We hear much complaint of the cf
fuels of the cold weather, that has been
on us for the past week. On light or
sandy, hinds the cotton is so much in
jured as to cause the necessity, in
many instances to replant.
While v\e write the rain is falling
gently, just as the planter would have
it do, at this season, and the prospect
is good for a fine season.

Horrid Murder.
Capt. R. 11. Fletcher, one of our
best citizens, was waylaid six miles
from this place x on the Cuthbert road,
anil murdered, on Tuesday, the 11th
inst. It seems that the weapon used
was a shot gun, loaded with large shot,
eight of which entered his neck, killing
him instantly. One white man and
some negroes were but a few paws in
the rear of Capt Fletcher, in a wagon,
heard the gun fire, saw the Capt. fall
from his horse, and one of the negroes
saw the man who fired the gun run
ning off in the bushes.
The day before this occurrence,
Cupl. Fletcher had a difficulty with a
man by the name of John Lee, late of
NY est Florida, “almost a stranger in
this county,” which he regarded as
but a slight a flair, until informed by a
fiiind that this man Lee had borrowed
a gun and that perhaps it was‘his in
tention to attack him. Capt. F re
marked . that be did not think there
was much danger, passed on to the
placo where he was finishing a bridge
across the Nochaway creek, and with
his hands, was returning home in the
evening, when the foul deed was per
petrated. Thic man Lee went home,
told a young man he had employed,
that he had had revenge— hs had shot
the fellow, but did not know
whether or not be had killed him—
that he heard him fall from his horse,
and that he must leave the county, and
wanted to borrow all the mouey he
had. He left on foot, in the night,
about fifteen minutes before a posse of
men arrived at his house for the pur
pose of arresting him. He wa-'-closely
pursued and arrested in Randolph
county, end brought to this place.
On being arrested, the party arrest
ing him remarked “that he had killed
a very fine citizenhis reply was,
1 yes, and I would do it again under
the same circumstances.”
It is proper to say that politics had
nothing to do with this unfortunate
affair.

Special attention is called to extracts
from the Code of Georgia, as relates to
the duties of Road Commissioners
Overseers and hands subject to road
duty.
Judge Jones is determined to have
good roads and bridges, and to this end
has placed before the people the Law,
that they all may know their duty. We
feel confident that bis efforts will meet
with success. The citizens of Terrell
county only want to know their duty,
asd it is done.

Dawson—
In our wanderings occasionally
around our quiet, picturesque little
city, we see much to elevate the mind,
encourage the desponding and render
life joyous and happy. So far as so
cial relationships are concerned, we
have never known a people who mix
and mingle together with such ease
and apparent regard for every r.ncs’s
comfort. NY e have no swelled heads
nor very small ones—aristocracy cannot
flourish in this locality, and men are
always appreciated for the amount of
Irams that occupy their craniums, and
not for their fine clothes or high hats.
Next, in the catalogue of beauties
we mention the Public Square. Ir. the
midst of the business part of our town
stands the “temple of justice,” where
people go to squabble with their neigh
bors. This is surrounded with a mag
nificent, natural growth of oaks—said
by travellers to be one of the hand
somest spots in all Georgia. To make
it useful, as well as ornamental, it only
remains to be laid off in walks and
squares, aivi submitted to the taste
and fancy of our young ladies who
would soon decorate it with shrubbery
and flowers, and make it a smiling
Eden, where many a young blushing
maiden, with throbbing heart, will
modestly answer, “yes.”
The flrwer gardens ia various por-
tions of our town cannot be exceeded
in beauty. The (Jape Jessamine, the
Rose, the most lovely of all the train,
flourishes most luxuriantly, and fills
the air with their sweetness. In our
ramblings, not long since, we inad
vertently saw an object which far ex
ceeded them all. Something of an
angelic form passed before us. Her
eyes fl shed electric shocks, which
made us feel curious, while “those ar
ticles’’ which played so gracefully
around her marble shoulders im
pressed upon our mind the thought
that it was “not good for man to be
alone,” and right then and there we re
solved to quit “our foolishr.esq,” and
get —yes, bachelor as we are, get
some nice young lady to take charge
cf us in the future. We have made
no selection, but give timely notice of
our intention to get matrimonial aid
Improvements—
NY’e are pleased to fee that our wor
thy Judge of Orel n try, T. M. Jones, ia
still at work improving the public build
ings of the county. Havi g built a
house fur the Jailor, enclosed the same
with a high picket-fence, broke up and
sowed down in Lawn Grass aDd Clever,
our beautiful Court House Square, and
is now having the Court House repaired.
If the Judges purse strings are long
enough, would be glad to Lave him put
blinds to the windows of the Court
House, as nothing would ad 1 ourc to
the comfort of those attending Court,
and the cost would be but little. If
Judge Jones is sustained by our next,
Grand Jury, he will soon have our
coun'y on a good footing in every par
ticular. If the people see good bridges,
roads and public houses, aDd the poor
well cared for, they will not grumble to
pay extra taxes. Go on Judge with the
improvements, and our word fjr if, the
people will sustain you

fill IS is a remedy which has boon used by the
author in the above named diseases for Un
last ten years, with the happiest results. Kven
in those obstinate esses, in which Quinine, .4rse
nle. or Frustrate of Iron had been used in vain,
this remedy effected a cure in two or three days,
without a relapse ever occurring.
The advantages that the Anti Periodic posses
es above all remedies of this class, consist in the
fact: First.—That it invariably breaks up the fe
ver, together with the liability to return on the
7tli, Htfi. and 21st days. Second—That it does
not occasion any of the head symptoms, like those
produced by Quinine. And Third -That it can
