Hi o Killing Time --For the past

were so fortunate ns (o have shoats',
are now feasting on “hack-bone and

Svi'EKINTENDFNTS— At the last
meeting of the board of Stewards ot the
M. E. Church, at this pla e, Dr. C. R.
Moore and Col. Jas. G. Parks, were
elected Superintendents of the Metho
dist Sabbath Sch'-01, to serve during
the corning year. These gentlemen
are worthy of the high position as
signed to them, and we look for a good
work in the Sabbath School cause
during next year-
Tlit; Election.
As wo write (Wednesday 2, P. m.)
the election is progressing very quiet
ly. There being but one candidate
for the Senate and but one for the
House, there is much less than the usu
ual interest and excifeuien* m tnifested.
Ratification or no ratification, Atlan
ta or Miiiedgeville, and the old or the
new constitution are the on v is-u-s
here. Comparatively few negroes are
voting. The friends of Miiiedgeville
say that Atlanta is polling a much
larger vote than they expected. Some
of them even say that Atlanta wilt
carry the county. Should this tie the
case it will be a surprise to most peo
ple here. We believe that no white
men are voting against ratification,
and but few, if any of them, against
the new homestead. The vote ot
the county will likely he small.
We hope to be able to give the re
sult, at the Court-house at least, in
this issue.

We recommend that as soon as possible

The Superior Court.
Our Superior Court is still in ses
sion and daily crowds to
the Temple of Justice. The civil dock
et occupied the court’s attention up lo
Ihe hour of adjournment, last Satur
day eventDg, and, although not clear
ad, it was deemed excellent to an
nounce the criminal docket for 2 r, m.
on Monday.
The lo renoon of Monday was occu
pied in the installation of officers aud
jurors fur the °econd week, and at 2
o’clock p. m , the criminal docket wav
called and busiuess commenced.
It is said that most of the criminals*
in this 3ounty, are negroes and any
one looking over the calendar of Ter-1
rell Superior court will find the asser
tion true; for, although there sre a
few cases against whites, the majority
of names on the docket could be ap
propriately followed by the abbrevia
tion, “col’d”. There are nu very im
portant cases lor trial, all being of the
lower grades of crime, which indicates
a great ioipioveinent in morals over
the uneuviable reputation our coun
ty held a few years ago. It is likely
that the court will continue all the
week.

Of nil t! e tender ties that hind
My heart to any other,
The Sweetest, gentlest and most kiild
Is that which will forever hind
My heart unto my mother.
Th first of all my earthly friends,
Her love she’ll never smother;
Day by day as the years go by,
Firmer, closer is drawn the tia
That binds me to my toother.
Far back to ear!y(chiidhood’s hour,
The first of any other,
I saw a sweet, londfatixious face.
Bendiug o’sr me with angel gratr,
I knew it was my mother.
Since then I never can fi rge*,
How, more than any'ott.er,
She has been patient, gentle, kind,
Of all true fiiend# to me I find—
The host has been my motiier.
And though Ihave tomanhoud giowri,
And learned to love another,
Yet first of uil is still to me
'lire tie which binds so tenderly
My heart ‘unto my mother.
Then let in future come what will,
Ne’er to any ether
I’ll give that place within tr.y heart,
I keep sacred and apart,
To give upon my mother.
