A liioh, and immediate ly tli.) alarm tvas given. By the time an efficient forco had arrived at the scene of desolation tho flames had so far advano and as to render tho saving of the buildings in the loy loss Block an impossibility, and efforts wore made to save tho goods alono. Beginning at Crouch's corner as many goods as possibly could oe, wero 10- movod from every house in advance of tho lire, until its progress was ar rested at. the next corner, tie-, bull ling on which was occupied by T. J. Hart as a carriago shop. The losses in merchandise excepting J. 11. Crouch, E. A. Rich, Dr. J. R Janes, Knott & Peeples, Grim & Tuck er and T. J Hart, was piincipally caused by tho removal of goods, all or nearly all being removed in ad vance of tho fire. An estimate of these losses as well us those on the opposite side of tho street, also caused by joint v a nd; cannot bo given at this wn ting. A rough estimate of losses in prop erty with amount ofiusuranco is as fol lows: Building occupied by J. II- Crouch, belonging to II Rogers, and val ued at SISOO, no insurance. Building occupied by E. A. Bich, J. 5\ ■ John son and 11. C. Peoples and belonging to E^G. Browr, Esq. valued at $3500, no insurance. Building occupied l>\ and belonging to Dr. J. lb Janes aim valued §I2OO, no insurance. Build in- occupied by and belonging to Crim & Tucker, valued at §ISOO, no insu rance. Building occupied by W. Wooten, T. J. Hart, and Loyloss & Gridin and belonging to the latter firm, valued at§2soo, insured for S2OOO. Buildings belonging to Mr. J. Hart, and occupied by him as a Car riago and Blacksmith shop, valued at §IOOO, no insurance. The large ware house, belonging to Jonos & Harper, and valued at §2OOO, no in—— Besides tho losses iu goods not yet summed up, a largo amount of Guano, Corn, Bacon, Balt, Ua»S in ß* Ac., belonging to Messrs. Gnm * Tucker, Knott & Peeples, and others, was destroyed in tho store room of the Warehouse, none of which was insured. Nor did tho damage stop l lure . Per tho street was so narrow, and so groat was tho fear that to buildings on tho oposito sale "ounl l consumed, that moio or loss of tho goods on the opposite'block were re moved and besides being subdued to pie ravages of the light finder id gentry presented a mass of Dry Goods, Grocer ies, Drugs, Hardware, Priutors lie Ac Among tho principal loseis on tho opposite side from tho fire were Messrs. Deo & Brothers, Hardware dealers, whose Iron liouso was on tho side that was burned. It is useless to speak of effoits that were made to savo the property and goods, for it is characteristic of tho people of this town, white and black, to work like Trojans at a fire. Tho greatest difficulty was tho want of eoruo one to direct movements, thus securing concert of action, and mak ing what is done more effective. And just hero wo would remark that our (itizons should organize themselves in to companies, elect officers, and be governed by them in timo of fiie, whether they liavo engines, hooks and ladders, or not. AroLooKJ'ic.r — For the first time kinco wc have been a journalist, we send out our paper with what is known among the printers as doubtlets ad vertisements that were printed on the outside also appearing on tho inside. Our excuse for this as well as for tho scarcity of reading matter is that we, like our neighbors, removed our ma terial, aud the work of getting it back into ship shape required so much tinuTas to renuht tlio'iin’iag of fire'JW per with a variety an impossibility. To Plasters. —Noth withstanding tho loss sustained by us in the burn ing of out Warehouse wo will be pre pared to receive, store, ship and sell cotton, by the 20th of September. Joxes & Habibs. Attention Stvk Holders. —Stock- holders of tho Teriojl Industrial Asso ciation are hereby lufifiod that one fourth tho amount of 6nek is called for on the loth of Sephniber, one fourth the 15th of October, j Uio remainder tho Ist of November. Quito a respectable < number of tho substantial farmers of '■ this county wore present, having loft their homes expecting to hear ascientif ic address from Col. Holder. Tho Col. made his appearance, found a good portion of our town in rshes, tho citi zens in no condition to hear a long and well prepared speech, by reason of tho fatigue and exposure of the night before, and after consultation thought best to deliver a short and practicable fpeeeli on tho subjects that directly interest us as an ngr.oul turul people, and to urge the necessity of holding Annual Fairs. The condi tion ot our office prevents us from giv ing a full synopsis of his speech, hut suffice it to say that it was well receiv ed, and replete with the best of argu ments and advice. AV o hope to be favored with tho address that the Col a,o! In and prepared at some future day, and much regret the circumstan ces which caused tho postponmout. To.-. Pair Ghounds. —Messrs. J. B. Weston, secretary. Directors —J- B. Ciim, M .A. Ilu son, James Clark, W. G. Simpson, Jas. I’. Sharp, J. R. Marshall, and M. L. Harp. Mr. Wright Blacksliear, charged with forging land deeds, and who, in default of bail, was sent to Cuthbeit jail to await his trial at tho next term of tho Court, died of congestion in that mansion on Sunday evening last. Ox tho night of tho fire an aged no gro woman who had been brave enough to venture near the flames and rescue an armful of valuable goods, was making way with them, when suddenly she thought she espied a darning noodle, and oisting down the valuables remarked, “I made slioro I seed a darnin’ needle,” and she scrap ed about in tho sand for the needle until tho five made her get further. Building Up.—Wo are pleased to loam that arrangements are being made by tho owners of tho lots made vacant by tho firo to rebuild with brick. This is a move in the right direction and wo trust that tho enter prising owners will not entertain any ideas or thoughts that would causo them to hesitate, but go to work at onco. There are builders and contractors ni reacfrrrr-UiJhat will guarantee tho completion cf tho entiro block by tho Ist of November. Cause of Fire.— We have carefully enquired iuto the probable causo of the Into lire, and from all tho circum stance brought to light, do not doubt it was tho work of au incendiary. It is a difficult matter to bring to justice tho demon who puts tho torch to a building under cover of night, but ef forts are being mado to ferret out tho pcrpetrater in this instance. IV© bold that, and it is tho opinion of somo of our best citizens, that there is somo reason to bolievo that tho effort will • not be in vain. Educational M ketino. — Our friends in the country nro earnestly requested to attend an Educational Meeting which will convene at tho Court liouso on Tuesday next at 11 o’clock. It is useless for us to speak of tho impor tance of having a full attendance, both from town and country, and take it for granted that all our people arc alivo to tho importance of education, and will merely suggest that it is the great lover that elevates society, disperses tho causes for ciimo, and fits a com munity for tho enjoyment of every blessing common to man. Let ns then, with one accord, determine to improve our educational facilities, which will not only fit this but gener ations to come to battle mure success fully with life’s troubles.
