eg-Oar merchants are now preparing to
leave for the North to lay in their stocks of
goods. Some have already gone, and others
will go soon.
jyThis week has certainly been oue of
the dullest of the year, especially in the dry
goods business. We could not get an item
of a runaway or a fight, except a dog fight,
which some young men got up between a
city dog and oue from the country.
Cypress Barrels —
Mr. B. H. Hood is now having made a large
jot of Cypress Barrels, and, if we may judge
by the past, be will sell all he can make.
hast season, ilr. 11. could not supply the
demand, and it will be well for those needing
barrels to come and buy at an ea-ly day.
Failing to fill his engagements, last Fall, he
has adopted the plan of furnishing those and
those only who otme and pay for ilieir bar
rels and lake them away. He will not make
engagements lor future delivery.
Fine C oltoii—
ilr. T. A. Coleman passed through our town,
Tuesday evening, on bis way to Cuthbert,
with a stalk of cotton from the field of Mr. W.
11. Turner, in this county, which, we think,
will compare favorably with the brag cotton
of .i/r. Johnson, of Eufaula. The stalk was
only lour feet high, and had 264 bolls, blooms
and forms on it. Mr. Coleman is going to
exhibit it to those who examined Mr. John
son's patch, and is satisfied that it will take
the premium.

They also inform us that they will have a lot

The Macon Telegraph of Thursday
morning last contains tho following ;
“Wo beard it stated yesterday, by a
policeman, that a most horrible and
brutal affair occurred near Station 10,
on the Central llailroad, on Friday last.
He stated that tbe poliee of this city
were endeavoring to capture one of two
negroes who bad forcibly carried to
the woods, near Station 10, two white
young ladies, and after gagging and
binding them, violated .their persons is
'he most fiendish and horrible manner.
One of tho negroes is without an arm,
whioh ho says he lost when a slave of
the father of one of the young ladies,
and in this wise : He was endeavoring
to make his escape from his master,
when tho latter shot at him and broke
bis arm, and thus necessitated its ampu
tation. The internal wretch, to gratify
bis revenge upon the father of the young
woman, and after he had brutally viola
ted her, took out his knigo and cut off
one of her arms, and g»ve as his reasons
fordoing so the facts stated to have oc
curred when he was a slave.”
“Our infoi mant staled that one of the
negroes had been arrested, and that the
other was supposed to be in this city
For the sake of humanity, we hopo the
facts of this case are exagerated, or that
that the horrible reports we bear are
groundless. If true, they surpass any
thing we havo ever heard or read in in
cient or modern history, and human in
genuity would fail in its efiorts to au
vent a just punishment for tho demons
that would perpetra'e such a crime.”

We learn lrorn persons, says the

teinrned purpose is expressed by a
large number of members of llte House
of Representatives of our Legislature
to prefer articles of impeachment
agninst Governor Bullock immediately
alter the General Assembly meets, and
that the movement is daily gaining
strength among tho members. There
are said to be many alleged grounds
ot impeachment, tho principle of which
are the spending large sums of the pub
lic money by tho Governor without'au
thority of law, the convetsion of the
Stiite’s funds to his own private use,
and the abuse of the pardoning power
It is confidently asserted that State
Treasurer Angier is prepared to fur
nish abundant and conclusive proof of
the two first charges, and as to tbe
third, abuse ol tho pardoning power,

prove where legt-liy convicted criminals

KST’One hundred years ago the now cele

were not known by that name, but their com

the same—save that there has been add' and

Even to this day these Bitters are popular as
