Tbe New York Journal of Commerce
published a conimuuication from, it says,
a gentleman of very high standing in
'California, describing the Chinese < xact
ly as they are, in overy variety of ser
vice in that State. The editor adds “he
enroot he gpeustti of desiring to revive
the slave trade, and has n > political ends
to serve, ai'.b<~ugh he is a native of New
England, one who served wi'h distin
guished credit in the late war, and is an
ardent Republican ”
[Extracts from the Letter.']
Tbe flood tide of tho Pacific scare*
breakers upon our shore with a m ire c~.
pious fullnsss than this insnrging tide
of Cbieese immigration. We have al
ready among us from sixty to eighty
thousand ' Celestials.” Every monthly
steamer of tho splendid Pacifies Mail
Steamship Company’s line brings over
from Hong Kong from one thousand to
twelve hundred reeruils sot this great
army. They are not all humble labor
ers, though of course most of rhein have
no other capital than that of their hands.
Still, there are not a few who come wi h
means to engage in trade and manufac
tures j and of late in every public civic
festival, especially on every commercial
fete-day, tbe Chinese merchants of San
Francisco have an honorable place
among our men of la r gc adventure and
sagacious enterprise.
Perhaps the greatest and most pleas
ant revolution under this new style of
“help” is in our domestic life. Almost
without exception the families who have
mado the experiment of their service
have come to regard it as a great ird
blessed rcliefin the matter of housekeep
ing. I have had this service for many
months in my home, and would not
back to tho old system of Irish service
for any price. Tho new servants arc
neat, cheerful, skillful, careful, and eco
Domical. They put on a : rs. Tney slip
u'ato for no priviligos. They enter'ain
no company. They look sharp after all ,
tho “odds and end.-.” They are sa’i.-fi- :
ed with a very humble compensation for
themselves. They make no complaint
of “largo washing-,” or “much oimpa
ny,” nr “sweeping days,” or “irregular
ities in the family/’ such as many us us
have beard for years. They take hold
of the task of each day, m matter b w
heavy, with th> same uncomplain’og
cheerfulness, and oarry them pa'i nt'y
through to their cooeumatioa with a q ii
et acquiescence which is mos* admirable.
They never “answer hack” to y mr in
structions and exhortations except with
the simple, hearty “all light,” which as
sures you that they comprehend and will
do whit ; s told them. Thff unaec mot
able leaks that in the oi l system have
drained oft so many family stores, bring
ing the tea box, tho sugar barrel, the
butter firkin and the lard pot low with
such marvelous celerity, seem strung*ly
to have ocasod. Any new service be
yond their experience, when once shown,
they achieve with an imitative dexteri
ty that makes it a pleasure to teach
them!
Os course it is not quite - fust
to communicate with them. 15 r bey
soon acquire English enough for all
practical purposes. The technicalities
of receiving when the door bell rings,
and rendering the responses of “not at
home,” or “walk in,” are easily master
ed by them. And to all the advantages
now suggested, there is scarcely a “per
contra” of discount to bo taken into the
the estimate.
Let them come, therefore, we say, no
matter in what number. iff them
spread all through the vast interior.—
Let them assume our kiichen regime
Let them occupy all fields of labor.
Somewhat slowly but surely they be
come Amcricamzed. They are eager to
learn our language. With that they
learn our ideas, our social economies,
our religion.
As citizens they are orderly, quiet
and well behaved. There is very little
call for the interference of the police in
their daily life. As laborers, however
employed, they give universal and un
qualified satisfaction. They are diligent
at their toil, quick to learn »t new tasks
faithful in observing orders, nimble, pa
tient and honest. The iron track bent
over toe Sierras is a national monument
to their skill and persistence. In every
bavest field and lruit orobard and small
garden they are preferred by those who
have tried them to all othei “hands.”—
I have left them by the week together,
without any supervision, on my fruit
. ranches, to gather, box, and send to
market, without ever having occasion to
find fault with their intelligence, iodu -
try or integrity. The vast, and growing
agricultural wealth on nur valleys and
jo our r 1 ‘ins is more and more to be 1
wrought and harvested by their labor. 1

Editoks Southern Cultivator :— ln
your Juno No appeals an nrtiole
headed “lints in Horses,” by L. J.
Thomas, llis attempt to prove that
Allen is mistaken in saying ‘Hots do
no injury to tho horse,” only goes to
prove ho is himself tho mistaken in in.
I have never seen Aden's treatise on
Domestic Animals, and know nothing
about his works ; but as to the hots i r
grubs doing no barm ordinarily to a
horse, 1 must believe him to be correct, j
I believe trie presence of bots in the '
horse entirely harm'ess, till the horse is j
taken sick with colic ; and then tho gas
i that is generated in the stomach drives j
! them from the sack they inhabit, into
, the stomach where they at once begin |
their work in trying to escape by eat
ing into the bowels I will venture to
say, n<> horse lives above tbe age ot 18
months that is free from them, and
i should an opportunity offer itsell to
i*Mr. Thomas, let him open a horse,
| that has beer, killed, tho moment tho
1 accident happens, and nine limes out
of ten, he will scarcely find a dozen
bots in the stomach ; but let him return
in two or three hours, and I will risk a
year’s subscription to the Southern
Cultivator, that he will find them by
j hundreds, and the fatter the horse, tho
! greater the number of grubs will be
found. Several examinations I made
j during the war, when horses were
: killed by the thousands, convinces mo
; that the bots do no barm so long ns
I they are not troubled by any diseese
i tbe horse may have, and so soon as
! Abey a A troubled they leave their sack
!» which can be found very easily in
‘ the stomach, if the horse is opened the
’ moment hR in killed turn upon their
work of trying to escape; and in this
: way, lead many to believe they wore
tbe cause of the animals death when
! were only trying to escape death them
! selves, Had Mr T ’s mule been killed
I by then, is it not reasonable to sups
pose that it would have been killed
long before it was, as it is quite prob
able that the ats (321 in number)
' were in the tr 1 • long before the 23rd
of April And when he say's ‘ many
horses are treated f<>r the colic when
they have the grubs,” ho signs the
' death warrant of every one of his sick
! mules, for it is generally known that
I no medicine ever drove tiie grubs from
a sick horse; and when the colic is
[cured he may rest assured the grubs
! are equally as much delighted as the
! animal; but it must be remembered that
| the moment the animal shows any signs
j of being sick, you must give it some
! thing to relieve it—(the owner to be
i the judge of the remedy.) I give
j three fourths of an ounce q! chloro •
i foirn, mixed with one pint of good
j whiskey, which has never failed at the
! beginning of the attack. Hut never
i forget, ono ounce of preventive is worth
j any quantity of cures; and regular
j feeding, when the animal is in a condi
j lion to receive bis food, giving him oc
| casionally two teaspoonsful of lime, in
i bis 100d —then a little salt, and onr<_
! every two weeks one tablespoonful sul
j phur, arid one fourth hour’s currying
and rubbing three times a day. Let
Mr. T. try my plan for a while, and he
: will soon lorget all about the grubs.

MUSICAL DOINGS.—Since Mr. Waters gave
up publishing sheet music, lie lias devoted his
whole capital and attention to the manufacture
and sale of Pianos and Melodeons* He has just
issued a catalogue of his new instruments, giving
anew scale of prices, which shows a marked re
duction from former raises, and his Pianos have
recently been awarded the First Premium at sev
eral Fairs. Many people of the present day, who
are attracted, if not confused, with the flaming ad
vertisements ol rival piauo bouses, probably over
look the modest manufacturer like Mr. Waters ;
but we happen to know that his instruments
earned him a good reputation long before Expo
sitions and “hohorß’ , connected therewith were
ever thought of; indeed, we have one of Mr. Wa
ters’ Pianofortes now in our residence (where it
lias stood for years,) of which any manufacturer
in the world might well be proud”. We have al
ways neon delighted with it as a sweet toned and
powerful instrument, and there is no doubt, of its
durability ; more than this, some of the best ama
teur players in the city, as well as several celebra
ted pianists, have performed on the same piauo,
and all pronounce it a superior and first-class in
strument. Stronger endorsement vve could not
give.— Home. Journal.
