellous success. — Faiiare is a word bo ignores entirely, provided he ean get Coffee to hall fol low his directions. Mr. Dickaort’e corn crop is very fine, but be hai so many cribs full of corn, made 2 or 3 years ago, that he docs uot seem to nd UX-l as in looking at a uu> ii* iJVo rn, as bed is i at a dense and of weeds on his Golds lying out at rast. To the ske jtia i. is ouly necessary to pay a fly ing visit to Mr Dickson's princely du matuß, enjoy bis prinoely hospitality, •ee the evidence of* bis wonderful suc cets, and be conv'orcd that be is really a Frince amoDg pl-uters. 1 ears, truly, BAI.TIJPMAS. .. jpjpikgvb, Ga . Oa. IS6B/. V S.—Col. S. J: Thomas, of Milledge vi’.te, requests mj. to add that be has been a cotton planter fur nearly 50 years; bas seen oottoo growing in every State, Virginia to Texas, but he never saw s*#h a Drop as Mr." Dickson soil has on hit* pdaee.
