Prolilable Farming.
Every observing mind is fully con
vinced of the fact that the interests of
the Southern States, in an agricultural
point of view—the ground work of ev
ery other—have been seriously damag
ed by the prevailing ambition to plant
the largest number of acres. A few
years back, the question asked was
not, bow much do you real ze per acre,
but how many acres plained to the
horse. The consequence was a poor
ly tilled crop, sorry yield, (always
charged to the weather,) lands wash
ing away, and a general bud manage
ment for the future. A few years cul
tivation like this was sufficient to ren
der the most productive fields seeming
ly worthless, they were turned to old
field pines, briars, &c., and new clear*
ings made. Hence, in travelling
through many portions of the country
‘wornout lands' meet the eye.
Our fathers were not to blame for
this; they knew no better. '‘The days
of man’s ignorance,” it is said, “God
winked at.” What was, therefore,
pardonable in those honest pioneece, is
a very grave offense iu their descend
ants. It behooves us now to cast
about, and learn how best to reclaim
the waste places, how obtain the great
est good with the least amount of la
bor.
Our futhers believed, and so do
man) of us, yet, that the more labor
ers, the greater the amount of profit
Well, it does look reasonable, pausing
not to count the cost. Yet the great
reckoning through which our country
‘ h'as just passed, proves to the Contra
ry. The medium farmer, if we may
so term them, were out of debt, as a
general thing, and were the first men
to rally after the te’.iiblo devastation
had passed.
•Having 'train of
thought, tasome extent In a previous
article, we deem it unnecessary to en
large upon this part of tho subject
Let not the lessons of the past be un
heeded, while applying more diligently
to the present and tho future. Noth
ing can be accomplished—except, rqiq
—with our present element'of labor,
by the large farm system. Wo make
the assertion without fear of coutradic
lion. We have yet to see the
man who has worked largo bodies of
f.ecdmen together and has made it
profitable On the other hand instan
ces are numerous of profitable planting
under tne tenant and small farm sys
tem.
Let us give an instance. A few
years ago, our townsman, Dr. John B
Turner, (he will paidcn us for using
his name,) bought a poor piece of land
—so poor, as he told us, that it would
scarcely produce anything—within the
corporate limits of Sacder wille Year
year alter it has been thoroughly cul
tivated, manured, &o. For some years
back ho has been realizing annually
too full crops; sometimes wheat and
corn, and sometimes wheat and cot
ton, peas, or something else, but wheat
was ever the first crop. Dating last
week his first crop for this year was
thrashed, and the yield was neftr twen
ty-five bushels per acre. Very ordi
nary yield, says the farmer in upper
Georgia or Tennessee Perhaps it
may be to those whose lands are par
ticularly adapted to the production of
small grain, and who get hut one crop
a year. The land is now planted in
cotton, and, judging from the past, the
last crop will be worth mote than the
first How much gu.no used per
acre? Not a pound. The manure
used was raised upon tho place, with
the exception, perhaps, of a few bush
els of cotton seed. (The Doctor plann
ed no cotton last year ) All the trash
leaves and scrapings of the yard are
thrown into the horse and cow lof,
which together with the droppings,
forms a fertilizer about which there is
no deception. It is the custom of Dr.
T. to permit nothing to be lost; a rule
that should govern every one. Our
Saviour, momoriable occasion,
charged his disciples to‘ gather up the
fragments that nothing be lost.”—
Mine 6 of rich treasure are permitted
to waste at many of our doors. JBut
wo are digressing.
It > is wilbin the province of every
mau to make his premises as rich as
need be, provided be uses the means
at bis command. What Dr. Turner
has done and is doing, others can do!
by the same application and husband
ing of resources. And this profi'a
bfe farming. No hiring of hands to
cultivate a large tract of land from
which no more is realized than ought
to bo from one or tw*o It takes just
as many furrows to plow over an acre
of pear land as it doe; a rich one, as
everybody knows; and yet men persist
instrivingto follow the old ruinous prae
iice. This, however, is gradually giv
ing way, and we trust will eoon bo uu
known.
There was considerable curtailment
in the number of acres, much better
preparing ol lands aad more manuring
the present year than ever before with
in our knowledge. Yet the proper do
gree iu these matters has not been at
tained. We see men almost daily iu
eoarch of hands. ‘Cotton in the grass,’
they say, notwithstanding tho dry
weather, ‘negroes unreliable,’ &c.—
What is true of Washington is true of
Bui ko, of J.fferson, or any other coun
ty. Having been caught in the trap
ourself, we know just how it feels, and
can the more readily see the evil.—
There is do necessity for these great
draw-backs, anxieties and continual
perplexities. No man should plant
one hill of corn or cotton more than
his actual force can cultivate well, nor
than he cud thoroughly maouir.—
When we all get to doing ‘his, Ten
nes-ee and Kentucky will not get all
of Georg ; a’6 money, and we will boa
happier and better people.— Sunders

Beecher on Early Marriage.
At no period, perhaps, iu their life,
do young men need the inspiration of
virtuous love and the sympathy of a
companion in their own support. Early j
marriages are permanent moralities, I
and deferred marriages are tempta
tions to wickedness. And yet every
year it becomes more and more diffi
cult, concurrent with reigning ideas of
society, for young men to enter upon
that matiimonial state which is the
proper guard of their virtue, as well
as their courage and enterprise. Tho
battie of life is almost at the beginning.
There it is that a man needs wedlock.
But a wicked arid ridiculous public
seotiuient puts a man who is in society,
or u*it of society, for that matter, large .

of disposition and character. Tho man
that has means wherewith he can visi

not first a sweetheart! Prudence*is

Is there no prudence in taste, nor pru

Cancers WITHOUT PAIN or the USE of the'
KNIFE.
Read the following from among n thousand
voluntary testimonials to the Doctor’s skill
and success in ilie cure of Cancers, written
by Maj. T. A. Harrow, foimerly Proprietor
of the Naiional Hotel, Louisville, Ky., now

J/ktkoPolitax Uotxl, Cincinnati, O ,
April 9, 1869.
My Dear Sir: Being now satisfied that my
face is perfectly cured, I write to say so, and
to thank iou lor yo"r skillful treatment of it.
Though it has been six mouths since it healed,
I have forborne writing you because of the
common helief that cancerous diseases can
not he cured—that they can only be palliated
or covered up for u time to re appear with
more than oiiginal virulence, and I thought
that I would give my case the full benefit of
all that doubt.
I will state that in 18(13 a pimple made its
appearance on the base of my nose, near the
eye ; it continued to increase in malignity
until 1867, when I became seriously alarmed
about it. After submitting to the treatment
of Several physicians until June, 1868, with
out bene fit bu' getting worse all the time—l
went to Louisville to consult you I had be
come satisfied that a speedy cure must be ef
fected or it would soon prove fatal. Bv this
time the cancer had extended almost to the
corner of the eye, involving its nerves, and
to the top of the nose, and was rapidlv grow
ing more malignant in its character. I placed
uiyself under your treatment; and in less than
four mouths was cured and have so continued
now six months. I believe that lam indebt
ed entirely to your skill for that cure, and
-will, as a matter of duty, recommend any one
afilced with any kind of cancerous disease
to you for treatment, believing that if cure
or relief is possible you can afford it. Believe
me, veiy truly and giatcfully, Yours,
T. A. HARROW.
