Webster county is clamoring for a
post-office at Ilard-money. We would

conflicts very much with our interests
in that county. We suggest to our

Ur In a Balloon.— An old country
lady of tho colored persuasion made

sell cakes aud pies during tho Fair.
She was informed that in addition to
the money for license she would be re
quired to make an ascension in a bal
loon. That was something now to her,
but having her mind fully made up to
sell pies, she agreed to the proposition,
aud is no doubt heralding it far and
near of her contemplated trip in tho

Eev- E. H. McGehee, pastor, proach
ed in the Methodist church on Sab
bath last from the following text: —
“Who when he came, and had seen
the grace of God, was glad and ex
horted them all, that with purpose of
heart they would cleave unto tbo
Lord.” The forco of his argument
was that where tho grace of God ex
isted, it would manifest itself. Warned
his congregation against tho follies
and fashions of tho world, thought
that Agricultural Fairs should be en
couraged so long as they poitain to
agricultural interests, but thought the
introduction of riding for piizos, &c.
into them, was an evil, and should be
discarded.

loading his wagon in tho cotton yard

mules attached to tho wagon became
frightened and making a sudden dasli,
threw a negro out of the wagon hurt-
him badly. Mr. Moreland in his of
forts to stop tho team was thrown
against tho ground, but fortunately
was not hurt very badly. But for tho
courage of a worthy son of Ilam, oth
or damage might have been done
but he planted his eboney form in the
middle of tho road, and appearing so
much like a huge black stump, the
mules mado no attempt to run over
him. m

Dawson, Ga., Oct. 23, 1871.
A mooting was held at the Court
House this evening for the purpose of
organizing a Hook and Ltuldor Com-'
pany, for protecting tho property of
tlio citizens of Dawson. Ou motion, ■

resulted as follows:

I. 0. G. T.—On last Sabbath Eev.
W. G. Parks proachod a sterling Tem
perance Sermon at Morgan, by invita
tion of Eureka Lodge No. 38. We
learn that it was well received, and
that its good effects can be distin
guished already. We are glad to
know that the Temperance cause is
prospering iu our sister city, for wo
can remember well when the evil ef
fects of intemperance greatly affected
the moral influence that would other
wise have shed its lustro over tho
whole community. What have the
Good Templars accomplished for her ?
They have wrought such a radical
change over the place that nearly ev
ery man and woman are now shouting
the battle cry of Temperance.
In Dawson we see the good this Or
der has accomplished. Young men
who onco spent their ovonings at the
Barroom, now spend them around the
fireside, at Temperance meetings, or
in some other enlightened way; grown
up men who were pronounced con
firmed drunkards, now wear the garb
of Temperance, and everything has a
more cheerful appeararce. Our com
munity owe a great deal to Banner
Lodge, and it should be encouraged in
all its enterprises. We hope to see
the Methodist church crowded ou next
Sabbath at 11 o’clock, to hear tho
Temperance Sermon of Eov. J. K.
Armstrong. Tho Good Templars and
Cold Water Templars will be out in
procession, and show to our town such
au army as Satan can novor disband
—an army over ready to assist tho
drunkard in coming back to the paths
of morality and virtue, and to make
active workers of those who aro now
1 careless in the cause.
I Wo learn that Eev. W. G. Parks
I has boon commissioned D. G. W. C T.
j for tho state at large by the G. W. C.
TANARUS., and that he will enter upon tho du
ties of the offico at onco. Wo hope to
hear of many Lodges instituted by
him, and much good boiug accom
plished in thoso already organized.—

For the purpose of encouraging a
spirit of improved agiiculture, togeth
er with tho mechanical arts and do
mestics generally, some of tho citi
zens have instituted a Fair Associa
tion, and amid the financial embar
rassments surrounding thorn, bavo
gone forward and prepared a place
and appointed a titno when and whore
it is desired to see the industries of ev
ery class and character exhibited.—
Time, experience and history all point
to the fallacy of tho course horotofore
pursued by a majority of our people,
and the demand for systematic farm
ing* educated labor well directed, as
well as the encouragoment of tho me
chanical arts, becomes greater ami
greater witli each succeeding year.—
How these ends are to be attained, is
the great question agitating the minds
of leading men, and knowing that in
the encouragement and success of these
depends the success of every other
branch of industry, have instituted
Fair Associations here and tliero
where Mr. A., B. and C. can bring Ins
products, manufactures, or fruits of
his skill, and as a public benefactor,
make known to tho world the utility
of inventions and their modo of culti
vation, from tho preparation of tho
ground to seed time and harvest,
otc. Who that is successful in theso
various respects, that is so selfish as
to keep within his own bosom some
thing that would benefit his neighbor,
and who that would not gladly adopt
the plan of him who by skill and in
dustry would mako a given number of
acres yield twic* as much as himself.
Surely thero are none such in our
midst.
We know that a majority aro opposed
to “book farming,” and are justifiable
in a groat degreo, since it is true that
by far tlio larger portion of agricultu
ral literature is from the pens of thoso
who novor run a furrow 7 in their lives,
white the successful farmer fails to
impart his kuowlodgo to the unsuccess
ful. What then are tho benefits aris
ing from tho fairs ? Instead of read
ing from books tho different properties
composing the soil, the effects of differ
ent seasons upon the same, you see the
practical effects of educated labor di
versified and dirocted, tho adoption
and cultivation of which will elevate
and ennoble mankind. Then let the
farmers and mechanics encourage this
enterprise, and let none fail to have
something on exhibition. Let the
housew'ifo contribute thoso delicacies
made perfect by study and experience,
and ore long our good old State will
invito imigration and instead of young
mon who are raised here seeking for
eign homes they will delight to dwell
on Georgia’s soil, will be proud of
Georgia’s society, and tho hallowed
spots where rests their father’s bones
will bo more endearing than now, and
from the hovels of ignorance and waste
places that loom up in ovory direction
a knowlodgo will spring up that will
send its moralising influencos to every
hut and make the waste places blos
som as tho rose.
