WORK FOR 'FIIU MONTH.
What Demosthenes is reported to
have given as the essence of oratory*
•Action / Action ! Action ! should be,
during this naonth, the watchword of the
good farmer. Ilis plans have been ma
tured, calculations made and the cam
paign now fairly opened—watchfulness,
leaving no point unguarded, celerity of
movement, that his enemies (grass and
weeds) may occupy no good positson in ,
advance of him, harmony of operations,
no field or crop worked at the expense
or injury of another—these should be
seen at every step. Truo it is, that
“Eternal vigilance” is the price of a
good crop, no less than of “liberty.” A
vigilant, aotive intellect and sound judge
ment is nil important—it makes every
“lick” tell—it never suffers the stone*
which has been rolled half way up the
hill, to get away and roll to the bottom
agaiD ; evory inch of ground gained it
holds fast, marching straight up tho
“rugged steep where Ceres’ temple
fihinc3 afar’’—if we may be allowed to
paraphrase the poet’s verse. The ex
pression “rugged steep” needs no para
phase—it is literally truo, even when
labor saving machines and all themeaDs
and appliances of a fertile intellect have
been brought into play — “by the sweat of
tby brow sbalt thou eat bread” has lost
none of its truth yet—and from “rosy
morn to dewy eve” the farmers plow
and boe must move. To this end bis
laborers and mules must be well attend
ed to; the faimer encouraged by prompt
ness, steadiness and self confidence in
she head of the firm—by seeing that
his labor is so directed as to produce pal
pable results—all promises made him
tcrvpuloutly fulfilled, opportunity given
to plow and work his little patch or gar-,
den if he has one—and last, but not
least, a judicious bestowal occasionally
of a plug of tobacco, <frc We don’t
believe that, with a great many n-grocs,
anything will ever take fully the place
of the lash as a stimulant to labor or
preventive of crime ; but with a gr at
many of them much may bo done by
little kindness—only bearing in mind
that a negro’s mennry is short, will not
generally last a wek—littlo favors of
repeated then is tho plan. The mules
also should be well fed, and bear in
mind that nothing will secure tin as
certainly as personal attention. Each
mule should have his own stall, where
unmolested be may eat the food alotted
him ; otherwise, another may rob him
and the consequent irritation and fret
ting prevent restand recuperation.
Cotton plan ing is over, corn ready
for first working ; if cultivating light,
sandy lands, or clay lands in which
there is so largo a quantity of vegetable
matter as to make it light and friable,
wo should use a sweep, harrow or culti
vator from the start—if woiking stiff
lands we should ruu around, tho first
plowing, with bull tongue.or colter, and
if the ground has been properly broken
up or has been packed by heavy rains,
WO should break out the middles with
some deep running plow. Now, before
the ground has lost its virtue from the
winter rains, may occur the last oppor
tunity we shall have to secure a deep
mellow soil to guard against the sum
mer droughts. No amount of manur
ing, no prolific soed, can do away with
the necessity of good tilth—.a deep, mel
low, well pulverized soil is indUpensi
ble to a good crop, but this should be
secured in winter or early spring, beforo
there is danger of cutting the roots.
In stiff lands deep plowing in the fall,
winter and spring, and surface culture
afterwards, insure good crops. Wo are
liable to extremes in agriculture as in
other things. At one titpe cultivation
is everything and all adopt the maxim
of Jethro Tull, that incessant plowing
and exposing the soil io the action of
the atmosphere, is all that is necessary
to develop and perpetuate its fertility—
then the pendulum swings to the other
end of the are, and manure ! manure !
becomes the watchward. Now the fact
is that both tilth and manure are obso
lutely essential. No amount of manure
upon a hard road-bed would make ecro
or cottou grow, and no amount of plow
ing produce a good crop upon a poor
sand bank. We press this point now,
becaueo we fear that some of our read
ers who have invested largely in ma
nures may fail to realize the full benefit
of them, from overlooking the irnpor
tanee of proper culture. Go over the
coin rapidly and be ready to work
cotton by the time it begins to show
well along the rows—.promptness and
steadiness win tho day — So. Cultivator.
Nails in (lie Foot.
To relieve from tho terrible effects of
running a nail in the foot of man or
horse, take peach leaves, bruise them,
#pply to the wound, confine with ban
dage, and the euro is as if by magic.
Renew the application twice a day, if
necessary, but one application generally
doss work. Doth man and horse have
in a few hours, when apparently on the
point of having the leek jaw, been cured.
A poor farmer a'ked me how t kept
my rvlows so bright. I told him when
ever l got through using them in the
fall 1 cleaned and gave them a good
coating of grease. He said the practice
“didn’t pay.” l’ervcrsed person, does
he not know that tho oil and labor cost
lew than the waste of metal by rust,
and docs.be cot remember that ray
spring ploughing is half done bef.re
his ploughs are in working order.
His hens roost in trees during tho
storms es winter and ho complains that
they lay no eggs ; his cows shiver by
the side of the fence, and he complains
that tho children cat too much butter;
he goes to the grocery with a jug in one
end of the sick and a stone in the oth
er, and he wipes his nose on bis coat
sleeve.— Hearth ifr Home.

TESTIMONIALS.
The Waters’ Pianos are known as among
the very best.—iV. Y. Evangelist.
We oan speak of the merits of the Waters*
Pianos from personal knowledge as being of
the very best quality. —Christian Intel.
The Waters’ Pianos are built of the best
and most thoroughly seasoned material.—

Our friends will Gnu at Mr. Waters’ store
the very best assortment of Pianos, Melo*
deons and Organs to he found in the United*
States. Graham's Magazine.
MUSICAL DOlNGS.—'Since Mr. Waters gave
up publishing sheet music, he haß devoted hi*
whole capital and attention to the manufacture
and sale of Pianos and Melodeons- He has just
issued a catalogue of his new Instruments, giving
anew scale of prices, which shows a marked re
duction from former rates, and hi* Pianos have
recently been awarded the First Premium at sev
eral Fairs. Many people of the present day, who
aro attracted, if not confused, with the flaming ad
vertisements ol rival piano houses, probably over
look the modest manufacturer like Mr. Waters,
but we happen to know that his instruments
earned him a good reputation long before Expo
sitions and “hohors” connected therewith were
ever thought of; indeed, we have one of Mr. Wa
ters’ Pianofortes now in our residence (where it
has stood for years,) of which any manufacturer
in the world might well be proud. We have al
ways been delighted with it as a sweet toned ana
powerful Instrument, and there is no doubt of it*
durability ; more than tliis, some of the best ama
teur players in the city, as well as several celebra
ted pianists, have performed on the same pianfy
and all pronounce it a superior and first-claw in
strument. Stronger endorsement we could not
give.—Home Journal .
A specimen of the above Pianos can be
seen at mv residence. W, M. Pkkplks,
