There are some of the most ingen

saw. They can climb up into a far

walk off ami never say anything
about it. The mule after thus being
robbed of his dinner, doubtless says:
‘‘H°w Haiiy the town cow gore

Heavy Hail Storm.— We learn
that a heavy hail storm passed
through the lower portion of Terrell
and Calhoun counties, on Thursday
of last week. Mr. Doc. Melton, who
iives about three miles from town,
informs us that it was very heavy at
his house. Another gentleman, who
was at Cordray’s mill, writes that he
saw a large number of balls of hail
that were as large as common hen j
eggs. lie also states that a corn
crib and stables at or near that place
were blown down. We have heard
of no other damage. There was no 1
hail and but very little wind at Daw-1
son.
Last Sunday.— Rev. Samuel An
thony, Sunday School Agent,
preached to a large and attentive au
dience at the Methodist church, on
Sunday r morning. In the afternoon
he held a Sabbath School mass-meet
ing, which was attended by nearly
all the children in town. Interesting
speeches were made by himself, Rev.
R. W. Dixon and Dr. C. R. Moore
all of which were to the point and
well received. Uncle Sammie is in
his sixty-seventh year, and has been
preaching within the bounds of the
North and South Georgia Conferences
for forty-six years. His present work
is a comparatively new one to him,
and we trust that his efforts will be
crowned with most abundant success.
Better Times Coming. —We feel
it in our bones that we are to have
better times before long. We think
the silver bill will be passed,.the re
sumption act repealed, and the green
back currency sufficiently inflated to
make money more plentiful and more
easily gotten. But we all should
remember that to have money we
must have something to give for it.—
Let us all go to work with a vim and
*a determination to drive hard times
from our doors. That is the way to
do it. There is no use of drowning
when we are in sight of land.
Crime and Justice.
The legal fraternity and Judge J.
M. Simmons were busily engaged a
great portion of last week in holding
courts of inquiry, and examining in
to the status of several of the colored
citizemyjf our county.
Mike Wilson and Morgan May
were arrested under a warrant for
burglary, charging them with having
kroken open the store house of Mr.
R. C. Martin, at Brown Station, on
the night of the 28th of December,
last. After a lengthy investigation,
the accused were committed to jail
to answer at the next term of our
Superior Court. Messrs. Guerry &
Parks vigorously prosecuted the case
for the State, and T. H. Pickett, Esq.,
ably represented the defense.
On Saturday last, George and Tom
Knighton were arraigned before
Justice Simmons, charged with an
assault with intent to murder. These
are two of the negroes who made
the violent assault on our young
friend, Wm. R. Paschal, last month,
and which came near resulting in his
death. They had not had a prelim
inary trial earlier as Mr. Paschal was
too ill to attend court. The case was
thoroughly enquired into, and the
defendants were returned to juil to
await a final investigation before the
grand jury at the May term of Court.
The accused had able counsel in the
person of Capt. R. F. Simmons, and
Messrs. Guerry & Parks did their
whole duty for the prosecution.
We trust that by earnest elforts to
detect and punish the perpetrators
of crime, that morality may be pro
moted in our county.

Secretary’* Report to the Do
nation Society.
To the Ladies' Donation Society :
It becomes my duty to present to you to
i day the annual report of the proceedings and
progress of our Society during the year just
closed.
With grateful hearts should we lift up our
voice in praise and thanksgiving to our
Heavenly Father for His manifold goodness
in bringing us to the end of the year with
so favorable a report. While many have
been called to their final account, oar band
has remained unbroken, — the lives of al*
have been mercifully spared.
At times clouds ot disappointment and
failure may have gathered to sadden our
heart.*, often causing darknes, to brood over
oar souls, but beyond them all, the great
( bright sun of God’s infinite love continues
to shine. This fact should awaken feelings
of devoted gratitude,—be an Inoeutive to
renewed zeal and devotion and a stimulua to
work faithfully “through the morniug hours*
for the night is comiug when our work will
be over.
Regular, systematic, liberal giving wil'
encourage habits of self-deuial and promote
spiritual growth. The work is one which
should commend itself to every Christian
heart in otr community. “Freely ye have
received, freely give." "Give and it shall
be given unto you. “ These words of Chriat
will be sufficient to clearly show that giving
is a religions duty. Let u, my Sis era, en
large our beaitsand enlarge our gif;->, re
membering Jesus as truly sits over against
His treasury now as when upon earth, and
He not only beholds the amount we cast in,
but discerns the spirit iu which we give.
Methinks I hear a responsive echo ia the
heart of every member, when I directly,
believingly, lov -and boldlv say, that
those who g : ve ci -ei uJy and liberally to
ilie cause of Chris’, will thereby se urea
blessing upon that which remains. The
bread and oil of the unselfish widow of
Sarepta were not diminished by being divi
ded with God’s prophets; they continued
and multiplied. Then, let us not only be
diligent and frithful ourselves, out strive
with increased i iterest to induce others to
<*ngtge in this goof and noble w<rk.
On examination of the Treasuier’s book, I
find S7B 00 -iraou't contributed and piid out
for Church purposes during the year. It is
true, the amount is o nparatirely smrll, but
:t shows what euergv, svstem, willing minds
and devoted hearts can accomplish, eveu
tinder unfavorable circumstances It should
be a gratifying fact, that while the blight of a
financial dis k has left no calling or industry
untouched throughout 'he civilize I world,
and while nur treasury has ant been reolen
ished as abundantly as the demiuls mat
have required, yet when we take in-> con
Rideration that we have relied wholly Unou
voluntary con'ributions of the member-, we
have reason to ‘thank God and take cour
age “ Then let us never weary in ou" H ff -t s

Dtwson, G., Feb. 12, 1878.
In Memory f Miss Mary Cath
arine Roger*
We enter upon the discharge of a
suggested du'v and one that is due a depart-,
ed friend, with the most profound sorrow
and sadness. In niakmg the annoucement
of the demise of Miss Gar, a familiar friend
and neighbor, ineroorv reverts to the manv
pleasant hours spent with her whde in health,
in moments of decline and suffering, and
even at the time of her departure. We
formed her acquaintance but a few ebon
years since; then she sppircntly erjored
the health and vigor of vouth. Our rela
lions, for a time, were not so intimate, yet
the casual acquaintance dm le gradually
ripened into the relationship of friends, In
all our intercourse, we have seen developed
those noble traits of character which ever
tend to raise woman in the scale of social
life nnd real worth. Our friend has been
taken away in the very prime of life, when
her example, as a young Christian, was just
beginning to be observed, and her influence
for good fel' by her associates in every dav
life. Not only was she a 'ovely companion,
but we have found her especially inteiesting
and instructive as a firm believer in the
Christianity of the Bible. Miss Oat was
naturally very mode-t and dilfidont, yet,
ber uniform deportment and exemplary
Christian walk won for her a large circle of
friends, She waa best beloved bv those
with whom she was most intima-e. How sad
to think that one so lovely and just en'ering
upon the duties of life, should, at such an
early day, be taken away. Our hearts cry
out withunutterable anguish and grief, aud
we feel that death is cruel and the grave
inexorable, yet we will bow in humble sub -
mission to “Him that, doetb all things well."
It is haTd to realize the fact that the piaces
that, knew ber a few days ago, now know
hr no more. She has leit a void in the
hearts of father, sister, relatives add friends
that time c n scarcely fill p, or memory
obliterate. Farewell, dear friend I No mot
will we meet at the close of the day and
enjoy sweet converse together. Never
again, as of yore, will we stroll hand iu
hand beneath- the starlight of a summer
sky and whisper our hopes for comibg years
You will calmly and sweetly rest in the
tomb. The seasons will com -and go. Id
gpi ing. the beautiful flowers will exhale 'heir
iragrance, and the birds will waible their
gweetes' melodies, and in autumn the winds
will howl and chant a tender requiem over
your grave. All your sufferings, hopes and
anticipations have beeu merged fc-o the
deep joy and cairn repose of thaclife beyond
the grave, where partings are unknown.
“Bright be theptnceof tby 60ul,
No lovelier spirit than thine
K'er burst from Its mortal control.
In the orbs of the blessed to shir.o.
On earth thoe wert all but divine,
As thy soul shall Immortally Ik ; m
And our sorrow may cease to repine.
When we know that thy God Is with thee.'
