LETTER FROM SECRETARY LEWIS.
Macon, Ga., Aagtt.it C, 1809.
Dear Sir : la reply to you inquiries
of the 27th ult.—This : In order to be
kDOwn as auxiliary cf tho State Apri
cultural Society, your county society
mart organize with a written con-!i’u
tion, aud send the names of your officers
and members to this ; your Society will
then be entitled to seed ten d.l'gates
to two annual conventions to the State
Agricultural Society, for one fair on
the railroads, and to a copy of the trans
actions of these conventions. It is con
templated, and will doubtless be so de
termined by Exeautive, to have annual
ly two conventions of the Society, one
in February and the other at the annual
Fair. These conventions will be com
posed of members of the Society, who
become so by paying two dollars, and ol
delegates appointed as above. In the
last convention thero were ten delegates
from each Society.
To become individual members you
pay two dollars annually. This eutitles
you to a card or certificate of member
ship, which ccitifuatc entitles the hold
er to exhibit at the Annual Fair anj
number of articles aud annimals with
out charge ; to go into and out of the
grouuds and buildings at all times, with
out hindcranco or t xp'-nse ; to cucauip
on tho grounds, and to attend and par
ticipate in the meetings during the fair.
The members of the Society first, and
text the members of the County Agri
cultural Societies, will bo entitled to tho
public documents and other documents
and other books, aDd seeds now in this
office fjr distribution.
The immense gathering of strangers
here at the Fair, from all sections of the
Union, who must depend upon the hotels
of the city and tho neighboring town 15
and cities for accomodation, make it in
cumbent upon Georgians, especially up
on the farmers and planters to came
with tents and ctmp equipage and up
plies, and locate on the grounds. Fuel
will be supplied at cost. The advan
tages of this arrangement in giving the
planters superior facili ies and opportu
nities in inspecting every department of
the exhibition and for sreial intercourse
and interchange of views with those ol
hie own occupation, will fully compen
sate him for all incouvcnieuce.
I send you copies of Cranium List
aud hope you will return to this office
the name of your Society, with list ol
officers and memba-s, that they will ap
pear on the ground in good time, armed
and equiped as tho law' directs. A pre
mium of a ten dollar cup will be award
ed the club which shall appear on the
ground with the best tent and equipage
and supplies produced at home. This
cup is to bo awarded by the County
Club to the most doserving exhibitor at
the Annual County Fair.
I suggest to planters to came prepared
to purchase agricultural implements.—
Tho exhibition in this depat tment promi
seses tobe without parallel. Mr. lirinley,
of the Kentucky Plow has given mo no
tice that be will give a set of his plows
as a premium to the oxhibition of the
best bag of cotton. If you have that
bag down in Laurens you had as well
bring it along with you.
Very respectfully,
D. W. Lewis, Sec’y.

Tlic Crops—Fertilizers—'The
Kuult.
August 4 h, 1869-
Editors Chronicle Si Sentinel: In view
of the heavy outlay this year for enm
mercial featilizers and the probable use
of them heretofore, it is imperative that
all should not carefully, not only ulti
mate results, but their t Scots as the crop
progresses to maturity. All valuable
information thus obtained should be as
widely disseminated as the press will
permit, otherwise we shall be forever
groping in the dark. lam using this
year the fertilizer which another proved
last year to be unremuncrative. Early
in summer 1 cleared up an old Geld,
originally good land, which had been
lyiog out some 20 years. It was bro
ken up early, and thoroughly plowed
with the plow. About
the middle of April it was laid off, four
feet, with a sharp and long shovel; in
this furrow a long scooter was run, thus
Bubsoiling to the depth of at least twelve
inches. I then put down at least three
hundred pound of soluble Pacific guano
per acre, and upon this made to re
ceive the seed. These were rubbed in
Patap-co guano, placed in the drill and
covered in the usual way with a board.
The cotton came up quickly and a
fine stand. It was sided with a sweep,
the hoes following, leaving two stalks
at intervals of sixteen inches. Before
the hoes were over the sweeps were
again in use.
Tho second hoeing there wn but lit
tle to do, i xccpt to reduce the stand to
one s'alk t>a hill, shore has been no
utc for the hoes since, but it has been
plowed with steeps at into'vuls of a
fortnight. The seasons have been pro
pitious—no extremes of wet or dry, tbe
the bane of ottou; —rnd the prospect is
most cheering. About the 20:h of Ju
ly I observed a symptom of rus', under
the shade of aiarge oak tree, on the bor
der of the fi Id. This rapidly extended,
and is still extending over the field, ut
terly destroying the crop as it progresses.
A portion of this field n manured with
l’atapseo guano; as yet the rust i con
fined to that w here tho Pacific was a] -
plied In another field where there is
no shade and where the patapsco is used
altogether, with the exception of two
rows—one nw of solublo Pao'fio aud
one not manured—the r >w with the so
luble l'icifi: is mined with rust while
all the others are, as yet, free from it.
Up to the appearance of the rust the
Pacific, I thought, slightly in advance
cf tbe Patapsco, as to'sizi of weed. The
latter is now getting ahead aud is green
and growing, while the other is in the
dea'h struggle. 1 state only facts as
now developed, the fi jal result 1 will
supply if I live. I wish to b arn from
others whether miue is au isolated case
before I can 1 irm a judgement. 1 will
state here that the locality is elevated
and the natural dranago perfect, and
that rust is almost unknown in the vi
cinity. Can your Agricultural Editor
draw any conclu ims as to the cause of
the rust as here stated Y My own opin
ion is imply that 300 pounds of Pacific
i-i too much, unless modified with salt
or other less stimulating adjuncts.

in which so many thousand of Union

Considerably less than ten years ago,
Gen. Longslreet was at the head of a
rebel army dealing death and destruc

is the appointee of Grant to a lucrative
position in New Orleans.
Ten years ago, Ben Butler, at the
Char! ‘ston Convention, voted filty

was a poor man. Now he is the head
and front—the very quintescence of
Radicalism—and worth his million of

MPSICAL DOINGS.—Since Mr. Waters gave
up publishing sheet music, lie has devoted his
whole capital and attention to the manufacture
and sale of Pianos and Melodeons* lie has just
issued a catalogue of his new instruments, giving
anew scale of prices, which shows a marked re
duction from former rates, and his Pianos have
recently been awarded the First Premium at sev
eral Fairs. Many people of the present dfly, who
are attracted, if not confused, with the flaming ad
vertisements ol rival piano houses, probably over
look the modest, manufacturer like Mr. Waters ;
but we happen to know that his instruments
earned him a good reputation long before Expo
sitions and “kohors” connected therewith were
ewr thought of; indeed, wc have one of .Mr. Wa
ters’ Pianofortes now in our residence (where It
has stood for years,) of which any manufacturer
in the world might well be proud. We have al
ways heen delighted with It as a sweet toned and
powerful instrument, and there Is no doubt of its
durability ; more than this, some of the beat ama
teur players in the city, as well as several celebra
ted pianists, have performed on the same piano,
and all pronounce it a superior and first-class in
strument. Stronger endorsement we could not
give. —Home Journal.
