I A Fiendish Murder in Msw«n
Comity.
We learft from reliable sources that
a horrible murder uud outrage was
committed on the person of Mrs.
Chambliss, of, Stewart county, on last
Thursday night. The facts of the
case, as they have been detailed to us,
are as follows:
On the night meutioned, Mr. Cham-j
bliss discovered that hie plantation
was on fire. He sent to his neighbors
lor assistance, and h xstened to the file,
leaving his wife alone. About day
light he sent h negro boy to the house
to request his wife to prepare break
fast for the men who were assisting
him. On arriving at the house, tile
hoy found Mrs. Chambliss on the Jour
of the parlor, dead; one bt her eyes
burst*d out uud her skull terribly
crushed. The boy gave thu alarm,
and soon a large crowd of both black
and white poisons assembled.
One gentleman, on bis way to the ;
house, raw u negro sitting on a fence,
He dragged ihe negro off the fence
and, di-cov"ting blood on lug clothing,
accused him of the crime. At first,
he denied it, but, being unable to ac
count for the blood at last confessed j
the deed, and implicated *woother nr. 4
gioes as liis assistants ill the horrible
act. One of the two ottier regroes
implicated lived with Mr. Chambliss
and the other near by.
They wore immediately arrested
and they also acknowledged their
guilt, and slated that they had con
cocted the dark deed weeks before.
The agreement among them was that
th“ negro living on Mr. C’s place was
to fire it, and, while Mr. Chambliss
wan absent at the fire, the three de-'
vtls were to go to the house, — murder j
Mrs. Chambliss and then rob and
plunder. In addition ID the murder,
they confessed another nameless but
darker and mere diabolical deed.
There were about one hundred mid
fifty persons assembled on the scene,,
and when the question was asked
“What shall be done with the crimi
nals?” the negroes present, about six
ty in number, cripd out “burn fheai.”
This being objected to, a line was
struck and those in favor of hanging
onthespot requested tepassoverit. All
present of both sexes and colors cross
ed the line. A rudo gallons was con
structed and t'e three ciiminvls exe
cute! bv hanging, one ata time. The
negroes met their terrible fate with
stoical indifference.
The rope broke in attempting to
bang the first one, whereupon, he
laughed a loud ha! ha! ha! and told
his executioners that they “must do
better than dat.”
Thit» has swift justice met the per
petrators of another horrible Crime in
our seetion. •
