A Worki>lio|i on the Fa mi.
There arc many persons who ap
pear to think ‘.hat a fanner's qualifica
tions should not extend beyond the
mere ability to hold a plow, wield a
scythe or cradle, manugo a mowing
machine, or direct the operations of a
power thresher This is a most per
nicious error, and one that should be
corrected Perhaps no other industri
al pursuits are so int’mately connected,
not only with every department of sci
ence, but with almost every branch of
mechanics, as agriculture It is of
course not expected that a farmer
shall boa skilled mechanic also, but
every farmer has it in his power to ac
quire sufficient practical knowledge of
several of the leading mechanical
branches to render himself, if not en
tirely, at least comparatively independ
ent of the blacksmith, machinist, etc.
The vast ineroase in number and
variety of agricultural implements, de
mands, on the part of those using
them, some knowledge at least ol the
principles involved in their construe,
tion. This is important, first, because
it enables them when purchasing to
form an approximate correct opinion
in regard to their working morits; sec
ond, it fits them to be judges as to tbo
style of workmanship, and the charac
ter of the materials; thirdly, when dif
ficulties, occur, such as the breaking
of any o T the parts, or tho disarrange
ments of others, they proceed intelli
gently in regard to the needed repairs,
or the proper adjustment of the disar
ranged parts. j
Every farm should Ifve a workshop
and tool-house—a place where the far
mer should have always on hand such
tools as are needed to keep his wag
ons, plows, harness, fences, etc., in
good repair It is not expected that
be will he able to do all his repairing,
or that his workshop will enable him
to dispense entirely with the services
of the blacksmith, the carpenter or the
saddiei, but it will certainly save bim
many a trip to tho smith and carpen
ter, when time is most precious.
It will afford him pleasant and pro
fitable occupation in wea’her that for
bids outdoor labor. It beconu-s a
etimulouß to effort on tho part of his
boys, and prompts them to so familiar
ize themselves with use of too’s, that
in tho majority of cases, they are able
to do many things which are now done
by the practical mechanic, and which
always involve greater or less expense.
The importance of such a workshop
can scarcely be over estimated.
Those who have tested their value,
(and there are many such,) could not
be prevailed upon to dispense with'it
lor any consideration. Did space per
mit, we could cite a thousand cogent
reasons in its lavor, but this is not nec
essary. It requires but a moment’s
consideration on tho part of any far
mer to satisfy himself that a workshop
supplied with the host of tools aud
enough of them, is one of tho most
profitable investments he can make.

Why I want Boys lo JLcnm
Farming.
I live when I can in the country,
though most of my sleeping and near
ly all my waking hours are given to
work which calls me to the city. My
neighbors are mainly farmers, general
ly in fair circumstnuces, whose chil
dren are fairly educated, or may be il
they will. I regret to sey that a ma
jority of them prefer not to follow their
father's vocation, but want to live by
trade, by office, or something else than
farming. And the reason, to my
mind, is clear : their education and their
whole intellectual culture lead away from
the farm. Their school-books contain
nothing calculated to make them iove
agriculture or qualify them to excel in
it; their fireside reading is not of
chemistry, geology, aud the related
sciences, but of knights and faries,
troubadours and tournaments—inshort
all things calculated to make them de
test farming as a coarse, plodding,
hum drum pursuit, fit only for invete.
rate dunces aud illiterate boors. I
protest against this as false, mislead
ing, pernicious, and demand an educa
tion and a literature which shall win
our farmers' sons to prize and honor
the calling of their fathers.
A political economist has observed
that labor, unless used at the moment
of production, is lost forever. In most
vocations, it is impos ible to produce
beyond the day’s needs. The doctor
can only cure diseases as they manifest
themselves ; the best lawyer cannot an
ticipate next year’s legal business; the
carpen'er and mason cannot build
houses except ns they are wanted.—
The farmer, on the contrary, may grow
corn or cattle, fiax, wool, or cotton in
excess of tho current demand, and
store it against the time of need. Hot
ter still: he may drain, and subsoil,
and fertilize; may plant Hees, and
graft, and prune, so as to double his
product in the future by a judicious
expenditure of effort in tho present. II
a hundred thousand additional lawyers
and doctors were let loose upon the
community, I do not feel suro that tho
net result would bo more justice or less
disea-o and doa'h, while I am quite
sure that the national wealth would not
be increased thereby; hut a hundred
thousand enlightened, efficient farmers
added to those we already have could
hardly fail to add one hundred mil
lions per annum to the property which
shull be the h ritnge of our children.
My countrymen ! let us each do his
best to increase the proportion of use
ful workers to pestilent idlers in the
community. Nay, more; let us try to
increase the proportion of producers to
exchangers or distributors of wealth.
Funces, and padlocks, and policemen,
and revenue officers may bo necc-s ities
of our present condition—l presume
them to be so; but we might have our
country so well fenooJ, aud padlocked,
and policed that we should all starve
to death. There is no shadow of dan
ger that too few will seek to live by
law, physic, trade, etc., etc., while
there is great dangor that trade and
the professions will be overcrowded,
to the neglect and detriment of produc
tive industry. Let. us fueo the foo
that menaces our position, and defeat
him if we can Greeley.
During a recitation on Natural Ilia
toiy, in one of our well known colleges,
a student in the pursuit of knowledge
concerning the habits of animals, said:
“Professor, why does a cat, while eat
ing, turn her head first one way, and
then the other?” “For the reason,”
replied the Professor, “that she can
not turn it both ways at once.”

„ TESTIMONIALS.
The Waters’Pianos are known as among
the very host.— iy. Y. Evangelist.
We 3nn speak of the merits of the Water*’
Pianos from personal knowledge as being of
the very best quality.— Christian Intel.
The Waters’ Pianos are built of the best

Advocate & Journal.
Oar friends will find at Mr. Waters’ store
the very best assortment of Pianos* Melo
deons and Ortraus to he found iu the United
Stat es.— Graham's Magazine.
MUSICAL DOINGS.—Since Mr, Waters gave
up publishing sheet music, he has devoted his
whole capital and attention to the manufacture
and sale of Pianos and Melodeons’ He has just
issued a catalogue of his new instruments, giving
anew scale of prices, which shows a marked re
duction from former rates, and his Pianos have
recently been awarded the First Premium at sev
eral Fairs. Many people of the present, day, who
are attracted, if not confused, with the flaming ad
vertisements ol rival piano houses, probably over
look the modest, manufacturer like Mr. Waters;
but we happen to know that his instruments
earned him a good reputation long before Expo
sitions and “hohors” connected therewith were
ever thought of; indeed, we have one of Mr. Wa
ters’ Pianofortes now in our residence (where it
has stood for years,) of which any manufacturer
in the world might well be proud. We have al
ways been delighted w ith it as a sweet toned and
powerful instrument, and there is no doubt of it*
durability ; more than this, some of the best ama
teur players in the city, as well as several celebra
ted pianists, have performed on the same piano,
and all pronounce it a superior and first-class in
strument. Stronger endorsement we could not
give.— Home Journal .
A specimen of the above Pianos can be
seen at my residence. W. M. Peeples,
