alone.” Alter applying the text,
showing that it was our duty to assist
the unfortunate in regaining their for
mer position in society, he gave the
history of the different Temperance
Organizations that have ever existed
showing that none were as well organ!

much good, and none that would live

with a statistical tablo of the effects of
whiskey in t*e United States.

utive Committee.
Tho State Democratic Exocutlve
Committee assembled in this city yes
terday, and had a full and free consul
tation. Tho following resolutions were
adopted :
Resolved, That tho fruits of the
victory achieved at tho I lecember elec
tion cannot bo secured without thor
ough organization. We reiterate tiro
opinion previously expressed by this
committee that men ot character and
ability should be nominated for office,
and it should be regarded as a patri
otic duty to support and elect them,
though Individual preferences have to
be abandoned.
Resolved, That the people of Geor
gia aud this committee have an abi ling
confidence that the Democratic Legis
lature, soon to assemble, will be guided
by “Wisdom, Justice aud Moderation
that its action bo discrete, its enact
ments just, and its administration hon
est and economical. t
Resolved, That this comuriitoo be
lieve the roports of the existence of
Ku-klux or other secret political or
ganizations in this State, which have
induced Congress to take action on that
subject, are whoJ.y unfounded. That
there havo boon acts of lawlessness
and violence cannot be denied, but
they have not beer, instigated by any
partisan motivo or fe’eling. Tho ill-ad
vised use of tho pardoning power, by
which notorious criminals have been
relieved from the punishment duo to
their crimes, has in some instances ex
cited persons to acts of violence which
would not havo otherwise occurred,
and which we unhesitatingly condemn
and disapprove.^ —Macon Tel,
Chicago. —Chicago lost 20,000 buil
dings, covering 26,000 acres, and worth
$300,000. Over 50,000 persons have
left the city, leaving 180,000. Five
grain elevators with 1,600,000 bushels
of grain burned leaving eleven houses
with 5,000,000 bushels. Os lumber
50,000,000 feet were burned, leaving
240,000,000 feet. Coal, 80,000 tons
burned, loaving as much. Half of all
stocks of goods were destroyed. About
20,000 houses remain. Ten per cent
of the currency was burned.
Tho whole loss was 25 per cent of
her total assets.
