Personal—
Our worthy Ordinary, Judge Jones, hae
just returned from a visit of five or six weeks
to the mountains. His health is very much
improved, and he will at once enter upon the
active duties of his office.
jyThe revival that has been in progress
at the Methodist Church in this place, for
the past two weeks, is still going on, with
unabated interest. Several additions to the
Cbureh, several conversions, and the altar is
crowded, day and night, with mourners.
Roads and Bridges—
hear much complaint about the road,
where it crosses the stream below Judge E.

Only
Two Dollars a Tear.
For the Dawson Journal.
Mr. Editor ; The Poem which I en
close with the request that you will pub
lish it io this week’s paper, was oopied
from tho ‘‘Ghristiaa Observer,” last
year, lu reading that poem lo day, 1
could but think of some to whom those
touching lines could so aptly speak,
would they ody listen. The Gist call
is addr. s-ed to the young—the tender
olid, the lair girl, the youth, not
too young to shed penitential tears,
and not too young to seek the kind
Father who has said “they that seek
me early, shall Gud me.'’ The blossed
Savior must love with a peculiarly ten
der love, the fresh young heart, innocent
of :hn world’s evil, that seeks His love,
in the dewy morning, ere the scorching
noontide of life has withered its fairest
Idosgoms. The second call paints to
the child, whose life has bloomed iutof
wutiiaubn.,d, of manhood—whose bright j
ex stenoe has scaiee been shadowed by
oar-, or whose eye has seldom been
di in in iid by a tear. ’Tis the six b hour
TneL-rd of the vineyard stands wails
ing. Tue spirit plead*, biy alt vainly.
The youth lingers ’miu the bowers of
ease, and promises God, his noontide
hours. The years glide o’er, aud Dow
tbe third call, and the eleventh Lour
have come. The morning of life has
past—Childhood aud Youth have been
given to the world. Young lifes golden
hours bear no record of deeds done for
Jesus’ sake. Pleasures silken bands
have held the soul captive for half a
life time. Earthly joy, and earihly
love have olnimed every waking thought.
The rose colored dreams of ambitions’
hopes have lured the soul on, until the
st ill sipall voice of conscience is almost
Irowned by the syren songs of earth.
Now the shadows of life are lengthen
ing. The meridian of age has been
reached, and still we refuse to turn to
Gcd. We insult the majesty of our
Eternal Father, by declaring by our ac
tions, that we will live in sin and pleas
ure, as long as he sends the rich blood
to flow with healthful beat through our
veins—while the light of hope sparkles
in the eye, while the tint of health is
on cheek and lip, while the elastic step,
tt e erect form, all speak of iife and on
eriry. We declare that our b?st and
noblest powers must be devoted solely
to the accumulation of tvealih, and tie
pursuit of vain pleasure. In the digni
ty and grace of mature life, we give our
thoughts, our hope?, our lives to the
world, aud then think when tho sunset
of iife is glimmering around us, when
age's palsying hand has checked the
hounding pulse, when scrrow a' and Litter
r i
disappointment h ve wenued u? from the
world, wheD enfeebled intellect, and de
-eased bodies, will effectually dfbar us
from laboring in the End's vineyard,
then we vainly hope to totter to the gate
of Heaven, demanding admittaoce, look- I
ing Lack upon a life idly, vainly spent,
h w can we expect to hear “well done,’’ j
from tho L rd who called us to labor in ■
early life, and we refused to bear bis

voice.
THE THREE CALLS.—Ist call.
“Oh! slumberer rouse thee / Despise not the
truth.
Give, give thy creator the days of thy youth—
Why Blandest thou idle ? The day breaketb.
See !
The Lord of the vineyard is waiting for thee.'
REPLY
Sweetest spirit, bv thy power,
Grant me yet ano'her hour;
Earthly pleasures I would prove,
Earthly joy and earthly love—
Scarcely vet hath dawned the day,
Sweete-t spirit, wait I prav.
2nd CALL (6 i.h and 9th hon-.)
“Oh! loit-rer toose thee ! the morn wears
apace.
Then squander no longer thy moments of
grace,
But haste while there’s time—with thy mat
ter agree, -
The Lord of the vineyard stands waiting for
tbee.”
REFLT.
Gentle spirit, pr thee stay
Brightly beams the eatly day,
Let tne linger mid these bowers,
God shall have my noontide hours.
Chide me not for mv delay—
Gentle spirit, wait I p r sy
8d CALL—(llth hour.)
“Oh ! Sinner arouse thee ! thy morning has
P aß, i
Already the shadows nre lengthening fast,
Escape'for tby life! From the dark mountain
flee, . .
The Lot dos the vineyard yet wattetn .or
thee!”
REPLY.
Spirit cease thy mournful lay—
Leave me to myself I pray,
Earth hath flung Iter spell around me,
rieaeure’v silken chain hath bound me.
When the sun his path hath trod,
Spirit, then I II turn to God.
Hark! borne on the breeze is the bell's sols
emn toll,
’Tis mosrufully pealing the kDell of a soul—
Ot a aoul that despised the deep teachings ol
truth, .
A D d gave to the world the last hours of its
youth. . ,
The spirit's sweet pleadings aud strivings are
o’er; ...
The Lord of the vineyard stands waiting no
more. JESSIE.

i»SB~One hundred years ago the now cele
brated .Plantation Bittirs were as well
known in the West Indies as they are now
known in the United States. It is true they
were not known by that name, bur their com
ponents and manlier of manufacturing were
the same —>-ave has been add* and
Calhaya or Peruvian Bark, celebrated the
world over for its wonderful tonic properties.
Even to this day these Bitters are popular a?
ever and their sale and use on these Islands
is constantly increasing, and there can hard
ly a family be found, ricn Vs poor, who i
without them. We do not vish to imput.
anv wrong to the American pr. prietors o
these Bitters, but that they are the origtns
to.s we most stoutly deny, and they mus 1
take such umbrage at it as they please. A'
the same time we take this occasion to sa>
that a more valuable tonic Bitters cannot be
found in all the world. We consider them
just the thing for weak and delicate females,
and all thus* requiting a mild and gentle
stimulant.

After several hours deliberation, and
a good mauy speech 's frum the num
bers of the 4th estate, giving their views
as to the most practicable mode of ben
ch ting aud sustaining the Geoigia
P>ess, as well as enlarging its sphere of
usefulness and purifying its oharaoter
all of which were interesting but resu'-
ted in nothing practical, Ibo meeting
adjourned to meet again at S I’. M.
At 4 o’clock umier the direction of
Major Hulsey, the Press gang were
seated in carriages and driven around
the city—being afforded an opportunity
of seeing the great and rapid improve
ments going on, -t is said that there
are over a thousand houses now in course
of construction and the city has very
materially enlarged in the past few
y ars. For about two miles each way
from the centro of tie city was noticed
activity in all branches of trade, aud
the busy mechanic erecting more houses
in faot the streets were filled with the
debris of old, and the material for tbe
erection of substantial new building--.
On every side tbe utmost activity meets
the eye, and tho question continually
ati-es, as to hov? thosj people cm so im
prove. We think the secret of success
is not so much in its advantages over
other places, but in the spirit of indus
try and enterprise tnatnfedcd by the
eity authorities, od all ocoasions demand
ing it. No city is ahead of Atlanta in
this respect and many others of more
pretensions, might take a lesson from
her.
At the cooclu ion of tho ride, tbe
party were entertained at the city Hill’,
where there was a feast of sparkling
wines, <fco., as well as a “feast of reason
and a flow of soul. Under the pres
sure brought to bear by their kind hosts,
it is no wonder that the convention ac
complished so little.
They meet agaiu in Macou in No
vember.
