Y'es, give me the land ; * :
Where the ruins are spread.
And the living tread light
On the hearts that are dead ;
Yes, give us the land
That is blest by the dust,
Aud bright with the deeds
Os the down-trodden just.
Fes, give me tire land
Where the battle’s red blast
Has flushed on the future
The farms of the past;
Yes, give me the land
That bath legends and lays
That tell of the memories
Os long vanished days.
Yes, give me the land
That hath atbry add song,
To tell of the strife
Ot the right with the wrong ;
Yes, give me the land
With a grave in each spot,
And nsmep in the graves
That shall not be forgot.
Yes, give me the land
Os the wreck and the tomb,
There’s grandeur iu the grave—
There’s glory iu the gloom ;
For out of the gloom
Future brightness ie born,
As after the night
Looms the sunrise Boon.
And the graves of the dead,
With the grass overgrown,
May yet from the foot stool
Os Liberty’s throne ;
And each simple wreck
In the way pa'.h at night,
Shall yet be a rock
In the temple of Right.

Slurs ou Women.
Os all the evils prevalent among
young men, we know of none more
blighting in its moral effects than to
speak slightingly of the virtue of women.
Nor io there anything in whioh young
men are so thoroughly mistaken, as the
low estimate they form of the integrity
of a omen- not oi their own mothers aud

they forget, are somebody elso’s mother

they have no more right to measure all
other women by wbat they see of these,
than they would have to estimate the

The Work lloviiu forward
Graiadly.
During the last week, says the Macon
Tdnymph, the work at the L rborhtdry
and Fair Grounds has been moving-for
ward rapidly and in grand stylo. Wo
noticed yesterday when attending tho
renting of stalls, booths, etc., that tbo
raoe track was about completed, and a
magnificent one it is, too. Near tho
centre of the raoc track and immediate
ly to the rear of the Laboratory, tbo im
mense pantheon or hippodrome is being
oontructed, and when finished it wit l
comfortably seat 8000 persons, in addi
tion to affording a platform all around
about 12 feet bigb*aad 1- wjde, ,qn
whioh fully 4000 more persons . ran
stand and view the exerefses io she pint*
on the inside, or the racing on the raeo
track without. The man who planned
this grand establishment can ca 1 and
take our hat, as he bos fully come up to
what the occasion will demand, lie is
a modest gentleman or we should call
his name—wouldn’t be surprised if it
leaked out in spite of all his efforts to
suppress it.
The work on the stalls for strok is
moving forward rapidly, and ihey aro
very neatly and comfortably constructed.
The water appliances for stock aro well
nigh completed, and as we have said be;
fore, will be ampto for all stock that may
attend for exhibition. The hands which
have lately beon at work on tho raeo
track are busy in clearing the grounds
of all obstructions around the pantheou,
in the way of hushes and undergrowth,
so as that those who stiod upon the elm
vated platform of the pantheon may sco
a horse at any point on the track.
To sum it all up, the work on tho
Fair Grounds is now moving forward
rapidly aud grandly, and wo as ,me our
readers aud the people of the* country
ihat arrangements will be com’ leted by
the time the Fair opens, that will aston*
ish the natives and challenge the'admi
ration of everybody,
In going to the Laboratory yesterday
we noticed a large force at work on the
road, just hey Olid Vinoville. They were
building a nice nnd large brick culvert,
across the road, where heretofore has
been an ugly and deop tuudhole. Thd
work of grading atid duelling was also
going on at several ether points along
.he roa- 1 , and in a short while it will bo
a very nice drive to the Laboratory.
